Frida Beyond ABBA (edited from page 14) (fridabeyondabba.com) "Frida's grandmother, Arntine (Anni) Cornelia Marie Edvardsdatter was born on July 26, 1898, in Prestenget, a rural Norwegian farming area north of Sund. She was the second child of Mensine Kobhaug, a farmer’s daughter from the Hemnes peninsula and a legdslem (a poor person cared for by the local community). Since Mensine hardly had the means to take care of herself and her first born daughter Arvida, Anni was given up for foster care shortly after the baptism and was to grow up with Bonsak and Jensine Hansen, a well-off, childless couple from Sund. Although the Hansen’s upbringing was strict and severe and life wasn’t always easy on Anni, she grew up to be a proud young woman of somewhat short stature with a solid foundation in life. However, with the outbreak of World War I in 1914, the tables were once again turned on her good fortune as she was registered as fattigforsørget (a person on welfare for the poor), a bitter fate that only bolstered the 17-year-old woman’s will to survive and made her determined to look after herself whenever possible. For if she didn’t take care of things, then who would?" As we now know, the misfortunes would not stop there and Anni's upbringing and life experience would ultimately prove both beneficial and a struggle for the granddaughter she would raise. Een lang gekoesterde wens was om ooit eens Ales Stenar te bezoeken. Dit is bijzonder monument in de vorm van een vikingschip. Vanavond was het zo ver ( jippieee). Normaal een gigantische drukke bezienswaardigheid a la Stonehenge met busladingen vol toeristen. Wonder boven wonder was er niemand en brak na een dag regen ook nog de zon door. Toeval? Sinds het archeologisch onderzoek in de jaren tachtig van de vorige eeuw is begonnen, zijn nog steeds niet alle vragen beantwoord rond de raadselachtige gesitueerde stenen, Ales Stenar in Kåseberga. Een deel van de onderzoekers denkt dat de 59 keien een grafmonument zijn. Anderen gaan ervan uit dat de stenen als astronomische klok hebben gefungeerd omdat ze zo zijn geplaatst dat de zon in de zomer in het noordwesten onder gaat en in de winter precies bij een tegenovergestelde steen onder gaat. Jeanna Bauck, born August 19, 1840, Stockholm. Painter. Daughter of the renowned music critic and part time composer Wilhelm Bauck. Studied the art of painting in Stockholm, Dresden, Düsseldorf and Munich. While in Germany Bauck struck up a close and lasting friendship with the Danish artist Bertha Wegmann. The couple lived and worked together for several years both in Germany and later in France. In the early 1880s Bauck got her first big career break when a selection of her paintings where chosen to be shown at the prestigious Paris Salon. In the early phase of her career Bauck mainly painted landscape motifs and this in a semi-realistic style. In the 1890s she broaden her output and started to do portrait paintings as well. Worked as an art teacher in Munich and Berlin from the mid 1880s. Among Baucks more famous pupil was the highly influential early-expressionist painter Paula Modersohn-Becker. Died, aged 86, in Munich, Germany on May 27, 1926. I just spent a few days in Sweden, kind of a nice long weekend. I was staying in Gothenburg but spent a day in Kungalv, which I loved. It's a cute little town but my reason for being there was to visit Bohus Fastning, which translates to Bohus Fortress. I hiked 11 miles to get to the castle, which was a great reward at the end of a 5 or 6 hour trek. It's only around $11 to enter & should be on every "must do" list for anyone visiting the area. It takes a solid 3 hours to thoroughly explore the grounds & it is striking. I knew I'd enjoy it but when I arrived and was able to look up at it & take it all in, with its 700 years of history, I was blown away. Yet, that is exactly what happened in our beloved New Castle on May 21, 1654." Image 2: Text reads "Today, New Castle is a quiet, quant historical town, but it was born out of the conflict between European powers for control of the Delaware River and adjacent lands. Although the Dutch established the first European colony in modern-day Delaware, in their wake came the Swedes and Finns. In 1638, they erected Fort Christina and a Swedish colony in modern-day Wilmington. Viewing the Swedes and Finns as intruders, the Dutch responded in kind and constructed Fort Casimir in New Castle. It is good to remember that throughout history most people did not live like nobles. The history of the rich and famous has been preserved due to its showiness, much more than that of the common people. Much has been destroyed, renovated beyond recognition or thrown away over time because their value has not been considered important 😭 The interior of this farmhouse is charmingly archaic due to the harsh conditions of northern Europe. Erik Sture, born May 18, 1546, Hörningsholm Castle, Södermanland. Count. Soldier. Member of the influential Sture-family. Erik’s grandfather was the previous regent of Sweden, Sten Sture the Younger. His father Svante Sture was the premier peer or the Swedish realm while his mother Märta Leijonhufvud, was a younger sister of the Swedish queen Margareta Leijonhufvud. As a young man Erik stayed at the court of his royal cousin Duke Johan of Finland. When Duke Johan was accused of high treason against the Crown, Sture initially maintained his loyalty towards the former. Captured by royalist forces after the fall of Åbo in August 1563. Switched his allegiance to King Erik XIV soon hereafter. Fought as a military commander under the king’s banner during the Northern Seven Years’ War. Wounded in battle against Danes outside the gates of Älvsborg in 1565. Arrested alongside his father Svante and older brother Nils on the orders of the increasingly deranged and paranoid Erik XIV in 1567. According to Erik, the Sture family conspired to regain supreme power in Sweden for themselves. On May 27, 1567 - alongside his father, brother and two other high ranking nobles - killed at the dungeons of Uppsala Castle by king Erik’s decree. The murders, in Swedish history known as “the Sture massacre”, was one of the sparks behind the rebellion that led to Erik XIV eventual downfall in 1568. Meet Otto Magnus Påhlman who turned an asset – his beautiful handwriting – into a career and a legacy. Explore the story of the visionary who created a writing method, and delve into the lives of his sons, Otto Ottosson and John Magnus Påhlman, who carried on his work by creating Broderna Påhlmans. This institution evolved into Påhlmans Handelsinstitut, a business college in Stockholm that continues to thrive today. Otto Magnus Påhlman was the grandson of Carl Gustaf Påhlman. After his discharge from the military in 1841, he began training Russian officers at the Imperial Cadet School in St. Petersburg, but was noticed for his beautiful handwriting, and began to teach the officers language and writing. Otto Magnus developed an innovative new writing method known as Påhlmanska Skrivmetoden, or the Påhlman writing method. It utilised two elements – a straight line and a semi-oval shape – to create alphabets and produce clear, even handwriting. Students were thus able to pick up writing more quickly. Uppsala university students at ‘Flustrets’ in 1896, Uppsala Sweden. Flustrets is a restaurant in Uppsala which today also serves as a nightclub. It was established in 1842 by Sven Norberg with the name "Strömparterrens schweizeri". It would end up getting the nickname ‘Flustrets’ by the university students however because people would gather on the porch there like bees on a fluster (the board outside a beehive in Swedish). At that time, the building was also designed as a pavilion and it was thought that it resembled a beehive which was given the nickname ‘kupan’ (the hive). Just got back from today's 63 mile bike tour and it was indeed a beautiful day for it. Sunny and warm, calm winds and almost no traffic on the narrow country roads. I saw so many abandoned farms and houses that I lost count and I finally went to see the Lancaster memorial in Höjalen forest where a british Lancaster bomber crashed with all of it's bomb cargo intact on the evening of the 29th of August 1944. The explosion was gigantic and even if this place is rather remote, windows in houses miles away were smashed by the enormous blast. Several acres of forest caught fire and burned for days. The aircraft which was considered a RAF veteran having made 126 successful missions had caught fire while it was still airborne. Some of the crew members tried to jump out of the plane using parachutes but sadly none of them survived. The memorial consists of the remnants of one of the Lancaster's propellers mounted on a pole which also has a plaque with the names of the airmen who lost their lives. Her great-grandfather, Carl Eklund, was an acclaimed cabinetmaker who established his workshop in 1917 near Chicago’s North Shore. These four stone walls once formed Bergkvara castle. Built by Trolle in the 15th century, owned by, among others, Sparre and then destroyed by Nils Dacke in the 16th century. Erik Adolf Printzensköld, born 1718. Soldier. Son of the Carolean warrior Carl Printzensköld. Followed in his father’s footsteps and joined the army as a volunteer in 1734. Initially served at the same regiment - the Smålandian cavalry - as is dad. Shipped over to Finland to fight the Russians in 1741. Performed so well here that he in 1743 was chosen to serve with the prestigious Royal Life Trabants. Promoted of rittmeister of said corp in the 1750s. Left his active military career in 1759. A great music buff. One of the co-founders The Royal Swedish Academy of Music in 1771. In 1758 married to the lady Maria Hedvig Gerner. The marriage was childless. Died at his country estate Venngarn in Uppland on May 15, 1796.
