❌️ FOR EDUCATIONAL & HISTORICAL PURPOSES ONLY ❌️ During the first few years of German occupation of the Netherlands, there was hardly any armed resistance. This occurred for several reasons. Not since the times of Napoleon did the Netherlands find itself seriously engaged in war. The last time the Netherlands had fought in Europe, prior to the second world war, was in 1831 against Belgium. The Netherlands held their ground and remained neutral throughout the Great War. They did mobilize in 1914 and remained mobilized through to 1918. So, naturally, they tried to remain neutral again when the German army came knocking. During that strange limbo between the Great War and the second world war, the military capabilities of the Netherlands armed forces took a nose dive. There were three reasons for this: 🔺️The Netherlands relied on the new League of Nations and its collective security provisions and believed that it could then economize on defenses. 🔺️The people were not willing to sacrifice again after recently undergoing hardships associated with the blockade and total mobilization between 1914 and 1918. ⁉️ What blockade? The Allied blockade during the Great War prevented the country from importing needed items. 🔺️Economic concerns spurred by the Depression reduced defense expenditures and military readiness. All these reasons, plus the disarmment of citizens under German rule, led to more passive forms of resistance in the early years. Yesterday, Naomi Tencer shared her mother's powerful Holocaust survival story with 300 Sec. 4 students at John Rennie High School. Sonia Smolnik Tencer was a young newlywed in Vilna, Poland when the Nazis invaded in 1939. Forced to endure unimaginable conditions in the Vilna ghetto, she later faced four labour death camps and a death march. Before finally finding refuge in Canada, Sonia's journey was one of unimaginable hardship and loss. Growing up as the daughter of a Holocaust survivor, Naomi felt the weight of her mother's experiences deeply. I went on a leadership retreat recently to Siem Reap, Cambodia, which included a visit to Angkor Wat. I’m struck by the profound lessons embedded in the ancient stones of this majestic temple complex. Standing amidst the remnants of a civilization that once flourished, I couldn’t help but ponder the echoes of a clash of civilizations from the past. Angkor Wat, with its intricate carvings and towering spires, bears witness to a time when cultures converged, clashed, and coexisted. It serves as a poignant reminder of the richness of human history and the complexities of cultural exchange. Yet, it also underscores the enduring consequences of misunderstandings, conflicts, and power struggles – all very real leadership issues today. As I explored the temple grounds, I couldn’t help but draw parallels to our contemporary world. In an era marked by globalization and interconnectedness, we continue to grapple with the challenges of navigating diverse perspectives, ideologies, and identities. As we approach Holocaust Remembrance Day on January 27, our Foundation was invited by Lower Canada College to give a special presentation in honour of this significant day. Heidi Berger, Founder and President of The Foundation for Genocide Education, shared her late mother Ann Kazimirski's story of survival during the Holocaust in Poland. From hiding in attics and barn, and witnessing the killing of her mother in the ghetto, to rebuilding a life in Canada, Ann's story is a testament to resilience and hope. Barbara Cieply, the eldest daughter of Holocaust survivor Regina Kleinberg-Cieply, also recounted the remarkable story of her mother's escape from the Warsaw ghetto at just twelve years old.
