Took a trip off the beaten path to see The Paper House in Pigeon Cove, Massachusetts. Built in 1924, the house and its furnishings are made out of newspapers. #FieldTripFriday — Today we’re heading to a rural area of Zhejiang Province, China to visit The Concept Library, designed by @hcchstudio. Surrounded by a high grass field, spiral shell is an attempt at rural construction, integrating digital industrialization with traditional materials. The Concept Library is approximately 10 meters in diameter and 5 meters high. The continuous surface is generated by two semicircles sweeping from one to the other, blurring interior and exterior. The shell is made of red bricks, not by masonry, but all casting in situ. Sunlight sheds into the dim interior through the opening at the top. Visitors can read text inside the acrylic balls through the small holes in the walls. The text overlays with the landscape, creating a moment to connect body, mind, and nature. My younger boys have been learning about Jamestown and wanting to visit, so we went when they had a day off last week. And it really struck me in a new way that these were real people just like us, the colonists traveled for 6 months away from everything they knew, looking for a fresh start. The Powhatan had their way of life disrupted by technology created by others. Two types of people coming into contact, cultures colliding. . I think we live with small versions of this every day. Seeing it reenacted in life-size flesh and blood imitations of the past really connected with me. . Things change. We must interact with those who are different from us. Cinco De Mayo #FieldTripFriday! Peter Zecchin’s ACCESS Level 1, Kristina Siddi’s ACCESS Level 2, Ellen Sasso's SPIRIT (FMS) class and Angela Zecchin's SPIRIT (FES) took the ultimate trip to local favorite Playa Cancun to celebrate Mexico’s national holiday coming this weekend #NRTogether. Before the outing students prepped and learned etiquette skills in the NRHS PAES lab to use in the restaurant setting. Learners practiced reading menus, setting tables, rolling silverware, calculating tips, and collaborating with their speech teacher before calling to reserve a table for the class luncheon. Siddi explained her students had created a mock eatery in the lab to try out the different roles of waitstaff to understand how a restaurant functions and what those jobs entail. Of course, they also practiced being a customer and ordering up churros with ice cream as well. After ordering their drinks and main course from their server, students struck up casual conversations around the table about their weekend plans, top sports teams, recent ebays orders, Star Wars Day (May 4) and lessons they found interesting as they dined. Utilizing their vocational skills they even shared their feedback of the tasty dishes with the restaurant owner. Quesadillas and tacos proved to be the clear favorite of the day. The community experience also allowed learners to apply their classroom knowledge and skills to real-life situations. Students enjoyed the meal so much that they are already planning more fundraisers and lemonade sales to fund their next restaurant excursion! #ACCESSNR

Field trip Friday for The @bartlettacademy. We had a great time at the Clearwater Marine Aquarium. We spent time with the new resident octopus, completed the scavenger hunt, learned about all of the sea turtles in residence and how they got injured. We also took a short tour though the rescue hospital. Madison said this was exactly what she wanted to do when she gets older. When we pressed about marine biology and what part she liked best she replied that she “just wants to feed them and play with them.” So perhaps she’ll be post-op /rehab bound. 😉 #fieldtripfriday #fieldtrip #homeschool

We took a tour of Oheka Castle here on the Gold Coast of Long Island today. It is the second largest privately owned residence in the USA. It is stunning and has such an interesting history. We even got to meet the owner and the kids got a picture with him. Such a fascinating history of Long Island during the Gilded Age. Unlike other people who rose to prosperity through corruption and mistreatment of people, Otto Kahn (the builder and original owner) seemed a wonderful generous man. #fieldtripfriday

It’s yet another #fieldtripfriday — but on a Monday! Last Saturday, @sights_by_sounds held their first ever public preview and exhibition to promote their upcoming Disney auction. This awesome event was held at their gallery in Whittier and had a delicious taco bar, cocktails, a live Disney artist, and great company. It was wonderful to meet and mingle with fellow Disney collectors and enthusiasts including @bobalandla, @disneyalchemist, @justinscarred and @ally.warren, @terrir56, @calgeog, @fourthcone, and @recycling_the_magic. Here’s just a few highlights of the items on display: 1. A caterpillar head from the #mainstreetelectricalparade joins an #audioanimatronic hand, a #piratesofthecaribbean prop cannonball, and a special event #hauntedmansion tombstone. 2. This oversized battle axe once decorated #SleepingBeautysCastle and the entrance to #Fantasyland 3. A mummified head from #Adventureland’s #IndianaJones attraction, the #TempleoftheForbiddenEye. 4. A #MickeyMouse flag from the #MainStreetUSA train station. 5. A prop torch, a set of leg bones, and the ghostly organ’s sheet music from Pirates of the Caribbean. 6. Also from POTC, one of the maps hanging on the wall of the the famous Captain’s Quarters scene 7. An original steering wheel cover and, incredibly, a super rare original stamped and enameled metal #MKVII badge from #Autopia. 8. Oversized props — a giant battery and a giant oil can — from #CarsLand in #DisneyCaliforniaAdventure. 9. A #Monorail wall panel and speaker from a #DisneyWorld #MarkIV Monorail. 10. A #Disneyland “Class of ’55” plaque used to designate the remaining original first year attractions during Disneyland’s 50th anniversary. So much coal! We took the cars into the mine and had a 1-hour tour. Learned about mining practices of 150 years ago which were horrendous by today's standards, from how coal was mined to the deplorable, inhumane working conditions. Boys as young as 8 were consigned to a life underground, working their way up from leading rules and operating doors to actual mining. Mules used to pull the wagons in and out. We learned about the equipment, elevator shaft, the network of veins and tunnels that run throughout this area, the hazards of mining, and more. I don't know how anyone survived that life. They were essentially indentured servants to the mining companies. There is still coal down there. Don't be fooled by the "hospital," it was basically a stocked imformary room but it was every man for himself if injured. Yesterday I started my day at the No. 9 Coal Mine and Museum in nearby Lansford. Coal was mined underground here from the mid 1880s to about 1930. As a WPA project, miners went in to buttress and removed old timber supports with concrete (by hand). It is now strip mined. The huge breaker #fieldtripfriday❣️ lanterns evolved over a century, there are items carved from anthracite, there is history of the mining company (Bethlehem Steel owns the mines there now), items from a typical miner's home and more. The tour takes you into the mine in the old cars once used to bring miners in. NOISY! Our guide is a 5th generation miner. I found 2 antique cars in a garage st a B& B ... a 1922 transport to take people from the train station to hotels and 1929 Buick Franklin. Spent some time at the Mauch Chunk Museum (some photos to follow), which is housed in a former church. Had a nice talk with the owner of an inn across the street about preservation efforts in town, a reason she cited for making her investment. I walked up the hill to the #victorstabinmuseum, which features his diverse artwork. Yes, he likes turtles, his artist statement explains why. It is an interesting place. He came into the hallway where I was admiring his posters and brought me into a room to show me a wonderful animated video, voiced by NPR personalities, about Einstein's perpetual motion refrigerator. Look it up! Mr Stabin moved from Chelsea in NYC up to #jimthorpepa and has a museum/gallery, art studio and restaurant. #fieldtripfriday
Field Trip Friday took us to Kolekole Beach Park. We haven't been here in a couple years since it was shutdown to make repairs to the bridge that crosses over the gulch and to the park, but they reopened the park on Wednesday. We needed to run a couple errands in Hilo so it was the perfect opportunity to drive up to the park and take our lunch with us.
