The Feast of the Ascension does not only open us to see the heavens and the reality of spiritual body of the Risen Christ being taken up into those heavens to sit at the right hand of God, it also opens us to see the reason why Christ had to ascent: in order to release the Spirit and to attract everyone to him, who is the way the truth and the life, prepared before all ages to be the salvation of all people. In the Gospel passage we reflect on the universality of this action, or let’s say of new attraction. In John 12:32 the verse clearly does not only point to the Crucifixion, but also to the Ascension, which both are part of God’s salvific action in Christ. ”Will draw” can be understood to be a new law of attraction through God’s Spirit, a continuous attraction, which ends in the totality of everything being drawn back to the glory of eternal, blessed life with God in Christ. The attraction of God’s love in Christ is such that no evil, sin and separation can triumph over it. As Christ is this attraction all inclusively nothing can separate us from Them or from the salvation gifted in Them freely for all. There is a certainty in this verse that God in Their wisdom saves people, attracts people to Christ in the way God wants. And we have to realize that only God knows how this salvation is accomplished, fulfilled also through other religions or none. There is nothing else than a happy end forevermore, for all of us, gone, present and future. For the Queer people, these words of Christ offer a huge relief, a safe place where to dwell whenever someone uses Bible against them, judges them, denies salvation from them, from just being who they are. Every year students in grades 3-8 spend a day at Camp Roger, but this year we were blessed to be able to spend THREE days at Camp Roger! Students were able to enjoy a wide array of activities depending on the season they visited: in the fall there was canoeing, in the winter snowshoeing, and in the spring climbing and archery! We are grateful for these days where students get to grow in their relationships with one another and in their relationships with God as they are surrounded by His creation. The theme for 2024 – Peace and Justice in a Troubled World – is inspired by the times in which we live – a “troubled world”. The College of Canons are a group of clergy and lay people who have been recognised by the Bishop as people who have given distinguished service to the Diocese or to the Church of England. Clergy Canons have right to wear the coat of arms of the Diocese on their preaching scarf, Lay Canons wear an academic gown edged with light blue bearing the cost of arms of the Diocese. Introducing Revd Nigel Pierpoint, our host for our opening event in Taney Church of Ireland Parish, Dundrum! Born in Santry and the youngest of three boys, Nigel grew up in the Church of Ireland tradition as a chorister in St Patrick’s Cathedral, Dublin. He is married to Anne and they have two children, Claire and Stephen, as well as son–in–law Andy and two grandchildren Henry and Nora. Anne works in Rathdown School as registrar. Nigel was licenced as a Lay Reader for Dublin and Glendalough in 1995. He commenced training in the Church of Ireland Theological Institute in 2013. He was ordained Deacon in 2015 and Priested in 2016. He has served in Taney since his ordination to the Diaconate. Our preacher for the opening event is Deacon Kevork Gergees. Born in 1964 in Baghdad/Iraq, to an Armenian family who survived the 1915 Genocide carried out by the Ottoman soldiers, Kevork Gergees grew up in love and faith in Jesus Christ through his family and the Armenian Apostolic Orthodox Church in Baghdad. Married with three children, they immigrated to Ireland in May 2008. He obtained an Accounting & Business Certificate 2019. He was ordained as a deacon in 2014, by Bishop Vahan Hovehanessian, to serve at the altar of the Armenian Apostolic Orthodox Church in Ireland. This mindset can lead us down a path of pride and idolatry, subtly shifting the focus from God to ourselves. Remember, these are not our territories to claim but opportunities provided by God to serve Him and others. As we navigate our roles within the church and community, let’s challenge ourselves to shift from a ‘my’ mentality to a ‘God’s’ perspective. WHEN these young people get together each month, their church denomination barely registers. These 11 to 18-year-olds eat, pray and worship together at High Tide youth services, meeting at a different church each month. And they’ve been away for three residential holidays to deepen their #discipleship too. What they are aware of is their commitment to Jesus and to each other. And they hope their example of #churchunity is a model for older Christians. Hannah Scott, aged 18, is one example of the fluidity these teenagers feel about #denominations. She grew up at Leigh Park Baptist & attended @emsbaptist as a teenager. She helped out at holiday clubs @cogscrookhorn, and went to its youth group. Now she’s on a Discipleship Year based @stjudessouthsea “When we come to High Tide, we don’t think about denominations,” she said. “High Tide is a lot of fun and we enjoy worshipping together. At the end of the day, there is so much more that unites us, and Jesus calls us to be one #Church.” Amber Gadd, 17, from @stgeorges.waterlooville, has been coming to the monthly services for almost two years. She said: “Our church youth group is quite small and meets in someone’s house, which is great for reflection and discussion. But we love making friends with people from other churches and worshipping in a bigger group at High Tide. “We talk about the differences and similarities in our churches, but it’s great that we all come together and those things don’t really matter.” Olivia Gate, ministries co-ordinator @christcentralchurchportsmouth, is one of many local youth leaders who brings her young people to High Tide events. She said: “Our teenagers adore High Tide. It’s special because they are able to be with so many other young people who know Jesus. So often we can be quick to see divisions, but these young people just see it as one Church. “Our group has talked about denominations and asked why they matter if people just love Jesus. Among the panelists was Dr. Paul Mmbando from the Evangelical Lutheran Church of Tanzania, who shared the importance of data in facilitating faith actors to advance SRHR and reproductive justice. ✝️ CCA-WCC Asia Regional Workshop for Church Leaders on 《Ecumenical Diakonia and Sustainable Development》에서의 경험 (2) 사실 이 워크숍은 PCK에 ‘보고서’로 올리기만 하면 제게는 의무가 종료되는 프로그램입니다. 저는 공식적인 PCK의 CCA 청년 총대도 아니고, 그저 단발적인 프로그램 참여자로 왔기에 자료 정리 후 보고만 하면 제 임무는 끝입니다. 그러나 이곳 인도네시아 메단에서 저는 아시아 각처에서 행해지는 하나님의 일들을 전해 들으면서, 새로운 도전적 과제들, 엄청난 기회들을 얻어가며 열정의 쇄신을 경험하였습니다. 제가 제 스스로에게 부과하게 된 과제가 있으니, 그것은 결국 한국 교회에게 세계교회의 현재적인 실천을 구체적으로 전달하고, 한국 교회와 세계 도처의 교회 간 연결을 강화하면서 한국의 에큐메니칼 실천이 체계적으로 이행될 수 있도록 구조를 확립하는 작업입니다. 세계교회와의 협력과 아이디어 및 노하우의 공유, 상호 지지는 각 지역에 있는 온 교회에게 필수적입니다. 이는 단순히 ‘세계화’라는 근대적 이상을 무조건적으로 목적하기 때문이 아니라, 그러한 관계성은 초대 교회가 갖고 있던 것이며 그리스도의 몸된 교회들이 하나 됨이란 필연적인 일이기 때문입니다. 대다수의 아시아 교회도 한국 교회만큼이나 경직된 구조 안에서 중장년 남성들이 주도하는 허울만 좋은 피상적인 실천들의 반복에 지쳐 피로를 호소하고 있었습니다. 이러한 상황 안에서 결국 한국교회에게나 여느 교회에게나 필요한 것은 결국 세 가지 기준이지요. (1)하나는 여성과 청년에게도 다양한 교회 사업에 있어 전적인 주도권을 위임하고 훈련 시키며 그들이 확실하게 ‘이끄는 자(pastor; 목사)’와 ‘관록 있는 조언자(elder; 장로)’, 그리고 ‘보조자(deacon; 집사)’가 되도록 만들어야 한다는 원칙. (2)또 하나는 완전히 새롭고도 세부적인 교회(교단)/교회연합 사업 진행 체계를 재구축하여 일련의 사업이 특정 대형 교회나 대도시, 소수의 엘리트에 의해서만 진행되는 것이 아닌, 진정으로 각 지역 교회공동체의 의사와 실천이 반영된 사업 구조의 구성. (3)그리고 다른 하나는 이 모든 과정과 결과에 있어, 제발!! 경제성이나 효율성 같은 비복음적인 서구 신자유주의 가치에 준거한 헛소리를 하지 않고 전폭적인 지원을 약속하는 일입니다. We had a fun time at the park today for Pray and Play! We listened to the Bible story, "Jesus and the Children." We learned a new song, "Jesus Loves the Little Children," played with our colorful activity scarves, and we talked about "April Showers Bring May Flowers." After playing on the playground equipment, we hunted for hidden homemade May baskets. The baskets had flowers, candy, and bubbles in them! On Pentecost Sunday, The St. John’s Pulpit welcomes Amanda Tyler, Executive Director of BJC (Baptist Joint Committee for Religious Liberty) in Washington, DC, advocating for religious freedom since 1936. Her message titled ‘Holy Pluralism’ draws from Acts 2:1-21. Besides her role at BJC, she leads the Christians Against Christian Nationalism campaign, hosts the Respecting Religion podcast, and authored "How to End Christian Nationalism," available for pre-order. A constitutional law expert, Tyler's advocacy against Christian nationalism has earned her recognition, including being named one of "2022’s rising stars in religion" by Religion News Service. Raised in Texas, she embraced Baptist principles, leading her to BJC while studying at Georgetown University. ✝️ CCA-WCC Asia Regional Workshop for Church Leaders on 《Ecumenical Diakonia and Sustainable Development》에서의 경험 (1) 에큐메니칼은 도대체 무엇이고, 그것이 왜 교회에게 필요한 것인가요? 애당초 그것은 교회에 필수적입니까? 그 의의에 최종적으로 동의한다고 한들, 각자의 자리에서 에큐메니칼을 ‘실천’한다는 것은 무엇을 의미하나요? 특수성(particularity)으로서의 지역성(locality)을 담지하는 각 교회공동체가 어떻게 동시적으로 보편성(universality)으로서의 범기독교성(catholicity)을 ‘체감’할 수 있을까요? 감각하기 도통 어려운 것을 어떻게 감각할 수 있을까요? 제가 항상 탐구하고 있는 에큐메니칼에 관한 정의의 밑그림이 될만한 전제들을 짧게나마 정리해 제시해보고자 합니다. 제가 보기에 에큐메니칼을 단순명료하게 정의내리는 것이 힘든 까닭은, 에큐메니칼이 (1)근본적으로 관계성을 전제하기에 언제나 동적이고, 상호적이며, (2)예수 그리스도라는 진리가 각처에서 온전히 단일한 진리로 존재하기에 역설적이게도 명백히 다면적인 기독교를 성립시키며, 또한 (3)에큐메니칼적 실천이 예수 그리스도를 재귀적으로 참조하면서 비로소 정의되는 것이기에 어려운 것입니다. (1)에큐메니칼이 관계성을 전제한다는 것은, 교회는 서로에 대하여 결코 주체-대상의 구도를 상정하지 않기에 관계에 대한 정적인(static) 정의가 불가능함을 의미합니다. 에큐메니칼은 모든 교회가 전제적(despotic)이고 동일자적인 원칙에 따라서 양산될 수 있다고 보지 않습니다. 아니요! 오히려 각 교회는 각자의 자리에서 생동하는 그리스도의 몸이라는 각자가 주체이며, 또한 교회와 교회가 상호적으로 관계 맺음으로써 재차 그리스도의 몸을 이루게 된다는 점에서 에큐메니칼의 핵심인 관계성은 오직 동적인 방식으로, 끊임없는 반복적 수정으로 말미암아서만 정의됩니다. (2)열방 곳곳 각처에 전해진 예수 그리스도라는 진리는 진정으로 단일한 계시이고 말씀이며 유일한 이름입니다. 계시의 다양성 따위는 결코 존재하지 않으며, 에큐메니칼 신학은 그런 신학을 지지하지 않습니다. 성 삼위일체 하나님은 한 분이시고, 진리는 하나입니다. 그러나 그 진리가 ‘자리하는 모습’은 다양합니다. 같은 말씀과 진리가 각처의 교회공동체가 가진 맥락이나 대면한 문제들, 이해하는 정도, 읽었던 문서(구약뿐만 아니라 서신, 심지어 예수님의 어록들이나 구전 전승)가 무엇이냐에 따라서 모습이 달랐음을 이미 신약의 복음서와 서신들부터가 목소리 높여 증언하고 있지 않습니까? 세계적 종교학자 니니안 스마트는 『The Phenomenon of Christianity』(1979)에서, “기독교”란 “단일한 것이 아니라, 신앙의 생동하는 다양한 해석들의 만화경”(is not a single thing, but a kaleidoscope of different lived interpretation of faith)이라고 말하면서 기독교에게 있어 문화적 동일성은 전혀 근본적이지 않으며, 오히려 기독교는 문화적 다양성으로부터 귀납적으로 정의될 수 있다고 말했습니다(Smart, 7). 이러한 분석은 정당하며, 때문에 성서신학적으로나 종교학적으로나 이러한 다면성은 기독교에게 필연적인 것입니다. (3)에큐메니칼적 실천은 도대체 어떤 합리적 설명 내지 이론적 기반 위에 서 있나요? 이 운동은 20세기라는 후기 근대의 기독교가 자신을 세속사회의 기준에 발맞추기 위해 노력한 결과물로 보이기까지 합니다! 음, 이는 심지어 저 또한 갖고 있던 의구심입니다. 확실히 저 또한 ‘에큐메니칼 담론의 흐름 안’에 이러한 흐름이 있다고 생각합니다. 하지만 이번 워크숍 이후, ‘에큐메니칼 담론 자체가’ 그러한 흐름과 동일하다고 보는 것은 명백하게 지양케 되었습니다. 왜냐하면 에큐메니칼은 본질적으로 서구 근대가 원하는 종류의 합리성과는 전혀 관련이 없는 것, 오히려 합리성과 거리가 멀게도 성서가(어떤 교단들에게는 또한 성전聖傳이) 제공하는 “계시에 철저하게 순종하는 실천”을 행하기 때문입니다.
