Finished and delivered! 2076 pieces representing global temperature change of 173 years from 1850-2023 — made in 3 weeks! BACKGROUND This quilt illustrates the global change in temperature for every year and month between 1850 (left) to 2023 (right). Each vertical line is a year reflecting temperature data for the 12 months of that year, January (top) to December (bottom). Blue represents cooler years/months and red, warmer years/months. Darker colors indicate more extreme temperatures in both directions. The color of each strip represents the temperature change of that year/month relative to the 1961-1990 mean (i.e. the average of the data during 1961-1990 is zero). Each block (2076 months) measures ½” x 3”. The overall effect reflects a striking trend toward hotter temperatures in recent decades as a result of human-caused climate change. I’m enjoying the new palette to match the client corporate colors - the red is more scarlet, the blue leans navy and the median point a subtle merengue yellow. Two new colors represent the hotter 2023 - dark burgundy and one month of data that I simply used black (last step/year on the far right). 🔥 I bought Extra Wide Kona back in Aqua for the back that arrived today - onto quilting it now. Of note: - NOAA ranks 2023 as the warmest year in its global temperature record, which dates back to 1850. - There is a one-in-three chance that 2024 will be warmer than 2023 and a 99% chance that 2024 will rank among the five warmest years on record. In 2023, global surface temperature was 2.12°F (1.18°C) above the 20th-century average. This weekend I’m with 70+ other quilters at the @sfquiltersguild Quilt Away at Camp Newman in Santa Rosa! I love getting to spend time with my Guild friends and having a wonderful time meeting new members! My focus for the weekend: making progress on a commission for a new climate change #warming stripes quilt. I’ll post more here as I go but have a tight deadline to start and complete this baby within 3 weeks to make a May 13 deadline. So far I’ve selected a slightly tweaked color palate, washed, spray stiffened, ironed, cut, and sorted over 3000 pieces representing monthly temperature change from 1850-2023. Today I’m now ready to starti sewing 12 monthly strips per year - 173 of these (1 per year) to go. It was a pleasure meeting Janna Keegan, the Juror of the 2024 Sanchez Left Coast Annual Exhibition last night. Janna is the associate curator for contemporary art and programming at the Fine Arts Museums of San Francisco. Exhibitions she has curated include Judy Dater: Only Human (2018), Steve Kahn: Hollywood Suites (2018), and David Hockney: Four Seasons (2019), and Hung Liu: Golden Gate (金門) (2021). Additionally Keegan recently assisted in organizing the exhibition Uncanny Valley: Being Human in the Age of AI (2020) and Judy Chicago: A Retrospective (2021).
