Amy’s examiners were Prof. Stefan Wastegård (Stockholm University) and Prof. Gill Plunkett (Belfast University) with Prof. John Lowe as the independent chair. Amy’s thesis, entitled “Analysing human-climate interactions in the Holocene using a high-resolution pollen and tephra record from Diss Mere, England” provides an overview of environmental changes during key periods in the #Holocene and evaluates the interplay of human activity and climate change. Most people probably associate bivalves (clams, mussels, oysters...) with the ocean, but there are a whole host of freshwater species too. The UNE Natural History Museum has quite a few specimens in their wet collection (I was expecting drawers of shells!). Why would a palaeontologist bother with shells like this? They aren't fossils! They still have their soft tissues! They smell funny! Well, fossils (invertebrates especially) are often used as palaeoenvironmental proxies - they can let you know whether an ancient environment was hot or cold, wet or dry, was hit by storms, had big waves or quiet waters, was super salty or nice and fresh. The reason that is possible is because the modern relatives of these fossils show us how well they tolerate all these conditions! These modern freshwater bivalves will form part of a study - eventually incorporating fossils - that aims to work out what kinds of environments were around in eastern Australia about 100 million years ago, when dinosaurs were roaming around. Ecological niche models (ENMs) provide probability maps of suitable areas for the species, either under current, past, or future climatic conditions. Thus, they may assist in designing conservation actions and addressing conservation priorities. In our new study, published in Biological Conservation journal, we combined modern and fossil occurrence data (for 38 medium-sized terrestrial mammal species of conservation concern) to investigate how the inclusion of the fossil record in the data affects ENMs predictions under future climate scenarios. We found that: (a) when calibrated with integrated data, ENMs provide different magnitudes and yet similar trends of change in future species spatial distribution; (b) the inclusion of fossil data always expands species’ climatic niches; (c) the predicted climate change effect resulting from this niche expansion is not uniform across species. #ecologicalnichemodels #climatechange #biodiversity #conservationbiology #palaeoecology
🚨New paper!🚨 How can we reconstruct past climates from patchy and spatially biased records?🌍🌡️❓ Kilian Eichenseer and I address this question in our new paper, published today in Climate of the Past: https://doi.org/10.5194/cp-20-349-2024. Geochemical and ecological proxies allow for robust local-scale palaeoclimate reconstructions. However, when using these data to reconstruct regional or global palaeoclimate, ignoring the spatial distribution and patchiness of proxy records can introduce bias. 📉❌ We have developed a Bayesian model capable of estimating latitudinal temperature gradients by integrating various proxies and priors based on physical constraints. It bridges gaps in the latitudinal coverage of proxy data and provides realistic uncertainty estimates. 📊✅ Applying this model to geochemical and ecological sea surface temperature proxies from the early Eocene climatic optimum (EECO) suggests a flatter latitudinal temperature gradient than most earlier studies. 🌊🌡️ Our new method integrates disparate proxy data and prior knowledge to produce quantitative palaeotemperature estimates. Bridging spatial gaps, this approach can increase the accuracy of proxy-based palaeoclimate reconstructions, especially in intervals with limited sampling. 📈🌎 #paleoclimate #palaeoclimate #eocene #bayesian #palaeoecology

One of the purposes of this initiative is to promote this field in Hong Kong. Over the next 12 months or so we will be hosting a series of public talks, seminars, and workshops. Two @BrockUniversity professors are among a body of international experts that has selected a location on Earth that will allow the #Anthropocene to be defined as a new epoch in geologic time. @BrockUERSC Professors of Earth Sciences Francine McCarthy and Martin Head, and @Carleton_U Professor of Earth Sciences Tim Patterson, head up a team that has been studying the geology of Crawford Lake in Milton, Ont., for many years. On July 11, the Anthropocene Working Group — of which McCarthy and Head are voting members — announced its choice of Crawford Lake over 11 other possible sites as the location that best shows the boundary of the proposed Anthropocene, brought about by major changes to Earth through human activity. These are some belemnite rostrums I dug up during the Flora course excursion weekend! Belemnites were a taxon of squid (now extinct) that were related to our present cuttlefish (Sepiida, zeetkatten). The rostrum was part of the internal shell. Because these are so common in certain geological layers, belemnites are often used in stable isotope research to figure out the age of a layer or object. Belemnites from the Peedee formation in North-America are used as the standard for 13C carbon, which is abbreviated with PDB (Peedee Belemnite). The calculations with 13C can also be used for climate reconstructions! More photos of the Scunthorpe Pliosaur in the build up to the initial dig. These were found in late October 2017. I found the bones on an organised field trip with the Stamford and District Geological Society. At the bottom of a clay face a meter and a half high. Within the face is a yellowish, pyritic bed which looks similar to some of the clay adhering to the premaxilla. Other bones, including two vertebral centrums and the atlas-axis were found either in material eroded from the face or in situ. The prospect at the time looked good for more bones, possibly of a scattered skeleton of the animal. This week in Nature: Raging bulls - The cover shows an artist’s impression of two male mammoths fighting. During episodes of musth, adult male elephants undergo periods of elevated testosterone levels associated with aggression and competition for mating. In this week’s issue, Michael Cherney and his colleagues show that male woolly mammoths (Mammuthus primigenius) experienced similar episodes of musth. The researchers focused on tusks, which provide a record of growth in their layers of dentin. Using liquid chromatography with tandem mass spectrometry, the team was able to reconstruct hormone records using dentin extracted from modern elephant and prehistoric mammoth tusks. The results revealed similar testosterone fluctuations in the male mammoth as those associated with musth in the record for the male African elephant. 🌳The beauty of diversity - Homo progressively evolved (and learned) to select for the most diverse environments Our new study published today in Science reports on patterns of biome occupation thougout the evolution of our own genus. We found that Homo species signficantly increased the diversity of biomes they were capable to inhabit as they evolved and landed out of Africa. Even more strinkingly, what is true for the species (and the genus) was true of individual populations: archaeological sites occur non-randomly in areas of great plant and vertebrate species diversity. Artwork on exhibit! 🔥 I was invited to contribute to an exhibition at @jamescookuniversity called Falling from the Sky (on environmental impacts of climate change), so I took it as a way to challenge my crochet skills. The exhibition launched today This is 'Between Fire and Sky' - here is the accompanying artist's statement: Fire is a key element in many Australian environments, but changing climate and management are driving an increase in destructive fire. This abstract landscape shows frequent and intense fire leading to environmental loss. The layout invokes palaeoecology and diagrams of pollen summary groups, with each column representing a slice of time and the composition of the landscape, changing as time passes. Repeated red, intense flames are tied to little or no plant life and high levels of white, lifeless ash, while cooler flames from managed and cultural burning are linked to more plant life and grey nutrient-rich ash. The landscape is crocheted, making each element (sky, biomass, fire, ash) and each time slice interconnected – one continuous strand forms the full landscape. Gaps and voids show degradation and loss, threatening to destabilise and unravel the whole image. A beautifully preserved Thalattosuchian vertebra centrum found a few years back. Thalattosuchians are an extinct clade of marine crocodylomorph, consisting of the semi-aquatics teleosauroids and fully marine metriorhychids. This vertebrae is quite round in section, typical of teleosauroids (formerly Steneosaurus).
