The farming sector is facing a challenge. By 2030, the number of people within the global middle class is expected to grow to five billion and by 2050, 10 billion people will live on our planet. Farmers will need to supply more milk, meat, fish and eggs than ever before, while using fewer resources. But farms are stepping up to the challenge by adopting practices that can make production more efficient. Here’s three that are having success already: 🐮 Prioritising animal health: Healthy animals are generally more productive, meaning they produce more meat or milk while requiring fewer resources. By prioritizing preventative veterinary care and proper living conditions, farms can reduce waste and improve overall efficiency. 🐮 Adjusting nutrition mix: This can involve a couple of things. One is focusing on animal health. Healthy animals are more efficient, which means they produce less methane, a greenhouse gas, per unit of meat produced. The other approach is to look at the feed itself. Researchers are experimenting with feed additives that can reduce methane production, or even using food industry byproducts like leftover beet pulp to reduce reliance on resource-intensive crops. 🐮 New technologies: Tech is playing a role in sustainable livestock farming as well. Precision fermentation is one example. This involves using microbes to create animal protein products without the need for raising animals. While this technology is still in its early stages, it has the potential to be a game-changer. www.livestock247.com #livestock247 #livestock #sustainability #technology #sustainableagriculture #sustainablefarming #animalhealth #animalnutrition

Livestock247, conducting cow identification and treatment activities in Wuro Mogoggo, Sardauna Local Government Area. Cows are identified using standard and internationally recognised microchip implants. Microchips are injected under the skin of cattle to make it easier for farmers and animal health professionals to identify them and obtain accurate medical information, histories, and records. The serial number on the #microchip identifies the cow, which is then entered into our #database for #monitoring and #traceability. This aids in the monitoring of #cow activities and events that occur throughout its life cycle, such as #migration and #movement. This can be useful in the monitoring and prevention of the spread of #animal diseases; and in maintaining the #security of the cattle. Farmers benefit from Livestock 247 through animal identification by microchipping in the following ways: • Animal Record Keeping • Remote and real-time availability of animal records. • Provision of comprehensive animal #healthcare. • Monitoring animal behavior and movement. • Establishment ownership. • Possibility of #insurance claims. • #Education, #Advocacy, and #sensitisation on relevant #animalhusbandry and care topics. All of these and more are part of our efforts to prevent the spread of zoonosis within Africa while mainstreaming the livestock sector. Avian Influenza Reaches Dairy Cattle The recent reports of avian influenza in dairy cattle merit attention. Though the disease mainly targets poultry and wild birds, it can infect mammals, including humans. These cattle infections could indicate an increased risk of the virus becoming better adapted to mammals, and potentially spilling over to humans and other livestock. Current studies are underway to further explore the virulence and transmissibility of these viruses, including among cattle, and to assess the risk of transmission to animals and humans. While there have been recent cases of Avian Influenza (bird flu) infecting dairy cattle in the United States, the World Health Organisation (WHO) reports no cases infecting cattle in Africa yet. The recent outbreak in the United States primarily affects the H5N1 subtype and appears to be spread by wild birds or farming practices such as milking machines. It's critical to stay current on animal health developments in your area. Make sure to check with local veterinary services for any updates or specific recommendations. www.livestock247.com #healthythursday #mitigatingzoonosis #fever #avianinfluenza #dairycattle #africa #zoonosis #publichealth #healthawareness #zoonoticdisease #livestock247

Sustainable agriculture is all about finding a balance between meeting our current needs and preserving the ability to meet future needs. This complexity means there's no one-size-fits-all approach. Here's why sustainable agriculture requires a range of approaches: 📌Varied environments: Different climates, soil types, and water sources require specific practices. What works in a dry region won't necessarily work well in a wet one. 📌Diverse crops and livestock: Each crop or animal has its own needs. Sustainable practices for raising cattle are different from those for growing tomatoes. 📌Social and economic factors: Sustainable practices should also consider the needs of farmers and local communities. A practice might be environmentally sound but not economically viable for a small farm. Therefore, successful sustainable agriculture involves a toolbox of techniques. These can include crop rotation, cover crops, integrated pest management, water conservation methods, and more. Farmers need to choose the right combination of practices for their specific situation. www.livestock247.com #sustainableagriculture #sustainablefarming #didyouknow #sustainablepractices #livestockmanagement #smallholderfarmers #farmers #farmerschallenges #resources #livestock247

Agroforestry is indeed recognized as a top sustainable farming method and practice that integrates trees and shrubs into agricultural systems. This approach combines elements of forestry and agriculture to create diverse, resilient, and sustainable land-use systems. Here are some key reasons why agroforestry is considered a sustainable farming method: 🌳 Biodiversity Enhancement: Agroforestry promotes biodiversity by incorporating a variety of trees, crops, and sometimes livestock into the same landscape. This diversity provides habitat for various species, fostering a more resilient ecosystem. 🌳 Soil Conservation: Trees and shrubs in agroforestry systems help prevent soil erosion by reducing water runoff, improving soil structure, and stabilizing the landscape. This contributes to long-term soil fertility and health. 🌳 Climate Change Mitigation: Trees are effective carbon sinks, absorbing and storing carbon dioxide from the atmosphere. Agroforestry, by increasing tree cover, contributes to carbon sequestration, helping mitigate climate change. 🌳 Economic Benefits: Agroforestry systems often provide multiple sources of income for farmers. Trees can yield timber, fruits, nuts, or other products, diversifying revenue streams and reducing dependence on a single crop. 🌳 Resilience to Climate Variability: The diversity in agroforestry systems makes them more resilient to climate variations and extreme weather events. Different components of the system may respond differently to changing conditions, providing a buffer against crop failures. 🌳 Sustainable Resource Use: By integrating trees into agricultural practices, agroforestry helps manage natural resources more sustainably. This includes the responsible use of water, soil, and biodiversity.

The global mental health crisis is a significant and growing public health challenge that affects individuals, communities, and societies worldwide. Several factors contribute to this crisis, and addressing them requires a comprehensive and multi-faceted approach. 📌Prevalence of Mental Health Disorders: Mental health disorders, such as depression, anxiety, and schizophrenia, affect a substantial portion of the global population. The World Health Organization (WHO) estimates that one in four people will be affected by mental or neurological disorders at some point in their lives. 📌Stigma and Discrimination: Stigma and discrimination surrounding mental health issues persist globally, preventing individuals from seeking help and support. This stigma can be deeply ingrained in cultures, leading to feelings of shame and isolation for those dealing with mental health challenges. 📌Access to Mental Health Services: Substance abuse often coexists with mental health disorders, forming a dual challenge. The relationship between substance abuse and mental health issues can create a cycle that is challenging to break without targeted interventions. 📌Global Trauma and Stressors: Events such as wars, natural disasters, and pandemics can have profound effects on mental health. The COVID-19 pandemic, for example, has exacerbated existing mental health challenges and introduced new stressors. 📌Economic Impact: Mental health issues have a significant economic impact on both individuals and societies. Lost productivity, increased healthcare costs, and the burden on social support systems contribute to the overall economic cost of the mental health crisis. Addressing the global mental health crisis requires coordinated efforts at the local, national, and international levels. Key strategies include: 📌Destigmatization Campaigns: Promoting awareness and understanding of mental health issues to reduce stigma and discrimination. 📌Improved Access to Services: Investing in mental health infrastructure, training more mental health professionals, and integrating mental health services into primary care.

An animal identification system traces the whereabouts and movement of certain animals. Different methods of animal identification, such as branding, have been used for thousands of years, but typically as a way of proving ownership, rather than as a method of animal identification. Beginning in the 1940s, animal identification focused on the whereabouts and movement of certain animals. At that time, state and federal programs tracing movement of livestock involved in disease outbreaks were instituted for some diseases in cattle, swine & sheep, and some of these programs, such as National Scrapie Eradication Program, are still in place and effective today. Livestock247's Animal Identification and Management systems comprehensive frameworks is designed to uniquely identify and track individual animals for various purposes, including research, management, and commercial applications. The primary goal is to assign a unique identifier to each animal, enabling accurate record-keeping, monitoring, and traceability. As Africa's online livestock platform, whose mission is to mitigate the spread of zoonotic disease, through our animal identification and management systems, sensitization on various topics relevant to animal health maintenance such as vaccination. Here's are three key purpose of animal identification systems: 🐮 Livestock Management: In agriculture, identifying and tracking individual animals is essential for tasks such as breeding programs, health monitoring, and production management. 🐮 Wildlife Conservation: Researchers use identification systems to monitor and study wildlife populations, migration patterns, and behavior. 🐮 Research Studies: Scientists employ identification systems to track and study animal behavior, ecology, and physiology. We are Livestock247, and we are mitigating the spread of zoonotic disease while mainstreaming Africa's livestock business through technology.

Cows, like many animals, can respond positively to kindness and gentle treatment. While they may not express emotions in the same way humans do, studies and anecdotal evidence suggest that cows are social animals that can form bonds with humans and other cows. Handling them with care, providing them with a comfortable environment, and treating them gently can contribute to their overall well-being and may result in calmer and more cooperative behavior. According to studies, naming a cow and treating her as an individual causes her to produce nearly 500 more pints of milk per year. In case you were wondering, a gallon of milk requires approximately 350 squirts from the udder. Research has shown that positive interactions with humans can lead to reduced stress levels in cows. Additionally, cows may become more accustomed to human presence and handling when treated kindly, making it easier for farmers or caretakers to manage them. It's important to note that individual cows may have different temperaments, and their responses can vary. However, creating a positive and low-stress environment is generally beneficial for the welfare of the animals. www.livestock247.com #funfacts #animal #factsaboutanimals #livestock #livestock247

Urban farming is a type of #agriculture that is incorporated into the city’s #economic and ecological system because it creates #green space, creates #jobs, and finds another purpose for urban trash. It also helps a city become more “green” by enhancing its ability to withstand #climatechange. It encompasses a wide range of activities, from the raising of #animals such as poultry and fish to the cultivation of non-food items like aromatic and medicinal herbs or ornamental plants. It also includes the cultivation of various types of crops, such as grains, vegetables, mushrooms, and fruits. This form of agriculture has gained popularity as a response to the challenges posed by rapid #urbanization, population growth, and concerns about #foodsecurity and #sustainability. Urban agriculture takes various forms and can include #gardening, #rooftopfarming, #verticalfarming, community gardens, and more. Here are some key aspects of urban agriculture: Food Security: Urban agriculture can contribute to local food security by reducing dependence on long supply chains and providing fresh produce within the community. Community Gardens: These are shared spaces where community members collectively cultivate fruits, vegetables, and herbs. Community gardens provide a sense of #community, promote social interaction, and contribute to local #foodproduction. Rooftop Farming: Utilizing rooftops for agriculture is a common practice in urban areas with limited horizontal space. Rooftop #farms can be found on the tops of buildings, providing an opportunity to grow food and mitigate the urban heat island effect. Overall, urban agriculture offers a range of benefits, including increased access to fresh produce, community building, #environmentalsustainability, and the promotion of local economies. However, challenges such as limited space, soil contamination, and regulatory issues need to be addressed to ensure the success of urban agriculture initiatives. www.livestock247.com #urbanagriculture #urbanfarming #agriculture #technology #sustainablefarming #sustainableagriculture #sustainability #food #agritech #livestock247

Agriculture is the world's largest industry. It employs over one billion people and produces over $1.3 trillion in food annually. Sustainable agricultural operations can help preserve and restore critical habitats, protect watersheds, and improve soil health and water quality. However, unsustainable practices have serious consequences for both people and the environment. The need for sustainable resource management is becoming more pressing. As the world's population grows, so does demand for agricultural commodities. Agriculture's deep ties to the global economy, human societies, and biodiversity make it one of the most important conservation frontiers on the planet. One of the most pressing conservation issues of the 21st century is how and where we produce food. Every day, the challenge of sustaining life on an increasingly crowded planet of more than 7 billion people becomes more difficult. Our planet will be home to an additional 2 billion people by 2050. How will we feed everyone? There will be more people, but there will also be more money to spend on food. www.livestock247.com #agriculture #sustainableagriculture #foodsecurity #livestock247

Hydroponics and aquaponics are two innovative and sustainable farming practices that have gained popularity due to their efficient use of resources and potential for high yields. With the help of specialised nutrients that are given to water, plants are grown using these cutting-edge agricultural methods without the use of soil. Crops are grown in hydroponic systems with their roots either directly in a mineral solution or in a dormant medium like gravel or perlite. Aquaponics is the practice of keeping aquatic animals, such as fish, while also cultivating hydroponic plants. In aquaponic systems, the hydroponic plants are fed with water that contains waste products from the aquaculture fish. The water is then flowed back into the system after being utilised by the plants so that the fish can continue to utilise it. Benefits of Hydroponics and Aquaponics: 📌Water Conservation: Both systems use water more efficiently than traditional farming, making them ideal for regions facing water scarcity. 📌Reduced Environmental Impact: They minimize the need for chemical fertilizers and pesticides, promoting sustainable and eco-friendly agriculture. 📌Year-Round Production: Controlled environments allow for year-round cultivation, increasing overall productivity. 📌Space Utilization: Vertical farming and other space-efficient configurations enable cultivation in urban areas. In conclusion, hydroponics and aquaponics offer sustainable alternatives to traditional farming, addressing key challenges such as water scarcity, land use efficiency, and environmental impact. As technology continues to advance, these methods are likely to play an increasingly important role in global food production. www.livestock247.com #sustainablefarming #sustainability #foodsecurity #waterconservation #foodproduction #hydroponics #aquaponics #livestock247

Feeding the world in a sustainable way is one of our most pressing challenges in the coming decades. Meat plays a pivotal role in this. Meat is an important source of nutrition for many people around the world. Meat often makes a regular appearance in the diet of humans. Whether you choose red or white meats, meat is rich in protein, vitamins, and minerals. It can be sourced from various animals, the most popular including cow, goat, and chicken. At Livestock247, our aim is to mitigate the spread of zoonotic diseases through the provision of fit-for-slaughter and traceable livestock to our customers, it is expedient that we discuss the nutritional facts of Goat Meat and Cow Meat. Animal-source foods are energy dense and are a rich source of protein, minerals, vitamins and essential fatty acids. The protein in these foods is considered to be of the highest quality because of its favorable amino-acid composition. Iron, zinc and vitamin A are the main micronutrients available in meat; calcium, vitamin B12 and riboflavin are provided in abundance by milk, which is however very low in iron. (a) Compared to foods derived from plants, the bioavailability of these nutrients in animal sourced foods is high, because of the presence of hemeprotein and the absence of phytates and fiber (b). The roles of animal-source foods in human nutrition have been widely discussed, including their roles in alleviating undernutrition and deficiencies that lead to poor growth (c), impaired mental development and ill health and their beneficial and potential negative roles with respect to diet related non-communicable diseases (d). www.livestock247.com #nutrition #sustainablelivestock #nutritionalvalue #livestock #livestock247 Ref: a. Livestock and poultry producers are key in helping to reduce the development and spread of antimicrobial resistance. Animals, like people, carry germs in their gut, including antimicrobial-resistant germs. Resistant germs have been identified in poultry and livestock (e.g., cattle, swine, sheep, and goat) and the food they produce around the world. Adopt these practices to continue protecting the health of animals and people. At Livestock247, we are preventing and controlling the spread of antibiotic resistance, by: 🦠 Only giving antibiotics to animals under veterinary supervision. 🦠 Not using antibiotics for growth promotion or to prevent diseases in healthy animals. 🦠 Vaccinate animals to reduce the need for antibiotics and use alternatives to antibiotics when available. 🦠 Promote and apply good practices at all steps of production and processing of foods from animal and plant sources. 🦠 Improve biosecurity on farms and prevent infections through improved hygiene and animal welfare. Livestock247 has made enormous contributions to decreasing the spread of antibiotic resistance around the world, and it continues to do so in Nigeria through improved livestock nutrition, veterinary care, and breeding by providing healthy livestock such as goats and cows to consumers, as well as resources and training to farmers to ensure their herds are healthy and fruitful. Do you know that Livestock247 is working with the framework outlined in the Sustainable Development Goals to transform the #livestocksector? Most of the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) is directly related to #livestock, which is essential to achieving many of the SDGs. Demand for livestock products is rising in #developingnations due to population expansion, income growth, urbanisation represents a significant chance for hundreds of millions of underprivileged #smallholder livestock farmers, #processors, and #marketers—many of whom are women—to satisfy market demand and escape poverty. The essential nutrients found in #livestockproducts (meat, milk, and eggs) help to ensure the security of food and nutrition. Children's physical development, as well as their cognitive and learning abilities, are all benefited by including even small amounts of #foods derived from animals in their #diets. There four key sustainability goals stood out for us at Livestock247 1. Satisfy human food needs, and contribute to biofuel needs. 2. Enhance environmental quality. 3. Sustain the economic viability of agriculture. 4. Enhance the quality of life for farmers, farm workers and society as a whole. The goal of Livestock247 is to improve the efficiency of #livestockproduction in #nigeria and #africa as a whole, particularly #productivity per #animal through our #animalidentification process, as well as mitigating the spread of #zoonoticdiseases through #sensitization and awareness of diseases dangerous to both humans and animals, in order to double #livestockproductivity while halving its negative environmental impacts, including greenhouse gas emissions. The #livestock discussion has been on how to boost productivity while being environmentally responsible. The UN 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development has given the discussion a new and larger dimension. It has switched the conversation's focus from supporting #sustainable #production in general to boosting the sector's contribution to the accomplishment of the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). www.livestock247.com #sustainabilitygoals #sustainabilitygoals2030 #livestock247

Africa's contribution to global warming is minor, despite the fact that the people may be the hardest afflicted by its consequences. Climate change has a significantly higher overall influence on animal output and health than a simple increase in average annual temperature. Climate change may have direct or indirect consequences on animal health. Changes in environmental circumstances such as air temperature, relative humidity, precipitation, drought, and floods are mostly responsible for the direct consequences (Lacetera 2019). Temperature-related animal morbidity and mortality are caused by certain environmental circumstances. Climate change has an indirect impact on animal health and output due to changes in microbial density and distribution of vector-borne diseases, food and water scarcity, or foodborne infections (Lacetera 2019). Reduced feed quantity and quality; decreased feed intake; scarcity of water; increased frequency and severity of diseases and deaths; poor growth rate; decreased quantity and quality of meat and milk; poor reproductive performance; increased costs for disease control and animal production (Thornton et al. 2009). All of this leads to poor animal health and productivity, diminished animal welfare, and decreased income for affected communities and countries as a whole. Climate change resilience is determined by the vulnerability of affected animals and communities. The degree to which African livestock production systems are vulnerable or incapable of coping with the detrimental consequences of climate change is referred to as vulnerability. This is why Livestock247 advocates for climate-smart agriculture (CSA), as it is the most effective method for transforming and reorienting agricultural systems to promote animal health and welfare in the face of rising climate-change realities. We contribute to emissions reductions through our Hoina initiative, which aims to educate smallholder farmers and livestock owners on the approach for climate smart livestock production.

LIVESTOCK247 at The 7th AgriFin Learning Event. Nairobi, Kenya The rising digital technology era offers a realistic option to strengthen farmers' resistance to shocks. You will agree that many stressors and shocks affect smallholder farmers in Africa, negatively disrupting farming systems and threatening their livelihoods. Environmental and economic shocks produce these stressors. Economic shocks include those induced by wars, which result in failed agricultural markets, whereas environmental shocks include the consequences of climate change, which result in the spread of disease occurrences and pest infestations, such as droughts, floods, and even zoonotic illnesses like Anthrax. Unlocking funding for innovation scale is one strategy to assisting smallholder farmers in building resilience. The event is still going on, with keynote speakers and panel discussions informing stakeholders and urging government authorities to implement measures to boost smallholder farmer productivity. The Role of Technology in Enhancing Livestock Breeding and Reproduction Technological advancements have transformed the management of livestock #breeding and #reproduction. In recent years, the advent of new #technologies has enabled #farmers and #veterinarians to improve #livestock production efficiency while simultaneously lowering production costs. Because animal health and production are critical components in the #agriculturalsector, #livestockhealth has a direct impact on #productivity and, as a result, farmer #revenue. In recent years, technological #advancements have aided #animalhealth and production practices. At Livestock247, we offer tremendous opportunities for agricultural #development, #povertyreduction, #foodsecurity, and human nutrition. Many countries' rising demand for animal products is met by large-scale #livestockfarming and #foodchains. Food safety and public health are dependent on #animalproduction that is efficient, #healthy, and safe. That is why we leverage technology to mainstream Africa's #livestockbusiness while mitigating the spread of animal to human diseases, one of which is our online platform to sensitize and enlighten farmers and the people about #zoonoticdiseases and how to mitigate them. One example of technological #innovation is the use of artificial insemination (AI). Livestock247's Animal Identification and Management systems is an example of that. The use of micro-chip for #traceability and fit-for-slaughtering purpose. AI also entails using sperm from a single animal to fertilize several females. AI has the potential to dramatically enhance the number of offspring produced while also delivering a more homogenous genetic makeup of the herd. Furthermore, AI has the potential to minimise the labour associated with traditional breeding procedures. Finally, #technology can be utilized to check the health of #cattle. The use of drug delivery systems such as micro/nano systems; disease management through the use of #vaccines which our various Veterinary Doctors are doing in each of their stations. http://www.livestock247.com #technologytrends #healthcare #climatechange #livestock247

Water is the most vital nutrient for animals, hence it is critical that they have easy access to clean water. The availability of water for livestock provides for maximum animal performance and health. Water intake is directly proportional to dry matter intake, and the less an animal drinks, the less feed it consumes. As a result, weight increase, milk production, and animal performance suffer. Water makes up 50-80% of an animal's weight and is involved in every physiological process. Having enough water available for the entire herd during hot weather is critical since water requirements quadruple when temperatures rise from 50° to 95° F. Water quality has an impact on herd health and performance. Waterers should be cleaned on a regular basis to prevent contamination of the water. Water quality deteriorates during a drought because the concentration of contaminants increases when water evaporates and gets stagnant. Water is crucial for animal health and well-being, just as it is for humans. Providing adequate and clean water to cattle has various advantages, including: 💧Hydration 💧Digestion 💧Temperature regulation 💧Milk production 💧Weight gain 💧Reproduction 💧Waste elimination 💧Health and disease prevention 💧Palatability 💧Behavioral well-being 💧Improved feed efficiency 💧Weight maintenance The amount of water an animal requires each day is determined by its size, stage of development, and average daily temperature. varying animal species require varying amounts of water. Maintain an adequate supply of clean water for your animals in order for them to work successfully. Providing clean and sufficient water for livestock is critical for effective animal husbandry. www.livestock247.com #worldfoodday #waterbenefits #waterislife #waterisfood #water #climatechange #factsaboutwater #waterconsevation  #livestock247

SDG 8 - "Decent Work and Economic Growth" - aspires to achieve long-term, inclusive, and sustainable economic growth, full and productive employment, and decent work for all. While SDG 8 does not particularly target the livestock industry, it has significant implications and contributes to its sustainability and development in a variety of ways, as Livestock247 is doing. Livestock247 promotes equitable and sustainable economic growth, job creation, and employment for everybody. We provide insightful conversations with veterinary doctors, animal production experts, and both male and female smallholder farmers by organising online conferences to maximise livestock's contribution to economic growth. Each stakeholder in the livestock value chain is thus involved in the chain's contribution and efficiency. We give job possibilities for people in Nigeria and will undoubtedly create employment opportunities for millions of people worldwide through activities like as animal husbandry, dairy farming, and meat production. We also provide trade facilitation and market access, which is beneficial to livestock farmers and businesses by allowing them to sell their products to a larger client base. The livestock industry spans the entire value chain, from production through processing and commercialization. As a result, Livestock247 promotes the productivity and resiliency of these value chains, which can lead to expanded economic prospects and long-term growth in the sector. Many of our activities such as veterinary services, animal vaccination and sensitization take place in rural areas. This way we contribute to rural development by creating jobs and economic opportunities, which, in turn, can reduce rural-to-urban migration and support the sustainable growth of rural communities. Rural communities, in particular, rely on livestock farming as a source of income and livelihood. By enhancing the productivity and sustainability of livestock operations, we contribute to poverty reduction and healthy living standards.

10/9/2023, 11:27:51 AM

Livestock247 contributes significantly to gender equality by empowering rural livestock producers, particularly women, and by contributing at multiple levels and from various access points such as income generation, market access, and decision-making. Empowering rural women in livestock production promotes gender equality and improves the livelihoods of livestock-dependent communities. We provide livestock management training and extension services to help women improve their skills and knowledge, thereby boosting their economic prospects. By participating in the livestock value chain, such as processing and marketing, women can gain economic independence and play a more active role in business and commerce. By providing milk, meat, and other animal products, the livestock business can help improve nutrition. Ensuring that women and children have equal access to these products can contribute to improved health outcomes and overall well-being. Women who have access to and control over livestock assets boost their households' health, education, and food security. According to Agrilinks, Ninety percent of women's income is channelled back into their households or local communities, compared to only 30-40 percent of men's income. As a result, women require resources such as livestock ownership, training, loans, and marketing opportunities. They should be able to obtain bank loans without too many complications. These enablers will be achieved only if livestock policies and programs aim to address the core causes of gender disparities as well as the challenges and limits that women face. Livestock keeping and production can provide a significant contribution to SDG 5's goal of gender equality and women's empowerment. The future of African livestock will have an impact on the prosperity of the entire continent. Now is the time to create the framework for livestock to follow a sustainable development path in the future.

From belts and boots to car seats and key rings... Whether it be for 'fashion' or accessories — leather is everywhere. Leather is a popular and versatile material that is commonly produced as a by-product of the livestock industry, primarily from cattle, goats, and sheep. Cow leather is described as a byproduct of the meat and dairy sectors, accounting for only 5% of the animal's worth. Before technical advances made widespread livestock production possible, early man would use the hides of animals he hunted for meat. According to research, 65% of leather originates from cows, 15% from sheep, 11% from pigs, and 9% from goats. Other animals account for less than 0.2% of leather production. Keeping this in mind, some of the most unique and interesting leather products are made from rare and less common hides. Because of its durability and polish that is impossible to imitate with synthetic materials, leather is used in everything from vehicle seats to footballs, horses saddles, and handbags. Much of the world’s livestock are farmed using labor-intensive techniques in the developing world, where animals perform several economic and other functions beyond a source of protein and dairy. Increasingly capital-intensive farming systems are being used, particularly in the developed world, to farm large numbers of livestock in a space-efficient way. Leather is used for various purposes, including the manufacturing of clothing, footwear, accessories, upholstery, furniture, and more. It is valued for its durability, natural texture, and aesthetic appeal. By utilizing the hides of animals that are already being raised for meat production, leather helps reduce waste and maximize the utility of the animal's resources. Thus, livestock contributes significantly to the global economy not only through primary products such as meat, eggs, and milk but also as a byproduct - leather. www.livestock247.com #leatherproduction #leather #livestock #livestockbyproducts #livestock247

Brochettes: Rwandan🇷🇼 national dish On Today’s #foodiefriday we want to share with you the story of brochettes. Rwanda's national dish. Brochettes, or grilled skewers, are made with chunks of marinated beef, chicken, or pork skewered. The finished product is juicy and tender, with a hint of smokiness from the grill. Beyond being just skewered meat, this dish carries a significant cultural and historical significance. Legend has it that French colonizers first introduced brochettes to Rwanda. The locals quickly embraced this new way of cooking meat, and it became a staple in their diet. However, it wasn't until the 1994 genocide that brochettes truly became a national dish. Following the conflict, many Rwandans were displaced from their homes and forced to flee to neighboring countries. Upon returning, they found that their traditional foods had been lost or destroyed. Brochettes, on the other hand, remained constant, providing much-needed sustenance to those struggling to rebuild their lives. Today, brochettes are an integral part of Rwandan cuisine and culture, available everywhere from street vendors to high-end restaurants. If you're planning a trip to Rwanda, don't miss out on this delicious dish. 🍖Here's how to make sure you enjoy Brochettes as a first-timer. 🍖Opt for the one made with beef or goat meat for a more authentic taste. 🥓Ask for the sauce on the side not on top so you can dip your brochettes to your liking ( you will thank me for this) 🧆Don't be afraid to try other local dishes alongside your brochettes, such as plantains or ugali (a type of maize porridge ) In Rwanda, Brochettes are not just a dish or tasty meal. But a symbol of resilience, tradition, and the enduring spirit of the Rwandan people. So, why not give them a try and taste a bit of history for yourself? Let me know if you are going to give it a try and don't forget to follow us for more interesting updates at RiceAfrika.com or using the link in bio.

Raising healthy and happy animals demands paying close attention to their physical, mental, and emotional health. Whether you're raising animals for food, companionship, or other reasons, here are some crucial livestock care advice. Livestock care is essential for maintaining animal health and wellbeing as well as sustainable agriculture. Livestock care and management can have a considerable impact on their development and reproduction, as well as the quality of their meat and milk. At Livestock247, we provide qualitative primary health care to livestock in rural communities. With our team of over 50 Veterinary Doctors in these communities, we are strategically positioned to deliver benefits to the entire community, bringing knowledge to residents through our daily enlightenment and sensitization campaign, including livestock best management practices, financial literacy, micro-entrepreneurship and many more. A key component of animal care is establishing a vaccination and sickness prevention programme. Vaccinations and routine veterinary checks can help to prevent the spread of diseases and infections. To prevent disease transmission, keep an eye out for indicators of illness or injury in animals and segregate sick or injured animals from the rest of the herd. It is critical to establish a solid rapport with a veterinarian who specialises in animal care and to seek their advice when necessary. Animals are similar to humans. They also have emotional and psychological requirements. Extra caution in handling and transporting them can go a long way. This can help them reduce stress and maintain good mental health. Also, providing enrichment activities, as well as creating a safe and secure physical habitat, can help animals cope with stress. Keep detailed records of each animal's health, vaccines, breeding, and other vital information. This aids in properly tracking and managing their treatment. Implement environmentally beneficial and sustainable practises in your livestock husbandry, such as rotational grazing and waste management.

One out of every ten individuals on the planet will go to bed hungry tonight. Global hunger is on the rise as a result of the combined effects of climate change, conflict, and the COVID-19 pandemic: More than 30% of the world's population faced moderate to severe food insecurity in 2021 -Heifer International. According to the Nigerian bureau of statistics (NBS), 40.1% of people are poor according to the 2018/19 national monetary poverty line, and 63% are multidimensionally poor in Nigeria. Livestock247 believes that livestock can play a critical role in eradicating world hunger and poverty. The 2022 Multidimensional Poverty Index (MPI) Survey by the National Bureau of Statistics showed that over half of the population of Nigeria are multidimensionally poor and cook with dung, wood or charcoal, rather than cleaner energy. Livestock247's objective includes preparing communities for long-term prosperity by providing them with resources and methods for maintaining these resources. Livestock247 not only supplies livestock such as goats and cow, but also resources and training for farmers' herds to be healthy and fertile, livestock feeding, and veterinary care. Agriculture expansion directly leads to economic security and growth. It benefits the entire community by reducing food costs, creating wealth for producers, and creating opportunities for other economic areas to flourish as more consumables become available. The work Livestock247 does in bringing livestock to impoverished communities alleviates poverty and produces greater economic growth and opportunity. Livestock is a catalyst for rural households to attain their livelihood goals. This is highlighted below; 📌They increase human capital by providing access to food, continuous good health, and labour for activity pursuits. 📌They help to strengthen the cultural diversity and legacy of ethnic groups and populations. 📌They add to the stock of natural capital, which offers the resources and services necessary to sustain and improve livelihoods. 📌They expand physical capital by giving households with transport, draught power, and alternative energy to support and improve their output.
