Coast to Coast 2024 has started!! Volunteers came and joined us on Eden on the Bay Beach this morning for a cleanup! As it turned out, Beach was VERY clean!! Mostly just small items and the odd item. We found quite a few nurdles which mom loves to look for!! Was wonderful to have some members of @girl_guides_cape_west_, 1st Bothasig Scouts, @cityofct Solid Waste Department, and our awesome loyal volunteer family!! We were also joined by the city's litter mascot, BINGO!! After a little break (life!), it was great to be back with friends, pals, neighbors, new folks and our community this morning on the Gabrielino Trail—in and around JPL. To our surprise, or not so surprise, there was plenty of trash to be picked up and removed—including SO many pairs of socks. The benefits and value of being in nature, with a community of like minded and rad folks, listening to the Arroyo Seco running, removing garbage from our beloved green spaces—man, this is the healing that I need—we need. This Wednesday, May 29, we teamed up with the 9th Edition of the @iycforyouth to host a Community Volunteer Day in Manhattan Beach, CA! With more than 30 #IYC9 attendees in tow, we began the day with a quick tour of the Tzu Chi USA National HQ in San Dimas, where we introduced Tzu Chi’s missions and how many of our initiatives align with the UN sustainable development goals (or SDGs). The group was then split into three, with the first group visiting the Treasure Hut (where we collect second-hand items like clothing for distribution to those in need), the second group visiting our composting site, and the third group helping pack care supplies for distribution. Then, by bus, together we traveled to Manhattan Beach to begin our coastal cleanup. With the collaboration of the @CityofMB Beach Dune Restoration Project, IYC9 volunteers began cleaning up the shoreline. Tzu Chi USA is a proud partner of the IYC9, founded and led by Ali Mustafa. It's taking place till June 2 both in-person and online and is bringing together more than 8,000 participants globally. Στελέχη του Κέντρου ενημέρωσαν τους μαθητές για τα περιβαλλοντικά προγράμματα και τις προτεραιότητες που έχει θέσει η ΕΕ για το περιβάλλον και την προστασία της φύσης. Οι μικροί μαθητές με τα υλικά που τους χορήγησε ο Δήμος Πειραιά, πλαστικές σακούλες και γάντια, προχώρησαν στον καθαρισμό της Ακτής και στο τέλος συζήτησαν για το είδος των απορριμμάτων που περισυνέλλεξαν, για το αν ήταν ανακυκλώσιμα και ποια είναι τα οφέλη από την ανακύκλωσή. I decided to act with my friends during my stay in Australia. There is very little garbage on the beaches in Australia. In my home beach in Japan, due to the flow of the tide, the sea garbage (plastic, etc.) will flow to the beach in the winter. The reason for the action is simple, I love ocean and it's just comfortable to spend time in the beautiful sea. 2/2 "During my travels, I make it a point to collect trash and raise awareness about keeping our beaches clean. It can be disheartening to see our beautiful beaches littered with waste. My goal is simple: after finishing my ride, I visit a beach at sunset and pick up a bag of trash. In Gokarna, local school kids joined me in collecting trash, which was heartwarming. However, dealing with hazardous waste like medical disposables without proper equipment has been challenging, especially since I travel light and can only carry basic gear like hair color gloves. Throughout my journey, I aim to show that there are more places to explore beyond the popular beach destinations like Goa or Gokarna. I hope my experiences inspire others to take up cycling, even if it's just for 30 minutes a day, to stay mentally and physically fit. Once you start, there's no looking back. Balancing my love for adventure with my commitment to sustainability and environmental responsibility has been a rewarding challenge. I start cycling at sunrise, plan to reach my destination by midday to log in for work, and spend 30 minutes each evening collecting trash. While not everyone may join me, I find fulfillment in my routine. I plan my trips at least a month in advance, using Google Maps and talking to locals for insights. I remain flexible, ready to change plans if something seems off. Safety is always a priority, and so far, I’ve made it back in one piece, relying on optimism and resourcefulness. People's responses to my initiative have been mostly positive, with many curious about my journey and offering support. However, there have been challenges, like encountering wild animals in Konark or dealing with suspicious locals in West Bengal. Good start for this month. I'd like to share some of my experience from today with my team. I had the opportunity to clean a beach littered with trash, broken glasses, and other debris that kill millions of seabirds annually. As with sea turtles, we support and do what we can to help them. So take responsibility and make them happy. ( At least I used the opportunity ) And make it happen.. it was a pleasant day for me to start my day.
