When going through “old” Disney photos before our last trip I came upon this one from June 2017 before Ellen’s Energy Adventure closed to make way for Guardians of the Galaxy at EPCOT. On this day in #Disney History- August 13, 2017: It’s the end of an era for two “opening day” Disney Parks attractions as The Great Movie Ride and The Universe of Energy featuring Ellen's Energy Adventure both close at the end of this day at Walt Disney World. Debuting with Hollywood Studios park on its opening day on May 1, 1989 (back when the park was called Disney-MGM Studios), The Great Movie Ride employed the use of Audio-Animatronic figures, live actors, special effects, and projections to recreate iconic scenes from classic films throughout motion picture history. The attraction, located inside a replica of Grauman's Chinese Theatre, directly inspired the creation of the theme park itself. However it’s Grauman’s Chinese Theatre facade and iconic celebrity handprints will remain despite its closure. The attraction will be re-themed to a Mickey Mouse-themed ride called Mickey and Minnie’s Runaway Railway. Meanwhile, the Universe of Energy, a pavilion located in the eastern half of Future World at Epcot, will see the end of Ellen's Energy Adventure. The attraction starred Ellen DeGeneres and Bill Nye (The Science Guy). The Universe of Energy pavilion was also an opening day Epcot attraction, opening with Epcot in October 1982. It was updated to the version with Ellen DeGeneres as host in 1996. Happy #flashbackfriday Disney World edition! Universe of Energy at Epcot was an opening day attraction before being refurbed into Ellen's Energy Adventure in 1996 starring Ellen Degeneres and Bill Nye. This attraction closed August 13, 2017. These pictures are from that day. I rode this attraction one and only one time on August 13, 2017. By 10 am it was a walk on. This 40 minute long ride featured multiple movie projections detailing the science of energy. The star of the attraction was definitely the animatronic dinosaurs. The show building still stands and serves as the queue for Guardians of the Galaxy: Cosmic Rewind. This quote by Walt Disney was in part meant to discourage the idea that Disney attractions would be forever preserved and unchanged, so as to become museum pieces. Walt’s philosophy of always moving forward, creating, and improving carries on within the Disney Parks to this day. As painful as it can be to see old favorites change or leave, Disney creators and Imagineers always do an excellent job planting little nods to past attractions in the new attractions that take their places. For today’s Factoid Friday, let’s peek inside Guardians of the Galaxy: Cosmic Rewind, formerly known as Ellen’s Energy Adventure (and before that, Universe of Energy). 💡 🌌 In the queue line to Cosmic Rewind, there are several references to Ellen and Universe of Energy written in Xandarian language on the columns. DISNEY PARK ATTRACTION SPOTLIGHT: Ellen’s Energy Adventure (1996-2017) This attraction was a traveling dark theater ride starring Ellen Degeneres and Bill Nye the Science Guy. It took a lighthearted look at various energy resources, how energy was produced, the history of energy production, and the search for new energy resources. It focused on the origins of fossil fuels such as petroleum, coal and natural gas, and described renewable sources such as solar and hydroelectric power. I was lucky to ride this ride back in 2014 during my first trip to Walt Disney World. I remember some of it but it’s vague. Also closing 5 years ago today because Walt Disney World is mean, The Universe of Energy pavilion showing Ellen’s Energy Adventure at Walt Disney World’s EPCOT. The pavilion opened as simply the Universe of Energy on EPCOT Center’s opening day, October 1st, 1982 before the original version closed in early 1996 so that it could be given new life with co-stars Ellen DeGeneres and Bill Nye the Science Guy going on a time travel romp through Ellen’s Jeopardy themed nightmare. We don’t often like to remember the sad days. However, if you’re really pleased with what replaced Ellen’s Energy Adventure and The Great Movie Ride when they both closed on this day back in 2017, then maybe it’s not such a sad day at all! I remember riding the Great Movie Ride once in my first visit to Walt Disney World; however, I did not experience Ellen’s Energy Adventure. On this day in #Disney History- August 13, 2017: It’s the end of an era for two “opening day” Disney Parks attractions as The Great Movie Ride and The Universe of Energy featuring Ellen's Energy Adventure both close at the end of this day at Walt Disney World. Debuting with Hollywood Studios park on its opening day on May 1, 1989 (back when the park was called Disney-MGM Studios), The Great Movie Ride employed the use of Audio-Animatronic figures, live actors, special effects, and projections to recreate iconic scenes from classic films throughout motion picture history. The attraction, located inside a replica of Grauman's Chinese Theatre, directly inspired the creation of the theme park itself. However it’s Grauman’s Chinese Theatre facade and iconic celebrity handprints will remain despite its closure. The attraction will be re-themed to a Mickey Mouse-themed ride called Mickey and Minnie’s Runaway Railway. Meanwhile, the Universe of Energy, a pavilion located in the eastern half of Future World at Epcot, will see the end of Ellen's Energy Adventure. The attraction starred Ellen DeGeneres and Bill Nye (The Science Guy). The Universe of Energy pavilion was also an opening day Epcot attraction, opening with Epcot in October 1982. It was updated to the version with Ellen DeGeneres as host in 1996. Ever heard of a Wheezie-Brain? That best describes an autistic who perseverates to the annoyance of others. Back in 1997, I talked at length (mostly to self, without realizing how loud I did that) about #EllensEnergyAdventure, till my late DGM told me as I waited for the bus, “Forget About Ellen!” Unlike me perseverating on Tropicana Lounge after my first-ever cruise 1.5 years before that spring break trip to #WaltDisneyWorld, I didn’t perseverate on that ride later at school. Today in 1996: To handle summer crowds, Universe of Energy reopens mid-refurbishment creating a somewhat disconnected experience for guests. Radok was in place in video only (no moving screens), and, while the Ellen figure was not yet ready, the Elasmosaurus had already been reprogrammed and thus was attacking a bush.
