🌳 Living Carbon uses a photosynthesis enhancement trait to help trees grow faster and accumulate ~53% more biomass. This enhanced carbon sequestration and a reduced decay rate result in longer-term carbon storage and the production of more durable wood products. 85+ climate enthusiasts joined us at Pier 28 on Friday for the SF Climate Week Ocean Health & Coastal Adaptation Speaker Panel and Ideation Workshop, hosted by Amareux Rodriguez and Kelsey Krach. Sofar Head of Ocean Science Pieter Smit kicked off the engaging session with opening remarks, and Eric Stackpole and Zack Johnson led engaging tours of our bayside office. Has an amazing week in San Francisco visiting for @sfclimateweek. SF is the perfect host city as it’s a sustainable city living laboratory and easy to showcase the week-long decentralized summit organized in a way that really speaks to me — it’s not a stuffy conference in some hotel, it’s a distributed gathering of people focused on innovation and accelerating climate solutions. There are over 300+ showcase events and workshops hosted at company headquarters, event spaces, the SFO airport people mover, on bike trails, and in bars, curated by 750+ organizations with 15,000 participants. I lived in SF from 2014 to 2020 and I really miss the start up spirit and creative idea culture. Loved connecting, exchanging ideas, and thinking about ways climate solution business models can be leveraged to create a better future. One of my favourite events this week at #SFClimateWeek was a collab between @earthsessions.project and @calacademy 💞 I had the joy of interviewing @olivialomasi @asianoutsider and @queersurf! We bonded over our personal stories that lead to our work today and shared some of the keys things our community members could be doing to have an impact right now. SF Climate Week I attended so many inspiring events this week as part of SF Climate Week (and notes on things you can do this weekend!) - Biodiversity in Our Urban Spaces - Great panel at Manny’s on how engaging with an nurturing biodiversity in our cities makes us feel more connected and can mobilize action. The #citynaturechallenge goes through this weekend with events throughout the Bay. - Native gatherers and climate change convening - Learning from the observations and knowledge of California Native culture bearers and basket artists. I got to attend an amazing event yesterday - and you can Saturday at the California Native Homeland Festival @exploratorium - Exploratorium After Dark - Molecular biologists working to mitigate climate change - a great evening at the Exploratorium with students exploring seaweed as a way to reduce methane emissions (among many other activities!). The best way to fight climate despair? Seeing young scientists, activists, and culture bearers using their passions, talents, and knowledge to chip away at this very wicked problem. #sfclimateweek #museums #stemed #citynaturechallenge #twoeyedseeing
It takes a lot for me to leave my house on a Friday night (😅) but it was SF Climate Week this week and I was super happy to make it to the closing night event with my good friend sarah from @deco.denim. Because sustainable fashion! There was a panel and some local designers showed their clothes. And there was some really good stuff. I’m pretty opinionated, especially when it comes to menswear and of course denim, and basically every look that Jaron Fonseca showed from his brand Jayavelli made me lean over to sarah and loud whisper “so good!!”. And then Michael Jet from Rotton Cotton showed really amazing things with upholstery fabrics and his stuff was just awesome also. And I finally got to wear my @raleighdenimworkshop shirt I frankensteined. In fact every item of clothing I wore was found, gifted or thrifted ☺️. Oh except my Bryr Clogs… but handmade in SF is about as local and sustainable as you can get. #sfclimateweek #sustainablefashion #upcycledfashion #upcycledjeans
Yesterday, I had the privilege of speaking at the Africa: Climate, Capital, and AI event during #SFClimateWeek at Port Lab, hosted by @diligence_africa. I emphasized the importance of Oakland tapping into the African diaspora for resources, collaboration, and talent exchange to enrich the city. Imagine the potential of hosting this event in collaboration with the city and chamber of commerce next year. It could attract influential African dignitaries, showcasing Oakland as a viable space for investment and partnership. The Conservancy had a fantastic time participating in the 4th Annual California Resilience Challenge Showcase and Reception, hosted by the Bay Area Council Foundation aboard the Historic Klamath in San Francisco. Climate Resolve (@climateresolve) Climate Planning and Resilience Coordinator Lia Cohen and BH UWC Project Manager Daniel G. Hernandez served as featured speakers on a panel celebrating the 2023 California Resilience Challenge recipients. Together, they discussed our winning project, "Accelerating Greenways for Community Resilience in the Urban Watersheds of Los Angeles." In partnership with Resilient Cities Catalyst (@citiescatalyst) and Arup (@arupgroup), our team will complete this project within the Conservancy's expanded jurisdictional territory through the identification and preparation of community-based greenway conceptual designs, the development of geospatial and project planning tools, and continued multi-stakeholder coordination. We are thrilled to announce the launch of GROW, a public art installation in San Francisco! 📸 🌞🎉✨🎨👫💚🌎🌍🌱🌴🍃🌲🌳 📍In honor of #EarthMonth and the 35th anniversary of the Goldman Environmental Prize, the @goldmanprize is pleased to present this project, celebrating planet Earth and its growing community of environmental defenders. The art installation was designed by Bay Area artists @laurahapka and @someguy.is and in partnership with @wearedemonstrate and our team at Local Language! The trees used in GROW are provided by @friendsoftheurbanforest and, once the installation is dismantled, will be planted in communities around San Francisco. Recycling WAS a lie. And exciting technology is changing that ♻. Many lost hope about recycling after learning that the concept was created and weaponized by Fossil Fuel industries, and that most of our facilities are not even equipped to deal with the plastics they get. But, there are some exciting new recycling technologies that are changing that, so that we keep carbon in infinite circulation and out of the ocean and landfills. For 🌍 #SFClimateWeek I attended the premiere of documentary Reinventing Recycling, here are some takeaways:1️⃣ We must prioritize REDUCING and REUSING, not just recycling. Full stop. 2️⃣ Mono-materials can be more easily recycled than layered materials, and we should build accordingly. AND The Bio-Optimized Technologies to keep Thermoplastics out of Landfills and the Environment (BOTTLE) government lab, and many others, are making progress in breaking down blended materials—hope for the future of ending waste. 3️⃣ BRIGHTMARK can break down plastics back into their component oils. While the end goal shouldn’t be to make more fuels, the exciting thing is that they are making waste plastic into a valuable good, which will incentivize to keep it out of the oceans and landfills. 4️⃣ Extended Producer Responsibility (EPR) laws and recycled content requirements can help drive demand for recycled materials, but the best thing we can do is to invest in our local Materials Recycling Facilities (MRFs) and consumer education. And keep recycling! The technology is coming. 5️⃣ PHAs (Polyhydroxyalkanoates)- the most biodegradable plastics on the market, derived from microorganisms found in own micro biome in our own bodies. They break down rapidly in many environments. We need more research and safety testing on them, but they’re promising. …Continued in comments…
