Had a lovely time today @cleeve_common at a drop in event with the Butterfly Conservation, Gloucestershire group who were also running activities. It was BRILLIANT to meet some young fellow journalists and many curious minds. Unfortunately, it was a bit windy for the butterflies, but lots more to see including the amazing Bee Orchids (swipe to end) and this wonderful little Bloody Nosed Beetle who hung about and enjoyed exploring some of the pictures made, kindly giving me time to sketch him! Back in the studio now and inspired to continue with my concertina sketch book ahead of #internationanaturejournalweek with Bethan Burton @journalingwithnature who is hosting the event which begins tomorrow!!!! Sheep on the Gelligaer and Merthyr Common on Friday - we drove back from Pontypridd via a meandering route and reviews the sunny weather and gorgeous views. Loved all the sheep and horses up on the common but couldn't believe how much litter was thrown along the verges of the road; it was so sad to see so much rubbish! As you approach the East Yorkshire town of Beverley, depending on direction, you could pass through the pastureland, racecourse and golf course, where, breaking this flat land you will see a tall black tower. The common land where the tower stands was granted to the local people by the Lord of the Manor in 1380 and was used to graze their animals on which is a practice still used today. Westwood Windmill, Barton’s Mill or the Black Mill was rebuilt in 1803 by Gilbert Barton, the original built circa 1650. Due to a large fire the mill had its working gears removed and the lease for it ceased in 1868. Originally there were at least 5 mills here but only 2 now remain, this one being Grade II listed. 5 stories high it now has a crenelated top instead of the original cap holding the sales. You can see from the old photograph that there was a dwelling next to the windmill and cricket was played here. A meeting was held yesterday, May 22nd, for the active volunteers of the five villages of Pandariya block, in which they were briefed on the importance and scope of self-service. They were informed about how they would work for the development of their villages and explained the objectives. They were told that volunteering is an opportunity for young people to work through real challenges and bring meaningful change. Playing with shapes. WIP After an interesting conversation a few weeks ago with @peternencini @helgatepottery about the Beaker People it got me rethinking these fascinating pots. The ‘Beaker Folk’ migrated through Europe and into the UK around 4,500 years ago. The distinctive bell shaped curves define this pottery, often with beautiful, repetitive patterns. They totally resonate, meditative simple marks pushed or scraped into wet clay. I’ve always loved their simple forms and also to be reminded that peoples have been moving around the globe for thousands of years. No body owns the planet, least of all human beings. We find refuge and take shelter, make connections and friendship where we can. Boundaries and maps, nothing but constructs, interesting observations of landscape, and edges offer opportunities for fusion, creativity, community and reinvention. HANKLEY COMMON #58🇬🇧🇮🇪 11 years on from my last visit, the memories may well have faded, but new ones were created on this most special of courses. A James Braid and Harry Colt design, the course itself is laid out over 164 acres, within 850 acres of common land. The sense of scale is with you throughout the round as you get glimpses of the far corners of the course, which appear miles away! This is as good an example of a heathland course you'll find. Surrounded by public common land, you share the fairways with red kites and deer. The routing is phenomenal, and the improvements being undertaken by @mackenzieandebert elevating the course still further. A superb day's golfing was had by all of us. At first I was uncomfortable with the idea of surrendering property to a collective. I was driven more by an intellectual value than an instinctual feeling. But recently that has shifted for me. Something in my imagination has opened a little. I recall a piece of wisdom from Brazilian educator and Indigenous and Land Rights advocate, Vanessa Andreotti. I can’t remember if it was a podcast or a lecture, but in it she talks about the limited horizons of new ideas. So, for example, when we imagine new futures, we cannot imagine beyond a certain horizon point, which is limited by our current standpoint. You have to get to the next horizon to be able to push your imagination further. This wisdom comes to mind as I enter summer two in my Unsettling project. I am in a very different place now. I am past the crisis of restructuring my life, and at a place where I have learned how to navigate this section of the ocean. In this different place I feel like I am seeing something new on the horizon. Something new in the way I see land and personal property. My views of land began emerging last summer when, after putting willow sticks in the grassy sand, much to my shock, some of them sprouted. I thought this only happened in Costa Rica where everything is Very Much Alive–but even here, the neglected grassy sand is full of life! This was confirmation for me that the earth is very much alive. Or as they write on GTDF, “we are an extension of the land-metabolism that is the planet, not the other way around.” I let this sink in, and now I know, I don’t just think, that every act of cultivation is an act of co-creation with this living organism, Earth. At the same time, there is nothing like living alone to confirm my need for connection and to be a conscious part of a collective. In my longing I have stretched my circle to include the other-than-human world, including the trees, and animals I share earth with, as well as Ancestor moon and stars with whom I share a cosmic history, and who guide the cycle of seasons. What is a Common? It seems lots of people have their own thoughts and interpretations. Many are right, but some are not, so for the record... #Common land is owned, in our case, by a private land owner. It does not belong to the people. However, people do have the right to roam here on foot - walking, running, climbing In addition, we allow horse riders to come off the bridleways if they purchase a hacking licence. We also allow some commercial activity such as professional dog walking, with special permission or with the purchase of a licence. We also allow bikes if cyclists stick to the cyclists' code. This lovely oak on our common had to be cut last year after it died. It used to have a swing on it. The surrounding oaks have fewer and smaller leaves each year. Something is eating them and weakening the trees. They will end up like this one in a few years and our common will be empty. On April 13th and 14th, Allianz Foundation Fellow @floramammana organized the „Usi Civici in Festa“, celebrating and reimagining Vallagarina’s collective properties, often at risk of enclosure. The event featured open dialogues, artistic formats, tastings, and music. Additionally, Flora presented the first digital open-source accessible map of collective properties in the Lagarina Valley, created over six months in collaboration with map expert Maurizio Napolitano. 💬 The celebration sparked dialogue on managing these assets in a more eco-friendly manner, rooted in rural life and encompassing forests, meadows, quarries, and more. Collective properties are in Trentino legally inalienable, yet their surface area for civic use has significantly reduced over the past two centuries 💬 Could contemporary valorization of these properties be the stage for regenerative practices that address social and ecological crises? @la.foresta.rovereto, of which Flora is part, aims to reclaim and redefine their management, balancing personal, collective, and planetary well-being. The birdsong was uplifting, we saw hare, deer, buzzards and kites and heard a tawny owl numerous times which seemed odd but discovered this may be a male defending territory or during mating season. And so begins a long day… Laying out the full set of portraits for the Labour of Love exhibition at #dalescountrysidemuseum to start planning where everything might go. This first stage always takes a while, the dance of pairing up pics, and fitting all the other bits that make up the exhibition. Once we get going hopefully it should take shape quite quickly. This is the culmination of 2-year’s work on four upland areas of England - Yorkshire Dales, Lake District, Dartmoor and Shropshire Hills - predominately focusing on the common land. We have met so many inspiring people and learned so much about these special places.
