At the most traditional thing you can do in #DoorCounty - a fish boil! You boil fresh caught whitefish 🐟 straight from the big lake, along with corn on the cob and potatoes, over an open fire. The whitefish oils float to the top, and to get those off they add fuel to the fire to make it all boil over! It's quite the show, I call it "Wisconsin hibachi" 🤣🤣

#DoorCounty is famous for its cherries 🍒 and the cherry blossom 🌸 season is a prime time to come visit the peninsula. As a kid growing up in rural WI, my family often made a weekend trip here in mid-May just for this 🌸 Being in Madison on contract I figured I had to try. I made these trip plans a couple of months ago, and this was the only time off that would work, so I just had to hope that maybe there would still be some blossoms on the trees 🤞 ... Most of the trees in most of the orchards are indeed past prime 🥲 But in one of the orchards there was a small grove of just a couple trees that were still pretty fully in bloom (though petals literally were falling off onto my head lol so not far behind the others). This t-shirt was my first fail as a clothing buyer. It was 2021, and my first year helping Jake with ordering clothing for Nicolet Beach. I really wanted a "whiskey-style" t-shirt, convinced that because they were so popular in my then-hometown, Nashville TN, they'd obviously do well in Door County too. Jake told me, in his experience, these kinds of designs don't do well in DC. But I persisted, convinced he just hadn't tried the right "rock n roll-esque" design yet, and he let me order it even though he knew it was a bad idea. Each design costs between $500-$1200 for a size run depending on the garment we choose to put it on, so each design is a high-stakes gamble. And... Jake was right about this one not being a good idea (don't tell him I said that). It sold ok, but there was a LOT that had to go on clearance at the end of the season. The lesson here for me was not to buy for myself, or what I *wanted* our customers to like. I've since realized the key in clothing buying is to find the sweet spot between the kind of apparel you want to sell and be known for, and what your customers want to buy. It was an incredible day out in Eagle Harbor with Wisconsin Underwater Archaeology Association. EHF Director Cody Schreck, Village Trustee Tim Nelson, and WUAA Members Bob Jaeck and Brendon Baillod were able to complete high definition sonar scans of the western portion of Eagle Harbor and the harbor of Horseshoe Island. The team identified several sites of interest for further study, and used an underwater ROV to capture 4k video of the old quarry dock in Eagle Harbor, as well as a schooner wreck off the shores of Horseshoe Island! While Jack in the Pulpit (Arisaema triphyllum) is not a carnivorous plant, it is known to kill its own pollinators by trapping them inside the spathe. You can sometimes find small holes at the base of the large leafy bract from insects escaping after reaching the flowers. Lake Flies (Chironomids), likely a Buzzer Midge (Chironomus plumosus) shown here, are known to pollinate flowers like many flies do as they are attracted to the sugar content. (Some general sources state that they don't have mouth parts to feed but this seems to not be true, although it stands that they do not bite.) Flies are also generally drawn to a more rotting smell and something like the Eastern Skunk Cabbage (Symplocarpus foetidus) or the Jack in the Pulpit are ideal. Animal droppings are also a draw. The Lake Flies are a bit of a nuisance to humans and probably mammals in general, but they are not only important for plant life but are largely considered important as fish food and bird food. They also break down debris in their larvae stages and actually can indicate a healthy aquatic environment when present.
