In my latest YouTube video, I talk about something that is very real- seedling envy!! By now, most of us have already sown seeds and are eagerly awaiting for those seedlings to grow. We compare how our snapdragons are doing against others on social media. Well I’m here to tell you that faster growth is not better growth for seedlings. Faster growth = 🌱 Thinner cell walls and therefore makes the ultimate plant more vulnerable to pest pressure and disease 🌱Weaker stems- you want those stems to grow slow and sturdy. Not fast, tall and lanky where a moderate breeze will topple it! Studies show that stockier plants outperform taller plants! 🌱 Weaker roots, especially if you are fertilizing more than you should. We can only see what’s above the soil it it’s what’s under the soil that really makes a world of difference. I always want to grow strong roots! This here is a 2 month old snapdragon. It is not at all tall but it sure is sturdy, has offshoots (no need to pinch) and has thick waxy leaves. I have been “hardening” it off since early Feb, when there’s been full sun and temps in the 30s F. It may not be fast growing but it sure is strong and healthy! Slow and steady wins the race! My seedlings are not thriving! Help! . . Believe it or not, we've tried them all..well, maybe not really..but we've done a lot of trial and error and we're still learning a lot! . We've tried sowing on cocopeat, coco coir, foams, vermiculites, perlites, loam soil and even on styros! . When growing plants from seeds, many things can go wrong and it can be very tricky and sometimes frustrating! . Here are a four things to take note of: 1. Fertilization - seedlings need to be nourished with the right nutrients to be strong and thrive! 🌱 2. Transplant - move them at the right time and size where they can move and grow their roots and stem more freely. When true leaves start to come out, that is an indicator that seedlings are ready to move! 3. Proper hardening - After germination and initial sprouting, seedlings will benefit in gradual and increasing exposure to sun and wind. Find a place with part sun and part shade that will give your seedlings grit and resilience in no time! 😆 4. Over or Under watering - self explanatory!
