Super Bowl Sunday: This November will be 20 years since I started listening to that quiet voice that whispered that it’s my life’s destiny to be an advocate for children’s rights in sport. I never dreamed or imagined where it would take me over the last few decades. Losing Paul to CTE is something I would have not foreseen, but I’m beyond grateful that I listened to that whisper back in 2003. We miss him more every day, it never gets easier, but we do rejoice in his memory and how he’s changed the world in his short 24 years. The Department of Social Work-PG of St Edmund’s College Shillong in Collaboration with Child Friendly Shillong organised a World No Tobacco Campaign on 18th May 2024 in Mawlai Mawdatbaki, Nongpathaw, Shillong. In this Campaign, the MSW students with Child Rights Club of Nongpathaw conducted various programmes including a Poster Display, Campaign Walk in the Nongpathaw locality, an Action Dance by the Children of CRC Nongpathaw, a short talk on the impact of Tobacco by the MSW students and a closing remark by the Rangbah Dong of Nongpathaw. This programme aim to educate and raise awareness amongst the people about the danger and harmful effect of using Tobacco and advocating for a Tobacco Free Environment and Implementing rigorous policies to combat the use of Tobacco. In addition, this program create a platform for Children and Students to empower and enable themselves to make informed decisions for a better and healthy well being and to be equipped with positive choices to resist the use of Tobacco. The Programme provides with an objective of service learning for the students to incorporate and Integrate theoretical knowledge in their field of practice . Through this initiative, the students were able to engaged themselves with the Children in the community and enhance them to strengthen community participation for a collaborative effort in combating this issues which is commonly practice across the state and the country.
