Side note: I met David Byrne once many years ago. He was a unique, interesting, and kind person. I was about 8 years old (so it was 41 years ago). He asked me if I thought he had an accent, because people often thought he talked in a funny way. I didn’t know what an accent was. In 2005, I went to see David Byrne at LACMA giving his talk on I Love PowerPoint, in which he delivered a PowerPoint presentation so unique that it changed my views of how all software could be used for creative purposes far outside of their intended use. Last year, at Alt Summit, I presented “Choose Your Own Presentation,” which was, as you can probably infer, an audience-led “Choose Your Own Adventure”-style presentation. It was awesome. As I was mindlessly scribbling, I must have had this song stuck in my head (and I ain’t even mad) because I started to see a dancing figure - So I added a lamp and went with it like the lyric from the song, “we’ll make it up as we go along..” I just love the energy in the sketch and how I feel like the lines and weird proportions echo the movement of David Byrne’s unique dancing and it all happened rather subconsciously. And yet the whole image was dress-up rebellion. I remember being surprised at one point after having gotten to know the Ramones a little bit at CBGB: They were the only band I knew of that had an art director. Joey and Arturo [Vega] worked very closely together. There was a loft right around the corner that we could all visit and hang out. Arturo had these giant pop-art posters of supermarket price signs. I thought, “This is much more planned out than it appears to be.” Recently, I read an interview where they said, “We figured out what we would look like before we figured out what to play.” This was like a high-concept packaged-band thing, but they did it to themselves. STOP MAKING SENSE - Stop Making Sense is an independently produced 1984 American concert film featuring a live performance by the American rock band Talking Heads. Directed by Jonathan Demme, it was shot over four nights at Hollywood’s Pantages Theatre in December 1983, when Talking Heads were touring to promote their 1983 album Speaking in Tongues. The band raised the budget of $1.2 million themselves. The four core members of Talking Heads are joined by the backing singers Lynn Mabry and Ednah Holt, the guitarist Alex Weir, the keyboardist Bernie Worrell and the percussionist Steve Scales. Stop Making Sense is considered by many critics to be a classic and one of the greatest concert films of all time. Byrne himself made light of his massive suit during an appearance on The Late Show with Stephen Colbert, where he appeared in a fake ad for “David Byrne’s Giant Suit Emporium” promoting his new clothing store while insisting he did not sell giant suits like the one he wore in Stop Making Sense. While Talking Heads weren't quite the first, and while Fear of Music (1979) already pointed in this direction, Remain In Light was the bold statement that properly brought post-punk and Afrobeat together - and that made it work. Side A is a powerhouse of jagged, funky, rattling polyrhythms: it may not have 'Once In A Lifetime', but it's the best Talking Heads side by a mile. At the risk of overstatement, most post-punk bands are still trying to catch up with this album. While I couldn’t understand the hype for Don’t Look Now, I now absolutely 100% understand the hype for Stop Making Sense. The music sounds amazing (I really wanted to turn it up as loud as I could, but I would have bothered others in the house), the energy of the band is infectious, the lighting and set design is innovative, and most of all, David Byrne is just a mesmerizing performer — his oddball movements and dancing are immensely charming, and who can forget his childlike wiggling around in the oversized suit? I really wish I would have gone to see A24’s 4K restoration in theaters last year (especially in IMAX), but now that it’s streaming on Max, I’ll take it however I can get it! #stopmakingsense #a24 #talkingheads #jonathandemme #davidbyrne
