Let’s be real: you can’t change your life 3 months from now if you start 3 months from now. 🙃 Do you know how many meetings I would walk away from thinking, “I wish I had started my own thing sooner. I wonder where it’d be now if I had started earlier?” Not worded like that. There were definitely way more explicit words after sitting in terrible meetings where my only job seemed to be acting as a yes man to someone I no longer even liked. But take a second to be so for real right now: how often have you wondered how different things would be if you had ALREADY started that idea you have? I can tell you this- I knew if I had started, I was already living the worst case scenario that nothing changed at all. But by not starting I had to live with the constant wondering of what could have been and the resentment for not taking control of my own life. We all deserve the best lives we can possibly build for ourselves. But unfortunately, we’re not all trust fund babies or amazing vocalists who randomly got discovered on YouTube before 2010 so we gotta put in a little bit of effort. I know you already know all of this and I’m not giving you groundbreaking information. I'm sure you've been here 👇 You start working with a seemingly perfect client - it's super exciting, you're still buzzing because you managed to bag such a dreamy client, and then you slowly start seeing red flag after red flag 🚩🚩 They cross your boundaries once, to which you say: "oh well, I have to do this because I want to get paid." But then they cross boundary after boundary and it feels like it's far too late to tell them you're uncomfortable, so you start to dread doing work with/for them. My home has different noises these days. Quite often it roars with booming music and teen merriment into the night. And right now this lovely sofa looks a mess as it’s covered in many throws to protect it from life. My daughter’s quite partial to a party. I’m happy to host them, but the teens love climbing from the sofa to the gallery above. I find empty booze bottles, food and puddles of spilled alcohol in the strangest of places and I relish the noise and chaos. The laughing, dancing, the mess, the sleeping overs.. Often I dance and laugh with them, hear their secrets, hug and celebrate them. Full of excitement and promise, they’ll be gone all too soon to figure out who they are and grow, so I’m savouring the chaos. I’m not around on instagram much as health is an issue again. I find acceptance a great medicine among the many other techniques I employ (including dancing and play). I’m sewing a little, but mostly dropping lots of balls, not cleaning the house well enough.. the garden’s wild.. but it’s all fine. Sometimes I tidy and think how lovely it looks.. I enjoy the lovely curves of my sofa, the muffled shadows at night, the changing light on ghostly pieces on the walls. But it’s never tidy for long and its energy is constantly shifting. I like that. The life, the way it’s patiently held us. When we moved here, I knew it was waiting for me, that it was home, but had no idea quite how special this creaky little house was going to be. It had a life of its own - still does. Nesting birds, various insects, the odd lizard or toad passes through. It welcomed us and allowed us to nest here and go through our life cycles as well. For the time being, I’m its guardian and in return it’s mine too. The love in these walls is a beautiful thing. How I felt reading @maryportasofficial talk about alpha culture in Work Like a Woman - a manifesto for change 😆 This book delivered! 👏🏼 It’s a quick and easy read and provides a blueprint for how to work better and create more successful working environments (that are good for business and employees) by embracing female qualities such as empathy and collaboration. Even many men don’t want to work in alpha culture and we lose so much by rewarding these toxic characteristics. I was a convert before but this book articulates it perfectly. Highly recommend ⭐️⭐️⭐️✨
