My dog hates outside. Specifically outside our apartment. The vet, park, car rides: he loves. For whatever reason my apartment complex is his biggest ick. He has a lot of fear that he will try pulling me the entire time. I find myself shortening his leash saying, “stay near me.” When something really spooks him he will try running away from me and will run home. To him he runs to his idea of safety: our home. Yet, that’s not really safe because I’m behind and unable to let him in, and who knows if there’s other dangers between him and our home. The Lord gave me eyes to see that I act exactly like my dog. When I’m scared or face any uncomfortable I attempt to run through it so I can come out of the other side of it quickly. That’s the opposite of what God wants. Exodus 14:14 says, “the Lord will fight for you, you need only to be still.” Being still and running are opposite actions. God tells us in fights, in fear, in worry don’t run. Be still. When we are still that means our location is the same. Near Him. He wants us near Him so He can hide us under His wings of protection. When we rush through to get to the other side we open ourselves to more discomfort and hurt because we are away from our protector: God. I tend to shorten my dogs leash so he can stay near me and keep his eyes focused on me. Hebrews 12:2 tells us to keep our eyes on Jesus so we can run the race He sets before us. The race He sets for us. Not running away from discomfort and our Father. However, this is all a choice. My dog prefers to run away from the loud sounds and newness. We prefer easy fixes and quick results. Nobody wants to sit in the uncomfortable; yet, there is where our God is. I’m calling this the year of the #grandexperiment in the garden. Every spring, like most gardeners, I tend to get lost in the beauty of all the pretty greenhouse plants. But as time goes on, my interest in old school gardening is growing. I overwintered a ton of stuff in the basement last winter, and a lot of things look rough. These chapters were grouped together because there were so many laws and information God have that to my brain I needed to understand individually and collectively. Before diving in I thought the people made the calf idol in chapter 24, I had to re-read and found so much information I didn’t know before. Aaron and the leading priests go on the mountain in God’s presence. Moses made an altar at the foot of the mountain for the people for them to worship, prior to the calf being built. Throughout these chapters, God is telling the Israelites and preparing them. So, I am attending Atah - Intimacy With God, which is my first gospel concert in 2024. In addition to getting soaked in the presence of God, I am also planning to buy music, merchandise while observing the remarkable, the absurd and the peculiar where Kenyan gospel enthusiasts are concerned. One of the peculiar things that I have already observed is the booking of seats, by mostly ladies, who have been tasked by their friends to 'book seats za upako.' The second one is Kenyans who has the habit of grabbing complimentary tickets, thereby stiffling the event organizers of income. Uchumi ni ngumu lakini si buy Kenya will do us a lot of good. I felt like God called me into community. More specifically, with others around me. Dictionary defines community as: “a social group of any size whose members reside in a specific locality, share government, and often have a common cultural and historical heritage.” I didn’t really know exactly what He wanted from me regarding community. I’m an introvert. I find relaxation, solace, and peace in my alone time. Community of any size is uncomfortable, yet if God asks I’ll try to be obedient. I tried making my social group bigger until I realized God didn’t want it to be big, just intentional. So I rallied around my friends. I increased my intentionality. I also learned to find community in unexpected places: dog park, coffee shop, library, etc. Honestly, when you look at it that way, community can be found, made, or created anywhere. It’s all dependent on where you want it to be found. Scripture reminds us again and again to carry each others burdens, to weep when one is weeping and rejoice when one is rejoicing, to confess your sins to each other and pray for each other. God is all for community. Picking and choosing the right community is important. If you don’t have a community, pray God leads you to the community He wants you apart of. Ask Him what true Christ-like community looks like and how you can display that for others, too. It can be scary, trust me. Yet, it can also be so worth it when you find the right ones to do life with. The Book of Exodus, a series: Exodus 18 This chapter is when Moses is talking with his father-in-law, Jethro. Moses talks about God’s glory and his burdens. Jethro, as a loving and caring accountability partner gives advice. Moses could have scoffed and ignored the advice, but in humility he chose to listen. Listening opened more opportunity for Moses to be with God while also growing his relationship with Jethro. Moses’ words and actions displayed God to a gentile. Remembrance: spend time with someone and tell them all that God has done and your burdens. Humility: be humble and listen to any advice they may have. Your words and actions may display God. “Today”. In Matthew 6, we learn a lot from Jesus. He teaches us why we shouldn’t worry. He does this by modeling prayer and how our minds should be focused on prayer, instead of the worry. Verse 11 says, “Give us today the food we need”. Verse 34 says, “So don’t worry about tomorrow, for tomorrow will bring its own worries. Today’s trouble is enough for today.” What sticks out is “today.” God really wants us to focus on our 24 hours in front of us, to not look ahead because that’s where worry comes from but look to this day God has blessed us with. If we compare it to Exodus, the Israelites were in the wilderness DAILY relying on God’s provision with Manna and where to go by the cloud/fire. God’s telling us He wants our heart posture to be back in the wilderness, full dependence and reliance on Him. In these 24 hours, how can you focus on the provision and blessing He has given you without worrying about what He hasn’t given you? He is a good God. Thank Him for giving you the provision you needed this date and focus on remembering what He has already done. Today is enough for today. When I was little I grew up always hearing, “Jesus is in your heart.” But nobody stopped to explain what that meant. I once asked, “what does that mean?” And was told again, “He is in your heart.” Not understanding but hearing it repeatedly I would have thoughts and dreams of a tall Jesus cramped inside my heart chamber, waving at me when I thought of Him. I was sad that poor Jesus had to be imprisoned in my heart all the time. It wasn’t until I fully pursued the Lord that I understood how much freedom it is to have Jesus in my heart. How I get to chose to allow Him to work through me and slowly unlearn thought patterns of the world and align myself to His laws and words. I now rejoice that there’s a Holy Spirit that comforts me and a tall Jesus stuck in my heart chambers🤪 because they are with me always, even when I forget and feel alone, I know I never truly am. They are with Me. They comfort me. I don’t have time. As of 2021, research says that the life expectancy for the U.S. is 78.99 years. That’s about 28,831.35 days, roughly. 18 of those years (6574.5 days) are during childhood/school. That leaves 60 years (22,256.85 days) in your adulthood. The past few weeks in life I’ve been BUSAYY (Spoken from a Texas accent with slight dramatic effect😉). Yet, I have realized the blessing of busyness in this season. During If:Gathering, Pastor Bianca Olthoff said, “I don’t have time to play fake.” I stuck to the “I don’t have time” part. Because, we have time. The research shows that we have time, right? Except, we have time for the things we want to make time for. Like I said, life has been busy and overwhelming. I assessed everything around me and would constantly say, “I don’t have time for that.” Some things in life are a choice of things we choose to sacrifice for. For the past few weeks I’ve had a small bandwidth of time. I’ve been constantly on the move. As an introvert it truly depletes me. The blessing in this season is understanding, “I don’t have time.” Like Pastor Bianca, I don’t have time for fake. Or small talk. Or lack of growth. Or gossip. Or time wasted. Etc. There’s a blessing in knowing what you don’t have time for. It has helped me to navigate where to spend my time and attention. How to chose what to sacrifice for. A good lesson I am learning is when to say “no” and “I don’t have time for that” to redirect my focus/time. Reality, 60 years sounds like a lot, and it is. We can live a happy and healthy life and happy/healthy can be relative to each person. And yet, it is still finite. In the days of Adam and Eve they had structure and boundaries and fellowship and time with their Creator. God’s heart is for all of us to go back to that. For us to have boundaries, structure, fellowship, and time with Him. I want to encourage you, as you enter this week remember that you have a finite time on this Earth. Use it to the best of your ability. Focus on God, be intentional with fellowship, have boundaries, and display God. Use this time God has given you according to His purpose. How will you chose to use your time this week??⏰
“This fortress would become a slaughterhouse” - Francine Rivers, a lineage of Grace How often do we put up walls around us in attempts to protect us? Walls of fortress, their main design is the keep us safe from dangers. Yet, can’t these same fortresses become a sort of imprisonment to ourselves if we let it? The first trip to Canaan the Israelites feared the people and the fortified walls. They extended their wilderness season. The second time around God built their faith in Him and their confidence. They tore down fortified walls and all who were in it. This can happen to us. We can choose to live our lives in the feigned protection of walls when it can really hurt and crush us. It’s our undoing. When you stay behind your walls you limit your impact to those around you. You stay hidden. You think it’s better to be alone than to be seen or known. Your safe place often becomes your hurting and stuck place. Yes, walls can protect from danger. Yes, having walls (boundaries) are necessary. And, if we aren’t careful and learn true boundaries, we may allow ourselves to wither and become slaughtered in the same places that were once meant to protect us. There’s a line of protection and self-sabotage. The book of Exodus, a series: Exodus 12 God tells the Israelites to eat the Passover meal with their travel clothes on and in haste. The Israelites are being told to be prepared, God was about to free them. Their obedience displayed their faith. How would you feel leaving everything you knew for a great promise? You can experience that today by giving your life to Christ, turning from old patterns and living in your new life. Ephesians 4:22-24 says, “throw off your old sinful nature and your former way of life, which corrupted by lust and deception. Instead, let the Spirit renew your thoughts and attitudes. I was reading Joshua 3 and stumbled upon this verse. Joshua was exalted in position. He took Moses place. God exalted Joshua so the Israelite would respect him and not compare him to Moses. I asked God, “Lord, how do you want to exalt me?” We first defined what exalted meant. He then told me “character”. We then defined what that meant. I asked God what that all meant. He told me He wants to increase, or raise, my individual identity and qualities. Joshua had to be elevated in position otherwise the Israelites would always see him as Moses assistant. God is trying to elevate my identity otherwise I will forever hold back in the shadows. Oof. Hiding in the shadows while trying to give God glory is very different than standing in His life and worshipping Him always. He is… The other day I was listening to “God chose you…will you?” By Steven Furtick. He read through Jeremiah 1:4-9 “The Lord gave this message: “I knew you before I formed you in your mother’s womb. Before you were born I set you apart and appointed you as my prophet to the nations.” “Oh sovereign Lord,” I said, “I can’t speak for you! I’m too young!” The Lord replied, “Don’t say, ‘I’m too young,’ for you must go wherever I send you and say whatever I tell you. And don’t be afraid of the people, for I will be with you and will protect you. I, the Lord, have spoken!” Then the Lord reached out and touched my mouth and said, “Look, I have put My words in your mouth!” At one point during the sermon, he said, “Whatever you put behind the words, “I am” is a direct reflection on your Maker, bc that’s His Name.” Whooo did that hit. What you put after the phrase “I am…” is how you view God. That got me thinking. If He is good, then He has instilled qualities of goodness in me. If He is creator, He has instilled qualities of creation and a creative mindset in me. If He is funny (bc He is) then He has instilled humor and the ability to laugh in me. This begs the question, how is your view of God distorted bc your view of yourself is distorted? What is your view of yourself? How does it compare to your view of God? What characteristic of God can you learn to see in yourself? Bc, if He is the great I Am, when we use “I am” we have to remember that that’s also speaking of Him. The book of Exodus, a series: Exodus 5 We all have Pharaoh’s in our lives. He played a specific role for the Israelite’s. He oppressed them and he was a lost sheep. Do you experience a Pharaoh in your life? Someone who makes you feel small? Someone who restricts you in some area in your life? Someone who, despite all the hurt, God is calling you to display His goodness and love? I know I do. It’s hard. Every time a new challenge or new Pharaoh comes into my life I struggle and rely on God, yet I am shown how hard of a job Jesus had. To love His enemies, to forgive His enemies, to open God up to His enemies. As we aim to be more Christ-like, that means putting our pride and hurt aside and showing Jesus to those who are against us. It may not be having to tell of Him. Moses and the Israelites got to show God’s glory through the Red Sea, so many ppl heard of God then. Showing Jesus means being like Jesus in our thoughts, acts, and words. How can you show Jesus to a lost sheep this week? Luke 14:15-24 God prepares a feast for us. He wants everyone there. To make Heaven crowded means to tell everyone of Him. When I think of this I get excited and I smile at God saying, “God, use me. Help me be Your vessel who makes Heaven crowded.” Until He does. Then I question everything. “Me? You want me to do what? You want me to speak to them? But what if they think I’m crazy or don’t listen. I think there’s someone better suited for this than me. I think that’s not God speaking, so I’ll try again when the message is clear.” Yet scripture is clear. Scripture says in verse 23, “So his master said, ‘go out into the country lanes and behind the hedges and urge anyone you find to come, so that the house will be full…” My word for the year is: Witness That means to witness God’s goodness and faithfulness in all situations, which means my perspective needs to stay on Him. But, not only is this me seeing His goodness, it also means I am to tell of His goodness and faithfulness! Not for my benefit but rather for His glory and to make Heaven crowded! The tale of the flip flops. If you’re anywhere like me as a child of ‘earlier decades’ growing up in #southdakota you might know this story. In the summer, I always got a new pair of cute #flipflops or #thongs as we actually called them 😂 The reality was that I wore them about 10% of the time when we went to town and 90% of the time I was barefoot. My feet were tough as nails. I could walk on blazing hot gravel with no prob 🔥 This summer trend has continued with me thru several decades, TBH. But for some reason this spring there were no flip flops to be found anywhere (curses to you, #walmart) except for fancy $30 ones you had to order online. Also, I was extremely disappointed with the #largepuffysandal trend. So ugly! But, lacking other options and needing some kind of #gardensandal and #housesandal I decided to admit defeat and give them a try. What a wonder working miracle from Jesus. While they asked for no photography in the buildings, I was continually struck by the stories of survivors and overcomers and God’s promise to always preserve a remnant. The first two pictures are of the awning roof, continued from the rest of the triangular building, windowless except for a crack across the top, which the architect designed to represent hope even in the darkest of times, and sunlight over Jerusalem representing the hope of a future for God’s people. I also spent some time reflecting and praying for all those around the world still facing and seeking to recover from genocides and trauma. For each unseen soul, the Lord knows their name. Isaiah 65:9 I will preserve a remnant of the people of Israel and of Judah to possess my land. Those I choose will inherit it, and my servants will live there. Jeremiah 29:11 For I know the plans I have for you,” declares the Lord, “plans to prosper you and not to harm you, plans to give you hope and a future. Gethsemane The Garden of Gethsemane, meaning “oil press,” is situated on the Mount of Olives and is where Jesus spent time in prayer and agony after the last supper and before being arrested and crucified. He brought his three closest friends and told them to watch and pray so that they would not fall into temptation but they grew weary and slept (Matthew 26:36-46). Like the olives, He was pressed, yet not crushed, Yeshua HaMashiach, our anointed Salvation. What a privilege it was to spend an hour of prayer in this place, and see the stone where it is believed that Christ himself knelt and prayed. Because of His resurrection life, we can bring God our deepest fears and concerns, and echo Christ, “yet not my will, but yours be done.” “We are hard pressed on every side, but not crushed; perplexed, but not in despair; persecuted, but not abandoned; struck down, but not destroyed…For our light and momentary troubles are achieving for us an eternal glory that far outweighs them all. Sleeping Jesus statue. 3. The darks stones would have been from 1st century, lighter from 3rd or 4th 4. Jesus would have regularly taught in this synagogue (“gathering place”). 5. Jesus offended many here when he preached that He is the Bread of Life. But like the disciples we respond, “Where else would we go? You have the Words of life.” 6. The Mikveh pool where Jesus and other rabbis would have ceremonially cleansed before handling the Word of God. 7. The home of Peter, where the first church would have often gathered and been established, and the church built above it for it’s preservation. 8. The home of the Franciscan friars who have excavated this town, making our visit possible. “Where else would we go? Caesarea Philippi. A site of witchcraft and human sacrifice for thousands of years. A temple to the god, “pan,” and a temple for Caesar Augustus “Octaviano.” Human sacrifices were offered in the cave and thrown into the hole that looks like a mouth, earning the name “the mouth of hell,” or “the gates of hell.” It was to this demonic place that Jesus brought his disciples when he asked them, "Who do people say that the Son of Man is?" And they said, "Some say John the Baptist, others say Elijah, and others Jeremiah or one of the prophets." “He said to them, "But who do you say that I am?" “Simon Peter replied, "You are the Christ, the Son of the living God." And I tell you, you are Peter, and on this rock I will build my church, and the gates of hell shall not prevail against it. i’m really not a flower person at all. buy me a bottle of wine or costume jewellery cause flowers don’t do it for me… until i moved to van. here it means an early spring and summer is near. i always enjoy waiting and watching for the blooms (which begin to bud late december) on the trees outside our bedroom window. and today as they are in the fullest of their bloom and beginning to fall off the trees i find myself reflecting. i’m not sure how this relates to good friday but in my heart it feels special to see them as full as they get today… a day i celebrate the greatest gift and sacrifice ever given. i’m grateful for the peace, hope, joy, love, faith, truth and power given to me as a result of that sacrifice. #jesusthings
