As I always say, too much of a good thing can be a bad thing. This is true when it comes to SIBO ❗️ Too much good or bad bacterial flora in the small intestine produces a number of gastrointestinal symptoms that interfere with your normal digestive process. SIBO symptoms can range from digestive imbalance to chronic illness and autoimmune conditions. Here are the main symptoms you might experience: Gas, Bloating, and Diarrhea: Once in the small intestine, the bacteria feed on undigested food and produce either methane or hydrogen, depending on which type of bacteria overgrows. Abdominal Pain: SIBO causes inflammation in your digestive tract, which can lead to painful symptoms such as abdominal pain and cramping. Constipation (much less common than diarrhea): SIBO can disrupt the natural gut flora, which affects your ability to eliminate waste and lead to constipation. Food Intolerances: Intolerances such as gluten, casein, lactose, fructose, and particularly histamine intolerance. Start giving a 💩 about your 💩👇🏼⁠ As a naturopath, I LOVE talking about poo! Why? It tells you so much about what’s going on inside that gut of yours. ⁠ One of the biggest things I ask my clients to do is look into the toilet bowl and start looking at their poop. ⁠ ⁠ Yes, I know it may sound weird for some but your poop is an insight into your current gut health! ⁠ ⁠ So what does your poop mean? ⁠ 👉🏼Small little drops and not one big easy poop - indicates constipation meaning you need some digestive support.⁠ 👉🏼 Undigested foods - your digestive system isn’t breaking down and absorbing foods efficiently which may be due to many different reasons including lack of digestive enzymes, conditions such as IBS, SIBO etc. ⁠ 👉🏼 Sticking to the side of the bowl - again indicates liver insufficiency usually due to a diet high in excess fats. ⁠ 👉🏼 Floating stools - usually indicate malabsorption issues. ⁠ 👉🏼Pale in colour/slight yellowing in colour? SIBO (Small Intestinal Bacterial Overgrowth) Common Symptoms: 🚫 - Bloating (particularly lower GI bloating) - Diarrhea (Hydrogen SIBO) - Constipation (Methane SIBO) - Unexplained weight gain or weight loss - Nutrient deficiencies - Flatulence - Nausea HOW DOES THIS HAPPEN?❗️ We all have billions of bacteria in our digestive tract, SIBO happens when there's an excessive amount of a certain gut bacteria in the small intestine, or when bacteria that's normally found in the large intestine is found in the small one. How do the bacteria wind up where they don't belong? It happens when there's a problem with "gut motility"—muscle contractions that occur in the gastrointestinal tract when you’re digesting food If these movements in the small intestine don't happen, then bacteria get stuck there and start to reproduce. This is why in people with SIBO, the nutrients in food aren't absorbed properly and can cause some symptoms that cause a whole bunch of issues. TREATMENT ✅️ In terms of treatment, it can range from improving motility through diet to taking a course of antibiotics to kill the invasive species of bacteria. This can be a long a stressful recovery, but there are plenty of ways (including wholistic) approaches to fixing SIBO. The problem with antibiotics is that it can re occur soon after. The best way is to come up with a plan. Once doing a bit of testing to identify which bacteria is causing the issues, a plan can be put into place specific to the individuals case. Why your SIBO isn’t going away?! 🧐🧐 Small Intestinal Bacterial Overgrowth or SIBO is a gut condition where there is an imbalance of bacteria in your gut causing too much to overpopulate your small intestine. Let’s think of your gut lining as a drawbridge. 🌁 Your gut is naturally semi-permeable. This lets teeny-tiny boats (micronutrients) pass through your intestinal wall and into your bloodstream. It’s the way your body absorbs the foods you eat. External factors, such as food, infections, stress, and toxins, can break apart the tight junctions in your intestinal wall. This leaves the drawbridge open.  If left unchecked, you develop a leaky gut. 🚩 When your gut is leaky, toxins, microbes, and undigested food particles can escape into your bloodstream. Your immune system marks these “foreign invaders” as pathogens and attacks them. Client Success Story 🥳 “I feel better than I have ever felt in my life after just 4 months of treatment.” *For privacy, John is a made-up name but this is his real story shared with permission. Unfortunately this approach may provide some relief but usually when you add the foods back in, the symptoms return. And for some people, taking probiotics could actually make things worse! Because if we have a digestive system already overloaded with bacteria, we don’t want to be adding anymore in, even if it is ‘good bacteria’ such as probiotics. The KEY to healing your gut is 1st to remove any overgrowth that isn’t supposed to be there. Then we can look look at slowly introducing certain strains of probiotics to repopulate the gut once the overgrowth of bacteria or yeast has been removed. This 4 step approach is what works really well: 1. Remove - the overgrowth/ parasite/ bacteria etc 2. Replace - foods in your diet that are allowing the growth of these bacteria & yeast 3. Repair - using specific supplements & single strain probiotics 4. Rebalance - continued healing with full stain probiotics & gut healing foods/ supplements Kinda like a ‘weed then feed’ approach. So, if you suspect you have gut issues (even bloating or gas can be a sign you have an imbalance!) you can either run some at home lab tests to find out exactly what is going on. OR You could go straight into a gut healing protocol which helps get rid of any gut overgrowth, rebalances the gut, then works on healing & sealing up the gut wall. Because the truth is you won’t properly get well until you work on your gut, so it’s usually the 1st place to look! And no matter how well you eat, if you aren’t breaking down your food properly & absorbing all the nutrients, your body will not have what it needs to thrive. Plus, you may not be making all the B-vitamins you need to produce serotonin - your feel happy neurotransmitter (hello gut brain connection!) The gut really is the foundation of good health. Learning how to fix leaky gut permanently takes time. Remember, everyone responds to protocols differently, and there are several factors that can complicate your leaky gut treatment. In fact, you may simply be overlooking a few key steps. Here are a few of the most common mistakes I see when fixing leaky gut. ⬇️ 1. Eating too many raw vegetables It’s true that vegetables are good for your gut. However, when you’re on a gut healing journey, too many raw vegetables could slow your progress. This is because digesting raw vegetables takes a lot of work. If you’re short on digestive enzymes, raw veggies can contribute to bloating gas, and other kinds of GI discomfort. Instead, focus on cooked vegetables while trying to fix leaky gut. 2. Not trying an elimination diet Anyone wondering how to fix a leaky gut should try an elimination diet. This approach rules out hidden food intolerances, or serious food allergies. If you experience bloating, constipation, brain fog, or joint pain that seem to mysteriously come and go, chances are that you have a food sensitivity or allergy and could benefit from going on an elimination diet.  3. Cheating on your gut-healing protocol Let’s face it…nobody’s perfect! With that said, if you want to fix leaky gut for good, this is one step you cannot skip. Each time you figure “a little pizza can’t hurt” or “I’ll just have one glass of wine,” your digestive system takes a hit. Most of our gut bacteria are meant to be in our large intestine and colon. Here they help break down food, synthesize vitamins, and eliminate waste. However, medications or a poor diet can cause the bacteria normally found in the large intestine and colon to overgrow and colonize in your small intestine — leading to SIBO. SIBO, also known as Small Intestinal Bacterial Overgrowth, is basically what the name describes. The bacteria in your small intestine get unbalanced and overgrow, instead of living in a balanced state. SIBO symptoms can range from digestive imbalance to chronic illness and autoimmune conditions. Here are the main symptoms you might experience: ⚠️Gas, bloating, diarrhea ⚠️Abdominal pain ⚠️Constipation ⚠️Food intolerances ⚠️Fat malabsorption ⚠️Vitamin and mineral deficiencies and more If you’re like most, you’ve tried everything to relieve your symptoms of SIBO. Gut issues may seem complex, but they usually stem from one of these 4 main things: > Parasites > H.Pylori > Candida/ Yeast overgrowth > Bacterial Overgrowth/ SIBO Once you know what’s causing the inflammation in your gut (ie. do you have any of these going on??) you can then work on removing the overgrowth or infection, heal and seal up the gut wall and repopulate your good gut microbiome which is kinda like ‘your army’. I use Mediterranean dieting with a lot of my clients, so i wanted to showcase what building a plate looks like for this! 💁🏼‍♀️TIP: To help with creating a diet change if your life, think of what you can add vs what you should eliminate. This could help prevent a restrictive mindset around food and create sustainability long term (which is key!) 💡Reminder: The Mediterranean diet is not low carb! It’s roughly composed of 25% protein, 50% carbs, 30% fats. This composition is more balanced compared to other dietary styles out there, which allows for adequate fiber intake, varitey of fats, fruits, grains, etc. 😋You can still eat mediterranean based foods and not follow this macronutrient split. This can absolutely still provide you with fantastic health bnefits for blood sugar, reducing inflammation, improving metabolic health, and more. This is a principle I have adapted over the past few years to improve my health.

With March comes new energy especially with March being my birth month😊🎉 I’ve been quiet for a while because I needed a pause to heal. My long health journey led me to become a nutrition and gut health coach, but that doesn’t mean the journey stopped there. There are always new things to learn and the best thing is to learn from your own experience 😅 (although I don’t wish that journey for anyone). A new health diagnosis and symptoms arose: left and right hip labrum tear, low ferritin level, thyroid hormone fluctuation, fatigue, poor sleep…and my gut acting up even though I was nourishing my gut with all the healthy stuff - prebiotics, probiotics, cruciferous veggies, protein, resistant starch, and avoided gluten, sugar, and other inflammatory ingredients …. Because I know most of the diseases start in the gut I’ve added 1 and 1 together and got tested for SIBO (small intestinal bacterial overgrowth) and other gut health markers. I wasn’t surprised when the SIBO breath test came back positive, but I was shocked by other markers showing dysbiosis, liver overload, and a sneaky 🦠! I’ve been on a protocol to heal all my issues that are slowly improving, but they are far from perfect. At first, I was saddened and ashamed of myself for promoting a healthy lifestyle and teaching others how to improve their gut health while struggling with my health, but now I take it as an advantage that is moving me forward and helping me to deepen my knowledge further as I can help even more people on the way.
