Today, 230 years ago, a British fleet under Admiral Richard Howe beat the French at the Battle of the Glorious First of June in what was the first major naval battle of the French Revolutionary Wars. Although the British sunk several French ships while losing none of their own, they failed to achieve their main objective of stopping a French naval convoy with the mission to provide France with much needed food supplies. We covered the Glorious First of June in Episode 10/Q2-1794, so jump right in! #onthisday #onthisdayinhistory #history #frenchhistory #britishhistory #navalhistory #militaryhistory #podcast #historypodcast #napoleon #bonaparte #napoleonicwars #frenchrevolution #gloriousfirstofjune

I'm posing here with one of the original 16 inch gun barrels from the Battleship New Jersey, which was built in this very shipyard. Over 80 years later, the Battleship New Jersey is back here for repairs. During the second World War, the United States would produce some of its best naval vessels to ever see battle. These ships would be built with the intention of being not only the best of their type, but to be the best design in the world at the time. This would include one of the world's most known classes of destroyers, the Fletcher-class. Named after Frank Friday Fletcher, the first ship of this class would be completed for service in June of 1942. Of the 175 ships built for the class, less then five of these ships are still in existence today due to either being scrapped or sunk in service. Featured today is USS The Sullivans which is located in Buffalo, New York as a museum. • • • • • What other types of American ships would you like to see? "The Jungle Skirmish, 1657" The troops of the Dutch East India Company are trying to claim a Portuguese outpost on Ceylon. The directors of the Company have given them permission to use lethal force in order to obtain the monopoly on the spice trade in the Indian Ocean. The Dutch East India Company traded mostly in spices from the South Asian Islands. They shipped them to Japan, China, India, the Arabian peninsula and their own country to distribute them into Europe. This post is based upon the Sinhalese–Portuguese conflicts, which were a series of armed engagements that took place from 1518 to 1658 in Sri Lanka (then known to Europeans as Ceylon) between the native kingdoms and the Portuguese Empire. A combination of political and military moves gained the Portuguese control over most of the island, but their invasion of the final independent kingdom was a disaster, leading to a stalemate in the wider war and a truce from 1621. In 1638 the war restarted when the Dutch East India Company intervened in the conflict, initially as an ally of the Sinhalese Kingdom against the Portuguese, but later as an enemy of both sides. The war concluded in 1658, with the Dutch in control of about half the island and the Portuguese expelled. #lego #history #legominifig #minifigures #legominifigures #legopirates #classiclego #legocollectibleminifigures #legoclassicpirates #legoship #legohistory #eastindiacompany #voc # #navalhistory

#Onthisday in 1916 the Battle of Jutland was fought. While it has all but disappeared from our pop-cultural memory of the First World War, this was, in terms of tonnage, the biggest naval battle that has EVER been fought (and likely that ever will be). Jutland has been a pet obsession of mine for a few years now - the terrifying scale of the destructive forces at play, the controversies that endure to this day, and what it represents in the long story of naval warfare all captivate me - so I thought, on the anniversary, I'd share this small collection of vintage postcards that I have assembled showing just a small part of Britain's Grand Fleet. Each of these ships carries her own fascinating story of Jutland and beyond, as well as those of the hundreds of individuals (or dozens in the case of the destroyers) who served aboard her. 1. HMS Iron Duke, Fleet Flagship, Admiral John Jellicoe aboard. 2. HMS Defence, 1st Cruiser Squadron Flagship, sunk, 893 of 903 crew killed. 3. HMS Warrior, 1st Cruiser Squadron, damaged beyond repair, abandoned and sunk 1 June. 4. HMS Invincible, 3rd Battlecruiser Squadron Flagship, served at the Battle of the Falkland Islands in 1914, sunk, 1026 of 1032 crew killed. 5. HMS Acasta & HMS Shark, destroyers attached to 3rd Battlecruiser Squadron. Shark led unsuccessful torpedo attack on German Second Scouting Group, continued to fire despite being disabled and horrifically outgunned and sank German Destroyer V48, 86 of 92 crew killed, Commander Loftus Jones awarded posthumous VC. Acasata offered to assist Shark, but was turned away by Jones due to danger. 6. HMS Lion, Battlecruiser Fleet Flagship, Admiral David Beatty on board. 7. HMS Queen Mary, 1st Battlecruiser Squadron, 1266 of 1286 crew killed. 8. HMS Indefatigable, 2nd Battlecruiser Squadron, 1016 of 1019 crew killed. 9. HMS Warspite, 5th Battle Squadron, would go on to earn more battle honours than any other individual Royal Navy ship and bombarded German defences on D Day (I love her). 10. HMS Malaya, 5th Battle Squadron, would go on to shell Genoa cathedral in 1941. #jutland #ww1 #navalhistory

During the second World War, the United States Navy would deliver one of their most known classes of light cruisers known as the Cleveland-class. These cruisers were similar in many ways to the preceeding Brooklyn-class of cruisers including the main design of their hull. The main differences between these two classes included their size which was about 2,000 tons heavier, and an increase to the amount of weaponry on board. The main armament of Cleveland-class cruisers were 4 × triple 6"/47 caliber Mark 16 guns and they could travel at a top speed of 32.5 knots at open sea. Featured today is one such Cleveland-class cruiser known as USS Manchester which would be completed in October of 1946. • • • • • What other types of American ships would you like to see? On the evening of 22 December 1810, HMS Minotaur, a British 74 gun ship-of-the-line and veteran of the battles of the Nile and Trafalgar, was hit by storms off the Dutch coast. The Minotaur struck a sandbank, but amid darkness and crashing waves, efforts to lighten the ship and refloat her proved futile. When daylight came, the crew began a perilous attempt to reach the shore. Two of the ship’s boats, carrying more than 100 men, reached the Dutch coast successfully, only to be taken prisoner by the authorities. A third boat, carrying another 100 men and the ship’s captain, was swamped by the waves, drowning all aboard. The Dutch refused to send out more than one pilot vessel into such stormy waters, to assist the rescue, later leading to bitter recriminations. That afternoon, Minotaur rolled over, drowning all the remaining crew except four men who clung to pieces of wreckage. The death toll came to 370. This painting by J.M.W Turner was intended as a generic depiction of a wreck, but upon its completion in 1810, the Minotaur’s fate was the news of the day, and an enduring link was made between the ship and the artwork. Our new series on Nelson’s Battles is in production now. You can watch Part 1 - the Battle of Cape St.Vincent - on Patreon and Nebula now. Link in bio. #EpicHistory #EpicHistoryTV #History #HMS #NavalHistory #Minotaur #BritishHistory

Did you know that one of the first practical and applied uses of a propeller was on the Turtle, the world's first combat submarine designed in New Haven, Connecticut in 1775 by inventor David Bushnell?⁣⁣⁣⁣⁣ ⁣⁣⁣⁣⁣ To propel the Turtle forward and backward, Bushnell used a front screw propeller that was operated by a foot powered treadle and a hand crank. A vertical propeller on the top of the boat assisted with ascent. These two propellers that Bushnell invented and described as “oars” and “like the blades of a windmill” were his greatest contribution to future marine development and to his submarine.⁣⁣⁣⁣⁣ ⁣⁣⁣⁣⁣ ⁣⁣⁣⁣⁣ ⁣⁣⁣⁣⁣ ⁣⁣⁣⁣ ⁣⁣⁣⁣ ⁣⁣⁣⁣ ⁣⁣⁣⁣⁣ ⁣⁣⁣⁣⁣ ⁣⁣⁣⁣⁣ #turtlesubmarine #maritime #boatprop #boathistory #screwpropeller #usnavy #submarines #warship #navalhistory #combatvessel #marineengineering #shipbuilding #usmilitary #maritimehistory #hydra_marine

The U.S. Navy's warships are known for being guardian angels on the high seas. A great example of this happened on May 30, 2008, when the USS Dubuque, led by Captain Bruce H. Lindsey (class of 1982), rescued six Filipino sailors near the Persian Gulf. This is the Navy at its best! ⚓️ #USNavy #RescueMission #NavalHistory

The Gerald R. Ford-class of aircraft carriers are known as the United States most powerful and innovative ships in the Navy. This 100,000 ton behemoth would be the first of the class to be completed and be loaded with over 75 aircraft. Despite their size, Ford-class carriers are designed to move at top speeds above 30 knots. In 2025, the United States plans to complete USS John F. Kennedy at the Newport News Shipyard which will be the second ship of this class. • • • • • What other types of American ships would you like to see? The USS New Mexico (BB-40) was the lead ship of the New Mexico-class battleships of the United States Navy. Commissioned in 1918, she served with distinction in both World War I and World War II. During World War I, the USS New Mexico did not see combat as the war ended shortly after her commissioning. However, she participated in various post-war operations, including serving as the flagship of the Pacific Fleet. In the interwar period, the USS New Mexico underwent several modernizations, enhancing her armament, armor, and propulsion systems to keep her battle-ready in a rapidly changing naval environment. These upgrades included the installation of anti-aircraft guns and improvements to her fire control systems. During World War II, the USS New Mexico played a significant role in the Pacific Theater. She was involved in numerous critical operations, providing naval gunfire support during amphibious landings and engaging enemy ships and shore installations. Some of her notable engagements include the Aleutian Islands campaign, the Battle of the Gilbert and Marshall Islands, and the Battle of Leyte Gulf. Her 14-inch guns were particularly effective in bombarding enemy fortifications and supporting ground troops during these invasions. One of the most notable moments in her service was during the Battle of Lingayen Gulf in January 1945, where she was hit by a kamikaze attack, causing significant damage and casualties. Despite this, the USS New Mexico continued to serve valiantly until the end of the war. After World War II, the USS New Mexico was involved in occupation duties in Japan before being decommissioned in 1946. She was sold for scrap in 1947, marking the end of her distinguished naval career. The USS New Mexico (BB-40) exemplified the strength and resilience of American battleships, contributing significantly to the success of naval operations in World War II and demonstrating the evolving nature of naval warfare through her service and upgrades. #battleship #navalhistory #ww2 #sailor #MilitaryHistory

The USS Mississippi (BB-41) was a New Mexico-class battleship of the United States Navy. Commissioned in 1917, she played a significant role in both World War I and World War II. During World War I, the USS Mississippi served in the Atlantic Fleet, though she did not see combat as the war ended shortly after her commissioning. In the interwar period, she participated in various training exercises and fleet maneuvers, contributing to the development of naval tactics and strategy. In World War II, the USS Mississippi was initially part of the neutrality patrols in the Atlantic. After the attack on Pearl Harbor, she was transferred to the Pacific Theater, where she played a vital role in numerous campaigns. The battleship provided naval gunfire support during key operations, including the Aleutian Islands campaign, the invasion of the Gilbert and Marshall Islands, and the Battle of Leyte Gulf. Her powerful 14-inch guns were instrumental in bombarding enemy fortifications and supporting amphibious landings. One of the notable incidents in her wartime service was the accidental explosion in Turret 2 in 1943, which caused significant casualties and damage. The ship was repaired and returned to action, continuing to serve effectively throughout the war. After World War II, the USS Mississippi was used for training and as a missile test ship, reflecting the transition of naval warfare into the missile age. She was decommissioned in 1956 and subsequently sold for scrap. The USS Mississippi (BB-41) had a distinguished career, marked by her adaptability and resilience through two major conflicts, and she played a crucial role in the evolution of naval warfare in the 20th century. #battleship #navalhistory #usn #ww2 #MilitaryHistory #GhostsoftheBattlefield

🌊 Did you know about the Battle of the River Plate? 🚢 In December 1939, the first major naval battle of World War II took place off the coast of South America. The German pocket battleship Admiral Graf Spee faced off against three British Royal Navy cruisers. Despite being outgunned, the British ships managed to damage the Graf Spee, forcing its captain to seek refuge in the neutral port of Montevideo, Uruguay. Unable to escape, the captain ultimately scuttled the ship to prevent it from falling into enemy hands. This dramatic encounter marked a significant early victory for the Allies. #WWIIBattles #RiverPlate #NavalHistory ⚓️🔥
