Big tears this afternoon with the double whammy of mother's day heaviness and saying a final goodbye to my parents' house which looks like it is scheduled to close end of next week or shortly after, following some delays. The house sale hasn't been feeling emotional (mostly relieving) but the second I pulled up today it hit me like a wall. I said goodbye to the fig tree planted in remembrance shortly after my dad died and where some of his ashes were scattered. I said goodbye to some of the hopes and dreams I had had for the space - where I imagined my mom and daughter would play together as she grew up, in a world pre-Alzheimer's. I noticed the way the house had been spruced up and repaired and cleaned for sale and felt the pangs of guilt that I hadn't been able to make it nicer for my mom while she was there. It's also a relief, and it will be even more a relief when that check hits mom's account. I also feel grateful for some of the memories we created together there. And I will be glad to put behind me some of the other memories of the time there that weren't so great. Today we went out for a drive and had coffee and cake - a standard day out for Jeddie! (Jen & Eddie) Dad wore his new ‘I have Alzheimer’s’ badge and I can’t believe the difference it made. We were sat on a bench at a busy spot and the amount of people that walked past - saw the badge and smiled or said hello. It was so nice 💜 I often feel when I’m out with Dad I’m worried about how people will interact with him and how I will react if someone is unkind to him! Senate Introduces Bill to Protect Family Caregivers from Workplace Discrimination The Protecting Family Caregivers from Discrimination Act of 2020 has been introduced in the Senate by Senator Cory A. Booker on June 3, 2020. This bill aims to safeguard the rights of family caregivers in the workplace by prohibiting employers from taking adverse employment actions against employees or rejecting job applicants due to their caregiver responsibilities. Under the proposed legislation, employers would be barred from retaliating against employees who assert their rights under the Act. Enforcement mechanisms would be put in place, with the Equal Employment Opportunity Commission empowered to oversee compliance. Additionally, individuals would have the option to pursue civil claims in cases of discrimination. This bill has been referred to the Senate Committee on Health, Education, Labor, and Pensions for further consideration. As the nation’s aging population continues to grow, the role of family caregivers becomes increasingly vital. It is crucial to ensure that these caregivers are protected from discrimination and able to fulfill their responsibilities without fear of repercussions in the workplace.
