A sideman for many other jazz musicians of his generation, Byrd was one of the few hard bop musicians who successfully explored funk and soul while remaining a jazz artist. Today is World Piano Day, a day to celebrate the beauty and versatility of this instrument. It is observed on the 88th day of the year as a tribute to the 88 keys on a piano. On this day, we remember Kevin Toney, the talented American jazz pianist and composer who was a member of The Blackbyrds. He collaborated with many renowned musicians, like our very own Andre Delano, co-owner of 7th Note, and created timeless music. He was a friend and a mentor to so many, and although he is no longer with us, his legacy lives on through his music, which will always be cherished by the 7th Note Entertainment team. “Walking in rhythm, moving in sound. Humming to the music, trying to move on. I’m walking in rhythm, singing my song. Thinkin’ ‘bout my baby, trying to get home.” What a great song Barney Perry wrote and released in 1974. “Walking In Rhythm”, by the Blackbyrds, puts a love story into words as the man in “the story” is trying to get back home to his baby. He just wants to get back home; maybe this was about Barney and how he felt while he was on the road; who knows but so many people could relate to this song, enough so that this was nominated for a Grammy in 1976 but “Where Is The Love”, sung by the late Betty Wright, won that category. You can hear this single on their album “Flying Start”, their second album. The late Donald Byrd was the inspiration behind the Blckabyrds and “Flying Start” was produced by him. This single is the band’s biggest song and peaked at number 6. This is one of the Top 100 songs of 1975 and is a great song to kick off this Easter week. xo

† 𝑵𝑬𝑾𝑺 𝑭𝑹𝑶𝑴 𝑻𝑯𝑬 𝑴𝑶𝑹𝑮𝑼𝑬 † Farewell to #KevinToney, one of the founding members and leader of #DonaldByrd's group of super talented students / musicians #TheBlackbyrds (the band released seven albums between 1974 and 1980, plus another last one in 2012, earning two Grammy Award Nominations in 1976 and 1978; Toney wrote some of the most remarkable and recognizable classics such as " #CityLife", " #RockCreekPark" or " #DreamingAboutYou"); he then worked as a solo artist / band leader for thirty years (1982-2012), publishing eleven albums (at least, his debut record " #SpecialK" needs an honourable mention), while also lending many other artists his unquestionable talent as a sideman, conductor or arranger (for the likes of Patti Austin, James Ingram, Bill Withers, Michael McDonald, Frank Sinatra, Isaac Hayes, Ray Parker Jr. - they're really too many to be listed here). Kevin Toney passed away on March 18th, at the age of 70 (the official statement from his family was published only today). #RIP
