Wilma Mankiller is honored, not only as the first ever elected chief for the Cherokee Nation, but the first female elected chief among major federally elected tribes across North America. She was inspired by the Indigenous groups which occupied Alcatraz as well as the protests against the Vietnam war, from which she started fundraising for these groups, as an effort to support them. From these efforts she was also inspired to help urban Indians in California by founding the Native American Youth Center in Oakland, as well as getting a job as a social worker for the Urban Indian Resource Center where she would work on projects researching child neglect and abuse, as well as foster and adoption of Native children. Mankiller moved backed to Oklahoma in 1976, where she immediately started volunteering and working for the Cherokee Nation. While completing her bachelor's degree and taking master's courses, she continued her work with her Nation and started to take up public offices as well. She started off as a grant writer and was eventually promoted to director of the Community Development Department of the Cherokee Nation, from which she ran for office as Chief. In 1983, Mankiller was elected as Deputy Chief, and two years later as Principal Chief, and remained chief for the next 10 years, until 1995. After her term ended, she returned to activism, where she gave lectures on Native American studies, Indigenous Health, as well as Women's studies and health. On April 6th, 2010, Mankiller passed away due to pancreatic cancer. She is remembered for her work as an activist, as well as her political career. In 2022, she was one of the first collection of women to be released on the American Women Quarters. #nativeamerican #NativeEducation #Indigenous #NativeNonprofits #BerksCountyPA #NativeBerks #ReadingPA #Widoktadwen #WilmaMankiller #wilmamankiller #americanwomen #americanwomenquarters #indigenouswomen #womenhistory #womenhistorymonth

I learned of Wilma Pearl Mankiller, the first woman to serve as Principal Chief of the Cherokee Nation, and I wanted to do a post on her. I read more about her on the National Women’s History Museum website: Wilma Pearl Mankiller was born in 1945 in Tahlequah, Oklahoma, the capital of both the Cherokee Nation and the United Keetowah Band of Cherokee Indians. “When she was 11, the family moved to San Francisco, California as part of a Bureau of Indian Affairs’ relocation policy, which aimed to move Indians off federally subsidized lands with the promise of jobs in America’s big cities.” “She first developed her own social activism when a dramatic event changed her life. In 1969, a group of American Indians took over the federal penitentiary on Alcatraz Island in San Francisco Bay and laid claim to it by ‘right of discovery’ to expose the suffering of American Indians.” “Forever changed by Alcatraz and inspired by the women’s movement, Mankiller worked to empower the surrounding Native communities in California, serving as director of Oakland’s Native American Youth Center. She believed that restoring pride in Native heritage could reduce the downward spiral of Native youth growing up in the streets.” “Mankiller was elected to serve as the Principal Chief of the Cherokee Nation in 1985. She led for 10 years, guiding a sovereign nation whose population more than doubled, from 68,000 to 170,000, during her tenure. The first woman to be elected chief of a major American Indian tribe, she revitalized the Nation’s tribal government, and advocated relentlessly for improved education, healthcare, and housing services.” “Mankiller received the Presidential Medal of Freedom in 1998 from former president Bill Clinton. She passed away in 2010 and remains an inspiration to many Cherokees and strong women everywhere.” #wilmamankiller #nativeamericanwomen #cherokeeindians #womenshistorymonth2024 #cherokeeindian #nativeamericanlivesmatter #nativeamericansmatter #nativeamericantribes #nativeamericanpeople #nativeamericancultures #nativeamericanheritage #nativeamericanwoman #americanindianhistory #cherokeenation #nativeamericanhistoryisamericanhistory

It calls for collective efforts to break down barriers, promote accessibility, and ensure that women of all abilities have equal opportunities to thrive and contribute to society. Our two figures today are: Wilma Mankiller! Born in 1945 and passing away in 2010, battled a rare muscular dystrophy. As a Cherokee Nation member, she rose to Deputy Chief and later became the first female Principal Chief, serving three terms. Her initiatives, like reviving Sequoyah High School and establishing the Cherokee Nation Community Development Department, significantly boosted Cherokee Nation membership from 55,000 to 196,000. #WilmaMankiller and Bobbie Lea Bennett! Bobbie, a transgender woman with osteogenesis imperfecta, faced many obstacles during her transition. Despite being advised to live as a woman for four years for Medicare coverage, her surgery claims were rejected. In 1978, she mobilized public support through a cross-country journey and protest in Baltimore until her surgery was approved. She then founded the St. Tammany Organization for the Handicapped and hosted “Barbie’s Talk Show” to highlight accessibility issues. #BobbieLeaBennett

🌟 Celebrating Strength and Wisdom this International Women's Day 🌟 This March, as we honor the remarkable women who have paved the way for future generations, we spotlight a beacon of hope and empowerment within our own Cherokee community - Wilma Mankiller, the first female Principal Chief of the Cherokee Nation. Wilma's journey, marked by resilience, compassion, and unyielding dedication, serves as a luminous example for all, especially our young Cherokee girls. Her life teaches us that leadership is not just about holding a position, but about making a positive impact in the lives of others, standing firm in the face of adversity, and holding true to our values and heritage. As we remember her legacy, let's remind ourselves and our daughters that our voices are powerful, our dreams valid, and our potential limitless. Wilma Mankiller showed us that with courage, perseverance, and community, we can overcome any obstacle and lead with grace and strength. To our Cherokee girls: May you walk in Wilma's footsteps, carrying forward the torch of leadership, wisdom, and compassion. Remember, you are the leaders, healers, and changemakers of tomorrow. Let's honor Wilma Mankiller's legacy by being bold, kind, and fiercely proud of who we are. 💫 "We are all in this together; we can all make a difference." - Wilma Mankiller #InternationalWomensDay #WilmaMankiller #CherokeePride #EmpoweringGirls #CherokeeWomenLead #cherokeenation

Wilma Mankiller (1945-2010) was of Cherokee, Dutch, and Irish descent; the name Mankiller derives from the high military rank achieved by a Cherokee ancestor. She grew up on Mankiller Flats, the farm granted to her grandfather as part of a government settlement after the forced relocation of his tribe. After the failure of the farm, the family moved to California. During the 1960s Mankiller studied sociology and got a job as a social worker. In 1969 she became active in the Native American Rights movement. She moved back to Oklahoma to reclaim Mankiller Flats in the mid-1970s and in 1977 took a job as economic stimulus coordinator for the Cherokee Nation. Completing her degree in social science and taking courses in community planning at the University of Arkansas, she initiated a number of projects aimed at greater development of the Cherokee communities in Oklahoma. In 1983 Mankiller won election as deputy principal Cherokee chief, and, when the principal chief became head of the Bureau of Indian Affairs in 1985, Mankiller succeeded him as principal chief. She thereby became the first woman ever to serve as chief of a major Native American tribe. Two years later she was elected chief in her own right. Her victory ushered in an administration that focused on lowering the high unemployment rate and increasing educational opportunities, improving community health care, and developing the economy of northeastern Oklahoma. She emphasized the necessity of retaining certain Cherokee traditions by creating the Institute for Cherokee Literacy. Mankiller was reelected in 1991, but she did not run in 1995. She was inducted into the National Women’s Hall of Fame in 1993, and in 1998 she received the Presidential Medal of Freedom. Her autobiography, Mankiller: A Chief and Her People, was published in 1993.
