#morristime Mons Meg Rapper are making a return to Beercart! “Mons Meg are what cutting edge technology once looked like. Mons Meg was created in Belgium – at a cost of 1,536 pounds and 2 shillings. Mons Meg are so heavy that even a team of oxen couldn’t move them more than 5km (3 miles) a day. Oliver Cromwell would later refer to Mons Meg as the “great iron murderer called Muckle Meg” Mons Meg spent 75 years in England, on display at the Tower of London. The Tower’s 1821 guide said, “ of such amazing dimensions that a man may go into its mouth”. (It said nothing about coming out again though) Mons Meg Rapper are a Leith based side so famous that they named a massive cannon at Edinburgh Castle after us. Bank Holiday Sunday spent watching Morris Dancers, my first ever visit to Wetherspoons and calling into the oldest pub in England drunk dry by Oliver Cromwell and his troops on the eve of the Battle of Marston Moor. The sun came out and it was the first time we could sit outside to enjoy the sunshine. “Morris Dance” 足に付けた鈴をシャランシャラン鳴らし、木の棒を振り回しながら軽快なステップで跳ね回るおじさま達。 赤と白の縞模様が入ったフラフープを切ったみたいな半円を持ち、それを回したり投げたりするわけでもなく本当にただ持っているだけのまま舞い踊るおばさま達。 街の散策中に偶然見かけたこの踊りは、「モリスダンス」というイギリスの民俗舞踊の一種で、『豊穣祈願の舞』らしい。 なぜこの時、この場所で『豊穣祈願の舞』が踊られていたのかは一切謎だけど、たまたま通りかかった裏路地みたいな所で、地元民の伝統的なダンスが見られたのはラッキーだった。 ちなみに、最初は興味なさそうにオレンジをつまみながら舞を見ていた子どもたちが、いつの間にか棒を持ってダンスのマネをしているのを見た時、「文化とか伝統って、こうやって引き継がれていくもんなのか…」と思った。 そして、アコーディオン担当のおじいちゃんは、コスプレしてんのかと思うくらい、ほぼ『ゼペットじいさん』だった。 #イギリス #ロンドン観光 #文化 #ダンス #イギリス文化 #モリスダンス #dance #dancing #culture #morrisdance #morrisdancing #morrisdancers

This was May Day Round 2, yesterday evening at @thecockwhaley. @powderkeg_morris danced the sun up and then down again (though I can't personally say that I did, as my mind and body had fully given up before the last dance 😂). Next week is a busy one - We'll be at @buxtonspringfair on Monday, @theglobeglossop on Wednesday evening, and @holmfirthfolk on Saturday! . . . Image: Border morris dancers in a pub beer garden. They wear bell pads on their legs with short tatters, and black top hats decorated with different items including ribbons, flowers and feathers. Their faces are painted in different designs in the same colours as their jackets. They carry long sticks, which they are clashing together.

My first May Day dancing up the dawn with @powderkeg_morris at Windgather Rocks! It was a lot of fun, I didn't even mind getting up at 3AM 😂 We're out again this evening, at @thecockwhaley from 7:30 Thanks to @orourke_art for the photos! . . . They have a black long sleeved shirt, over which is a tatter jacket - a black waistcoat with long strips of fabric attached to it in yellows, reds, oranges and black. They wear a black top hat with a yellow scarf around it, and their cheeks are painted yellow, with a red and orange sun design, with small black spiral at the centre, and gold glitter. They carry a long stick that rests on their right shoulder. They also have grey compression gloves on, though this is not part of the kit. Behind them is the edge of a rocky hill and a blue-grey slightly misty sky. 2, Nicky, standing on the rocks, dressed as before, but a full length shot so now you can see they also wear black jeans, black boots, and bell pads with short tatters in the same colours as the jacket. The characters of Morris dancing, for those of you who don't know its an old English tradition most often seen around the beginning of spring/ summer for beltane 1st May celebrations. In fact when I was a child we would do these dances around a maypole. The earliest writing that they have found about Morris dancers is 1448, although it's possible it dates back alot further. This next series of photos shows some of the different things they do with sticks, scarfs and sword. Em vários lugares da Europa de noite, neste dia, o festival celta do fogo Sabbat Beltane, chamado de "A Noite de Walpurgis" na tradição saxã ou "O Dia de Vappu", na Finlândia. Na tradição celta, os Fogos de Beltane reverenciam a abundância da terra fertilizada pelos raios solarss, comemorando-se com fogueiras, danças, músicas e com a encenação do "casamento sagrado da Deusa da terra com o Deus da vegetação", representados por seus sacerdotes. Na Inglaterra e na Irlanda, mesmo nos dias atuais, esse festival ainda é comemorado, na tradição Wicca, da Deusa e no neopaganismo, com fogueiras e danças ao redor de um mastro enfeitado com fitas (May pole), celebrando a união do Deus e da Deusa e a fertilização da terra. Elege-se a "rainha de Maio", que é coroada com flores e permanece em seu trono durante as festividades. Com danças circulares tradicionais, fitas coloridas são trançadas por homens e mulheres ao redor do mastro. As moças, vestidas com trajes folclóricos e usando guirlandas de flores, participam com muito empenho das danças, enquanto os rapazes, usando sinos nos tornozelos, encenam uma competição entre as forças triunfantes do Verão e os males do Inverno, as famosas "Morris dances". A antiga tribo celta dos Averni homenageava Akurime, a Deusa da vida, beleza e do amor, ofertando-lhe objetos bonitos, atos de amor ou alguma gotas de seu próprio sangue. Akurime é considerada a progenitora de todas as formas de vida, sua beleza ofuscando a das estrelas. Nos países nórdicos celebração a Deusa Gefn, a Doadoda, que personifica a riqueza da terra e a prosperidade humana (material, familiar, afetiva e espiritual). Comemore esta data acendendo uma vela vermelha ou branca, ou pulando sobre uma fogueira pequena para se purificar. Coloque uma guirlanda de flores vermelhas e galhos de alecrim atrás da porta ou no telhado de sua casa para atrair a sorte. Use roupas de cor verde para simbolizar seu renascimento e revitalização.
