Bobby Hutcherson - "Head On" (Blue Note, 1971) Unlike the similarly-named homeopathic bunk with an annoying commercial, this album may actually provide results if applied directly to the head, as long as it's by way of the ears. Truthfully, this is a bit of an outlier for Bobby Hutcherson, being as it is a slightly larger group with a credited arranger. That arranger is Todd Cochran. At first, I was a little disappointed with the hefty arranging, but as Hutcherson decorated the harmonic landscape and some nicely sparse moments occurred, this album grew on me. I listened again. And again. Four times in a row. It kept growing on me. I love it. This has been on constant rotation for a while now. #charleskynard Woga on @time_mainstream_records #mainstreamrecords is hands down one of the funkiest records on the label imho. Kynard sticks to organ (whereas a few of his contemporaries would switch to electric piano) and the results are fire! #chuckrainey #paulhumphries #georgebohannon are the right men for the task at hand. It’s #funk from the get go… deep bass lines and that loping Bohannon trombone rounds out a phat sounding band. It can veer into schmaltz with a cover The First Time Ever (I Saw Your Face) but it stays on the right side of ok. Tracks for me are Hot Sauce, Slop Jar and Rollin’ Shout. I checked this one on the ‘Cogs and it’s coming up pricey now which has slightly surprised me. This one is the cheaper UK issue and mine come with added bonus water warped cover. @dixogs_ Bobby Hutcherson post made me think of this slightly unloved Blue Note. I’m guessing it’s a dollar bin staple in the US as it’s always cheap here in England. A bit of Earl Klugh, some Ronnie Laws and Carmen McCrae…and then boom, the Blue Note All Stars hit an awesome funk jam with none other than Hutch rockin that marimba. It’s a monster and admittedly was the only reason I bought this but it’s also got the cheapest 70s Donald Byrd you’ll ever find…two live tracks that aren’t from the Roxy at all but who cares when it’s ‘places and spaces’ and ‘dominoes’. Donald Byrd- (Fallin’ Like) Dominoes The collaboration continued with the late trumpeter and Mizell brothers production crew. Jazz purists called Byrd a “sellout”, pulling his jazz credentials for releasing one of the best selling long players in Blue Note Records history, 1973’s “BlackByrd”, the funk and disco elements are so prevalent that Blue Note would issue a 12-inch version for club play. Ruzadun and a few of the others (Komolafe, Bias, Theus) had earlier been involved in Horace Tapscott’s Pan Afrikan Peoples Arkestra. The album features four -long- tracks, all in classic spiritual jazz style, with Ruzadun’s sister B.J. Crowley adding some vocals on all tracks. I was expressing my sadness at the fact that OG US copies of pretty much every album ever been pressed has trebled in price in the last months. This means that records are now priced at a level which I struggle to accept on moral bases. Anyway, enough about my debatable moral compass. A few days ago, I received a message from an old friend asking if I was “still after that Donald Byrd thing” (yes a number of my friends like to talk street).
