A opportunity for a rare Birds Eye view from around Peterborough cathedral was one I couldn’t pass up. To see the space from these angles allows for an extra dimension of awe outside the usual one you will absolutely get from the ground level of this cathedral. The cathedral is over 700 years old with the central tower pillars were completely deconstructed and rebuilt in the Victorian era to prevent the huge tower from collapsing. Tea and cake was served in St Mary the Virgin Church when we visited the open gardens yesterday. It's the parish church of the Spencer family of nearby Althorpe House and Princess Diana's ancestors are buried in the chaple within the church. Time for the North side of Lincoln Cathedral. This space has changed much recently, with the opening of their new cafe, shop, and museum elements. You get a great view of the north transept and its 13th century rose window from here. There's also a good opportunity this side to see some of the Norman detailing on the base of the north tower. It's some very well executed work, though it hasn't yet had the same cleaning treatment the west front has had. There's also the crossing tower. This replaced the previous tower that collapsed during an earthquake in the 12th century. What replaced it is this- Early English style at the base, before it switches to late Decorated style of the early 14th century for its belfry stage. This was where the great spire that made this building the tallest in the world for a brief couple of centuries stood, at 160 metres. Without it, it's just over half the height at 83 metres. There's a little garden at the northeast corner, and in it stands a statue of Lincolnshire native Alfred, Lord Tennyson, renowned Victorian romanticist and medievalist poet. The statue itself was created by his friend, symbolist artist George Frederic Watts. Coming round the east side is the Chapter House- here you can see a view of it that wasn't covered in scaffolding, as the rest was. From here you can see it is supported by a series of strongly projecting flying buttresses. And finally, and to finish things off for the cathedral, its towering east end, a quintessential example of the Geometric style of the late 13th century in all aspects. All in all, a truly monumental building with a fascinating architectural history, and a showcase of earlier gothic styles from end to end. The Church of St John the Baptist, Stokesay 3/3.... Stokesay: In the mid 10th century, the manor of Stoke was held by Wild Edric, a Saxon nobleman, notable for his strenuous resistance to the Normans after the Conquest of England. It was granted it to a notable Norman as a reward for his part in the Conquest, one Picot de Say, aka William de Picot. He had a house and church built some time after 1068. It is recorded in the Domesday Book of 1086 as Stoches with 47 households, making it a well-populated manor. Stokesay formed part of the Saxon hundred of Culvestan. The church first dates from around 1150 and was probably the chapel to the castle, originally built by the de Lacy family. It was badly damaged during the English Civil War and rebuilt in 1654. 1) The font is smaller than most medieval fonts and may pre-date the 17th century building. The locking arrangement for the octagonal cover is a late example of medieval practice; 2) A memorial plaque to Lt Ernest Davey Tredinnick, who died of wounds received at Bufflesdoorn, the day after peace was declared in the Anglo-Boer wars, 1899-1902; 3) Cross and shadow; 4) Commemorating the Rvd.
