In anticipation of October 7th, let me take you back in time a few times more to some vinyl releases I was involved in earlier. Day 10: There must be an exception to every rule... This music is not mine, but I was intensely involved though in the creation of this wondrous record: SONOKO ‘Les Anges, Les Bonheurs’ 12” EP on Stroom (STREP-009, January 2018). Many years ago (when myspace was still around), Sonoko and I had started a correspondence, and she sent me several CD’s with unreleased material. In 2017, I played the music to Ziggy Devriendt from STROOM…. and the rest is history. I was some kind of 'middleman' and confident in the whole process and also wrote my story on the back of the cover. The creation of this record surely was a passionate process. I guess some of you know this album? It has been repressed for the 4th time recently. Wir haben den gefeierten Künstler porträtiert: „Ziggy Devriendt sitzt in seiner neuen Wohnung in Athen, nimmt einen Schluck Wasser und dreht sich eine Zigarette. Ungefähr 70 Prozent seiner Zeit würde er mittlerweile in der griechischen Hauptstadt verbringen, erzählt er, den Rest in seiner Heimat Belgien. Wie es dazu gekommen ist, dass er nach über drei Jahrzehnten in ein anderes Land übergesiedelt ist? Na, es hätte ihm dort eben immer gefallen und nach zwei Jahren im Lockdown-Loop zu Hause sei es eine willkommene Abwechslung gewesen, dort zu sein. Und weil es sich richtig anfühlte, sei er einfach in Athen geblieben. Das allein beschreibt schon perfekt die Philosophie eines DJ und Labelbetreibers, der stets nach dem Gefühl geht und dabei maximal minimale Kompromisse eingeht. Devriendts Geschichte beginnt in Ostende, einem verschlafenen Nest an der Küste Belgiens. Dunkel sei es dort gewesen, erinnert er sich, und die kulturelle Hochzeit des Städtchens hätte weit zurückgelegen. "Es passierte gar nichts, es war ausgestorben und es gab nur wenig interessante Menschen", erzählt er. "Ich bin Skateboard gefahren und hatte natürlich einen Freundeskreis, letztlich aber war ich introvertierter, als ich es eigentlich bin. Ich hatte zwar einen Drang in mir, Neues zu entdecken, aber es fehlte an Stimuli." Das öffentlich-rechtliche Radio bietet immerhin die Impulse, an denen es in seiner Umgebung mangelt: In einer Sendung am späten Abend wird er mit Hip-Hop konfrontiert, seine Neugier ist geweckt.
