Starting with a mood board in branding helps everyone see and agree on the same style and feel for the brand. It sets the direction before moving on to design. Who is this mood board made for?
Sit with all this for a moment. How does going through the anatomy of pain point marketing feel in your body? I feel shame arise in my own body. For how many times I’ve fallen for it, for how I used these tactics myself because it was all that was taught. I feel anger that this is the water we swim in. I feel rage that I am seeing the tide of pain point marketing being used to sell the sacred medicine of nervous system work and somatics. In contrast, relational marketing invokes understanding, safety, and autonomy so you can make a sovereign choice to buy. Relational marketing takes time I am in the middle of launching Business Alchemist Mentorship right now and I’ll never use these tactics in my content even though I’d likely get more enrollments in BAM if I marketed this way. More is not better. The work we do in BAM is hard. We are disentangling threads of trauma and years of misunderstanding; restructuring what community support feels like; dismantling extractive business practices and choosing something that doesn’t always feel like it has form. This work is actually meant to be hard. It’s part of the reason why it feels so fulfilling. And it’s not for everyone. If I used pain point marketing, I would attract entrepreneurs who are idealistic in their desire to deconstruct capitalism while still wanting capitalism to work for them. I’d just be churning out students who are wolves walking around in sheep’s clothing. Not only that, but it would repel the kind of folks who would find belonging in the BAM community. We are a small army of witchy, sensitive, nerdy, feral weirdos who see business as a spiritual practice. Curious? This week's big question... "What kind of social media marketer do you want to be?" ✨ I love how the universe perfectly aligns. Yesterday, I hosted a Conscious Social Media masterclass with the @consciousmarketingmovement and I ended the session with three key points: Why is Conscious Social Media important for - marketers - brands - consumers On the same day, I received an e-mail from @campaigndelmar about how marketing can be a force for good and evil. How timely?! There is a concept going around on social media at the moment saying how's "it's just marketing. it's not an emergency." This is true. 100%. But how about we also look at another perspective -- how powerful is social media? In advocating for a cause? In influencing your perception of success? In running a business? In influencing a consumer's behaviour or purchase? We need to use social media better. We need to use social media for good. At least here at beige. social, we do. Because at the end of the day, if most of our waking hours involve using social media and social media is just a tool, then we might as well use it for good rather than tricking, misleading, or miseducating people. Self-punishment tanks our power. It halts momentum. It diminishes growth. It puts us into a downward spiral when left unseen. Seeing how much the *self-punishment* power leak has cost me has been sobering. Taking responsibility for the way I… 🖤Diminished my own results through comparing myself to another 🖤Criticized my best efforts 🖤Played victim to my own expectations 🖤Numbed my desire because I didn’t feel I deserved it 🖤Used “fantasy goals” as a way to reduce my own results 🖤Talked shit about myself inside my own head all day … and then wondering what *might* have been possible for me had I not allowed my *programmed* punisher part to find fault with my creations… has been a wake-up call. As women we are *sold* the *idea* that if we just work *hard* enough we can “have it all.” Many of us force ourselves into rigid beliefs, spiritual practices, behaviours and “investments” that we convince ourselves are for our “highest good.” Then we attempt to punish our way to success. Believing that with enough “discipline” we’ll have “control” and “get the result” we are desperate to have. This is not power. It’s a trick. A leak. A way the world has profited off the backs of vibrant, creative, radiant women… by misleading them into believing that there is something wrong with them that they must “fix.” Power is not forceful, hard or pushy. True power actually doesn’t require discipline or rigidity at all. It’s soft, open and responsive. It’s awake and aware. Deeply connected to the truth unfolding in the moment. We must nourish ourselves on the road to “having it all.” Not punish, diminish or reduce the effort we have made today – no matter how small it may seem. My greatest spiritual teacher for the past 5 years has been… MY DEBT. The very thing JUST WANTED TO GET RID OF 😅 and hide from the world is theeeeee exact thing that has helped me SPIN A WHOLE LOTTA GOLD. Debt… is what revealed the pockets of stale shame I held in my system. Shame my lineage has held for centuries, so that I could I alchemize it! Debt… is what illuminated my shaky boundaries and the all the places I’d self-abandon for perceived belonging so that I could learn to hold myself and have my own back no matter how intense the pressure. Debt… is what highlighted my pattern of self-punishment and the fear of authority that kept me “working hard” so that I could soften into my power and forgive. Debt… is what taught me to have reverence for my resources. It brought me into deep intimacy with how I was spending my time, money and life force so that I could invest it in quality. Debt… is what allowed me to pursue my path and experience opportunities my ancestors prayed for. Debt… is what blew up my pattern of instant gratification and taught me how to hold my desire and intense sensations for longer periods. Debt… is what deepened my relationship with my husband. This point of contention cleaned up our communication, sharpened our values and solidified us as a team. Debt… snapped me out of acting like a codependent damsel waiting to be rescued and matured me into a woman who takes full responsibility for her choices. Debt… showed me that power is *not* money and that our capability to create resources has nothing to do with our current account balance. Debt… showed me the true price of taking “short cuts” and helped me develop reverence for process, practice and my authentic pace. Debt… taught me how to become a financial player, not a victim, by forcing me to learn the system inside out. It’s been a hard thing to reconcile, that as a marketer (starting out in ‘Big Food’) I’ve unwittingly played a role in fuelling the crises we face today. I remember seeing the packaging of the brands I managed littering the sides of roads and joking with colleagues that ‘we’d made it’ - instead of considering that perhaps I could have paid more attention to what it was packaged in, how consumers could have better disposed of it and how I might have influenced changes operationally that could have benefited the business, the consumer and the environment. A few months back, I shared a post on LinkedIn about how the state of New York is suing PepsiCo for its harmful plastic waste. A peer I deeply respect lamented that what irresponsible consumers do with the packaging once they’ve bought it couldn’t possibly be the fault of the brand. I disagree. I think we can do better than that. What if all brands took responsibility for their waste streams? What if the end of cycle was as important in a product’s design as its pack format, label, branding and marketing campaign? What if organisations were held to a higher standard and were accountable and responsible? That can’t be a bad thing, right?? As marketers, we can have an impact on changing the status quo, by holding ourselves to a higher standard too, and recognising our influence both inside and outside of our organisations. And it has to start with understanding the harms we’re unknowingly (hopefully not knowingly!) causing. I've had some really interesting conversations with some really brilliant people of late.... about the state of the world, the future of business, the struggles faced by people running businesses... all the things. This has me burrowing down a number of mental rabbit holes. The "wake up at 3am with a buzzing brain" kind of rabbit holes. One of them was how as marketers, we tell the stories. Mostly, we share these messages with good intentons based on the information we have from our technical experts (i.e. our clients, our internal technical teams, etc.). We need to tell the right stories and share the right messages - anchored in reality. And if we don't understand it, we need to ask better questions before formulating the messages. Because the potential damage we cause with our mostly well-intentioned messages, but sometimes deliberate smoke and mirrors goes far beyond what we might imagine. So we need to equip ourselves with a solid understanding. To co-opt a favourite saying of one of my favourite marketing educators @campaign_del_mar: we need to know enough to be dangerous (and also, to know enough so we're *not* dangerous). I learnt by reading “Regeneration: Ending the climate crisis in one generation” by Paul Hawken (one of the founders of @ProjectDrawdown) that there are so many natural processes and systems already present, that, if nurtured to do so and coupled with the urgent cessation of fossil fuel usage, can help us reduce the amount of C02 wreaking havoc in our atmosphere. So what’s stopping us? Firstly, thank you for following my new page. I have so much to say but, I know that I’ll eventually get round to telling you all my story and how I’ve got to this point soon 😌 When doing my research this finding from @forth_life recent mental health statistics highlights how important it is right now to connect people with support to manage mental health conditions. ‘1 in 7 adults in the UK in 2024 are currently experiencing poor mental health and a recent survey showed over half of us are stressed at least weekly’ Struggling with my own mental health since the age of 16 I understand what it feels like to keep asking why, why is this happening to me and what does this feeling mean? Especially when you have never experienced it before. Over the years I have been working hard on managing anxiety, stress and physical symptoms that can accompany it and I can confirm it has taken me on a wild journey with highs and lows. Fortunately, recently many more highs and I now have an ever growing team of practitioners, coaches, nutritionists, wellness studios/centres that I call upon to support me. I also graduated in 2022 as a Holistic Health Practitioner with @healingnutrition and it opened my world to how many amazing humans are out there that want to support and share their wisdom and magic with others. I am the type of person that would try and take on my purpose and vision alone, but if I’ve learnt anything over this time it’s that I don’t have to do it alone. I want others to know this too and that they can find help and support easily to live a life that feels good to them whilst managing these difficult feelings and thoughts. Most marketers will tell you to discover the specific language your ideal clients use, so you can use it to be relatable and rate highly on SEO. There’s a good reason this doesn’t work and is not necessary in transformational services. A desire for transformation isn’t rooted in a specific language, it’s rooted in an emotional landscape. If you speak to the emotional situation through the stories you tell and pictures you paint, it will be recognised even if the language is different. In transformational services, more often than not future clients are looking for something different, not the same. Using the same language is just reflecting back to them more of what they are feeling, but they want to feel different. Using your own language, that fits with your energy, is a double-whammy that lets potential clients know whether or not to move in. What you need to know is not the exact words they use but the feelings they have and how they are impacting them.
