I’ve always admired this relief and its breaking of the fourth wall, then today I stumbled upon this in ‘Animals in Greek and Roman Religion and Myth’: “A relief from Chrysapha in Laconia, dating from the middle of the sixth century BCE, which shows a divine couple on a throne. Behind the throne, on the left, there is a long snake, while on the right side of the relief, at the bottom, there are two much smaller attendants: the first, a male, is carrying in his hands a cockerel and what seems to be an egg, while the second, a female, is carrying a flower and a pomegranate. Most scholars prefer to interpret the couple on throne as a heroic couple. In my opinion, however, the scene is set in the Underworld (as underlined by the serpent), and the offerings identify the couple as Hades-Persephone. A random list of little and not-so-little things that have helped strengthen my connection with Persephone. As always, YMMV. 🌸 Anointing myself with ritual oil before my daily devotions (which vary in length and intensity, but always consist of meditation, prayer, and a short divination). The oil I use includes sweet honeysuckle, purple roses, violets, pomegranate, dark berries, and currant, with a dash of myrrh, woods, and resins. 🌱 Memorizing the Orphic Hymn and reciting it aloud to her daily. I’m a fan of Patrick Dunn’s translations. Sometimes I use my devotional jewelry like rosary beads and pray in this manner. The most important thing is to imbue it with feeling and passion—“enflame Thyself with prayer,” as a certain occultist put it. Experiment with enunciation and timing, draw out the words to feel the weight behind them. She responds very well to this! 🌸 Learning how to vibrate god-names—a skill I honed from practicing ceremonial magick (which also benefitted from the voice lessons I took as a teen). Vibrating a divine name in the right way brings an immediate shift in consciousness and attunement to that energy. 🌱 Wearing things in her honor (colors associated with her, devotional jewelry, scarves and bandanas, floral print, etc.). 🌸 Having little reminders of the Goddess around the house, e.g. scented candles, works of art, fresh flowers, a sheaf of dried wheat in the kitchen, floral printed bedsheets, pretty textiles or tapestries, soft lighting (I like red), a leafy throw blanket. When I was an architectural student my professors always insisted on "create more for the light and shadow". This basically mean that design was more than it's function, it was about incorporating and giving shape to the ethereal nature of light and shadow. You know that I love to blend architecture and spirituality, and this is an interesting one for me. In this post I didn't show any specific building, but took a more theorical and poetic approach. These past few days have been research and reading days. I'm studying again about chthonic architecture, history of cemeteries and doing my own *traditional* writing blending architecture and death. Yeah... There's papers full of writing and notebooks with information... 😵 If you're a regular you know how this works, I can't help but to gravitate from chthonic architecture to deity work. And if you're new here, I'm sorry if this is a bit weird. 🫣😂 I love these topics a lot and I tend to jump between them. But, today I was thinking about the meanings of shapes, the basic ones, and how they represent something... Especially in death cities. So, I decided to explore each one in the terms of chthonic architecture. I'm also studying about the urbanism of cemeteries and necromancy (and how they find a common point), and got some cool ideas that will share soon. Dis Pater, otherwise known as Rex Infernus or Pluto, is a Roman god of the underworld. Dis was originally associated with fertile agricultural land and mineral wealth, and since those minerals came from underground, he was later equated with the chthonic deities Pluto (Hades) and Orcus. In Greek, #chthonic is a descriptive word for things relating to the underworld and can be used in the context of chthonic gods, chthonic rituals, chthonic cults, and more. This is as compared to the more commonly referred-to Olympic gods and their associated rites and cults. Olympic gods are understood to reference that which exists above the earth, particularly in the sky. Gods that are related to agriculture are also considered to have chthonic associations as planting and growing take place in part under the earth.
