Hazy memories This week I was reminded about of a time in my life I hadn’t thought about for a very long time. I was packing up a bag of baby clothes to send to a women’s refuge. It was for a mother who had escaped an abusive husband with her three children: a 6month old and a 5 and 9 year old. Clearing out baby clothes always comes with its emotions. It’s saying goodbye to an era. But packing up the clothes for this woman made me think of all of the happy moments I had had with my children and as I folded them up I wished for the same for her and her children. I wrote the mother a letter. A little note to commend her for her bravery and congratulate her for escaping but also to let her know that I too had been a child who had run away with her mother. Once living in a nunnery for a period of time in hiding and another time lying down in a field in the hope of not being found. My mother had a fuschia dress on, not ideal for blending in with the corn. My memories of those moments though hazy are strangely more of excitement and adventure rather than trauma. It all felt like a game. Though clearly not so for my mother. Maybe that’s how she explained it to me as we ran down the road and into the field. I wanted this mother to know that, though it must be so worrying for her to think about how this experience will affect her children, the import thing is she got away. Children are surprisingly resilient and though I’m sure the road will be rocky she has done the hard part. For all those Mama’s out there trapped in a bad relationship. You can leave. You will have a better life. You deserve more. #StaffordshirePolice is joining forces with #SmartWaterGroup to deter perpetrators of #DomesticAbuse by using #SmartWater to help protect victims. The idea, first trialled by South Yorkshire Police, is to deliver an additional layer of protection to victims; providing them with means of #forensically marking important areas and items in their homes in order to help identify perpetrators. SmartWater Technology products will be distributed to those identified as high-risk by the force. The products provide a unique #forensic code which have a proven track record for identifying property and linking offenders to the scene of their crime. Sergeant Mark Burslem, of Cannock neighbourhood policing team (NPT), said: “We hope this trial will help those at risk from domestic abuse and stalking feel safer in their homes as well as more secure in the possession of their valuables." I emigrated, lost my father to a terminal lung disease, and then my inspirational and pioneering journalist friend #tazeenahmad was diagnosed with Stage 4 lung cancer. I lost her too. So forgive me for not posting and just counting the breaths for a while. Tazeen’s loss did introduce me to her other friends including the talented @jpflintoff who drew these for @womanstrust which Tazeen was a patron of. The charity helps women in London affected by domestic violence and abuse by providing free counselling and support services. With #domesticviolence cases soaring since lockdown, they are in massive demand. #insomnia = joining hexie flowers . So, lockdown is getting to me a bit. Staying at home is fine (I hated going out anyway!) Not seeing people is fine (especially as I'm actually talking to more friends using zoom etc). "Homeschooling" is fine (mostly because we're not doing anything structured, just learning through play) What's not fine is being, for lockdown purposes ONLY, part of a 'household' with the ex. Because the smalls are split 50:50 between us we are essentially isolating 'together' across both of our houses. He is the only other adult I have seen in person for the last month and vice versa. . The attempts at control are ramping up, The manipulation. The gaslighting... It's exhausting. I can see it for what it is now that I'm out of the relationship, but it still affects me however strong I am and however much I try to ignore it and rise up. His goal is to get me back under his roof. Hell will freeze over before that happens. But the next best thing is to make me question my sanity. To make me feel weak and guilty and incompetent. And then use that as the reasons to have the Smalls more than I do. . I'm so thankful that this lockdown has happened since getting out.
