Donaldson Toussaint L'Ouverture Byrd II (December 9, 1932 – February 4, 2013 🕊) was an American jazz and rhythm & blues trumpeter and vocalist. A sideman for many other jazz musicians of his generation, Byrd was one of the few hard bop musicians who successfully explored funk and soul while remaining a jazz artist. As a bandleader, Byrd was an influence on the early career of Herbie Hancock and many others. Black Byrd is a 1973 album by Donald Byrd and the first of his Blue Note albums to be produced by Larry Mizell, assisted by his brother, former Motown producer Fonce. In the jazz funk idiom, it is among Blue Note Records' best selling album releases. The title of the album inspired the name of Byrd's apprentice group, #TheBlackbyrds. Via liner notes: "No one else but the grandmaster of the Jazz organ himself, Mr. Jimmy Smith surprises us with an original tune titled "8 Counts For Rita". Though he never received any title like "The King Of Soul-Jazz", Smith certainly mastered the Hammond B3 organ over the years. He revolutionized the instrument showing it could be creatively used in a Jazz context, and popularized it in the process. His Blue Note records from '56 to '63 were extremely influential, and are highly recommended. Like on this tune, his funky presence punctuated almost every interpretation. The 1978 Mercury LP "Unfinished Business", where "8 Counts..." is taken from, is long out-of-print and a rare collector's item."
