Some old (and rather unseasonal) photos of Rough Castle, the best preserved fort on the Roman frontier that we call the Antonine Wall. As well as a stretch of the Wall's enormous ditch and the earthworks of the fort itself, you can see there the pits that the Romans called 'lilia'. These horrific boobytraps once contained sharpened stakes to catch attackers unaware. Their ancient name comes from their resemblance to the stamen of lily flowers, although they were altogether more deadly! Rough Castle ( #antoninewall), near Falkirk Wheel, Scotland The Antonine Wall was a defensive fortification built by the Romans across what is now the central belt of Scotland, between the Firth of Forth and the Firth of Clyde. It was constructed in the early 2nd century AD, under the rule of Emperor Antoninus Pius, hence its name. The wall was about 60 kilometers (37 miles) long and was intended to mark the northern boundary of the Roman Empire in Britain. If you could see the remaining parts of that wall, it's definitely worth it. Tombstone of Nectovelius, who served in 2nd Cohort of Thracians. The stone was found at Mumrills, the largest fort on the Antonine Wall. The inscription reads: “To the Gods of the Shades. Nectovelius, son of Vindex. Aged 29, of 9 years’ service. Of the Brigantes tribe. Served in the 2nd Cohort of Thracians.” The Brigantes, were a tribe who had controlled much of what would become Northern England, and the stone is evidence of the recruitment of soldiers from native tribes.
