Sometimes the pre-game can be almost as eye-opening as the actual game. In this case, this first encounter between soul jazz organ legend-turned-fusioneer Johnny Hammond (he’d dropped the “Smith” from his surname a few years earlier) and producer extraordinaire Larry Mizell was a dry run of sorts for the album they’d go on to make the following year, 1975’s landmark Gears. Although not as distinct and concise as that album, this one wins by occupying its own distinctive sonic space, one that gleefully avails itself of the new synthesizers flooding the market at the time and that were being greatly popularized around this same time by Herbie Hancock. The synths and Fender Rhodes are the main attraction here keyboard-wise instead of the instrument that gave the artist his surname. Fusty jazz crits hated Donald Byrd’s foray into soul jazz, and made their views well known both at the time, and now. How dare someone who once shared a bandstand with John Coltrane sully himself with the likes of Larry Mizell and have, *gasp* disco strings? Luckily, we’re not beholden to the opinions of the newsprint, and we can make up our own minds. Which is just as well because Donald Byrd’s Places and Spaces is one of THE go-to albums in my collection when I simply need a lift. As much as I love much of Blue Note’s catalogue, nothing does it for me quite like this. Yes. I reach for this more than I do Lee Morgan’s Sidewinder. Come at me. I read someone say that Places and Spaces should be available on prescription. And actually, I can’t argue with that. The compositions are full of melodic richness, and the arrangements, although necessarily syrupy, really hit the mark. There’s something about the recording and mix as well which feels just right; everything clear and present, but never shrill or harsh. It’s an outstanding listen. I often have the title track as an earworm, and it’s actually one that I never mind having. In this harsh and unforgiving world, it’s an incredible thing that we have things like this that take us to a better place. I was up frighteningly early this morning, but seized the opportunity to have a positive start to the day. And this is what I put on. Read into this.

Donald Byrd - Places and Spaces (1975) Irresistible music, turning up some heat on a cold and snowy Sunday night. Funky, suave, and hypnotic, but with enough edge and complexity to keep the listener engaged. My favorite of #DonaldByrd's collaborations with the supremely talented #MizellBrothers, but I had procrastinated picking up an original copy. Came across this less-than-glorious cover housing a minty record on a recent trip to DC and decided it should come back to Jersey with me. Very glad I finally got it on the turntable, it sounds HEAVY--the big punchy bass was a welcome surprise. I don't think people care much about the narrative around Byrd's work with the Mizell brothers (serious jazz musician goes mainstream) anymore, but just in case you've been wary: check this out. There's a lot more happening here than you might expect, both in Byrd's fluid and spry playing and in the arrangements. Let’s welcome this #affordablefunk record, produced by the incredible Mizell Brothers. Normally you won’t find affordable records by the Mizell Brothers since a long time. Luckily I found one last year and it wasn’t easy, since nowadays I mostly find their other albums. Upon first listen the record does not sound like a typical Mizell-produced record. One of the reasons is that L.T.D. was already an existing band with musicians. For other Mizell productions, such as “Gears”, they used the same session musicians that were handpicked by the brothers. That’s one of the reasons why their productions sound so consistent. Only for L.T.D. things worked differently, because there was no other way for the brother but to use the musicians of L.T.D. self. Still it’s a very nice sounding record, songs like “Love Ballad” and “Love To The World” are great songs. “Love To The World” is my favorite one, love the voice of Jeffrey Osborne. According to Larry Mizell they coincidentally discovered Jeffrey Osborne as a lead singer, because he was the drummer at first. Between the studio sessions they heard Jeffrey sing, the Mizell Brothers were starstruck of his vocals. So they decided to let hem sing all the lead parts on the album. You know those records that we were all dead excited to grab as soon as they came out? Are we still playing them as regularly as we should? I’ve slightly ignored this one since picking it up year ago if truth be told. This is exactly the sort of thing I moan at my son for when he gets a toy or some Lego and is immediately thinking about the next one…except he’s 40 years younger than me and can be forgiven for not knowing better. Donald Byrd in his absolute funk prime, kicking it live with an awesome finely honed group…I should be playing this every day. One thing I did pick up on this time that I didn’t before, there’s a keyboard sound on ‘you’ve got it bad girl’ that’s exactly what The Blackbyrds used on ‘Rock Creek Park’ a couple of years later…the sort of boring detail that somehow delights me. Byrd and The Mizells were a great combination but it’s the two guys who weren’t regular band members that really raise the temperature on this, Henry Franklin and Nathan Davis are absolutely fantastic. Edwin Starr “Hell Up In Harlem”, 1974 Alphonso (Fonce) Mizell and Freddie Perren had worked as equal partners before on albums with Eleanor Brown, The Miracles and Jermaine Jackson, but this album presented another player of importance - the singer Edwin Starr and his powerhouse of a voice! Mizell and Perren produced and arranged this motion picture soundtrack album. They also wrote the music, the songs and they did with Starr in mind cause it’s actually not that different than work he’d been doing with Norman Whitfield. What I’m trying to say is that the songs really fit Starr like a hand in glove! It’s music on the verge of Blaxplotation and it’s suited for the movies, yet it’s another great Edwin Starr album! Larry Mizell is present as a musician only. Other great musicians are Chuck Rainey, Jay Grayson, Dennis Coffey, Ed Greene and Joe Sample!
