It was World Voice Day this week on April 16. And having recently been diagnosed with the voice disorder Spasmodic Dysphonia this takes on a whole new meaning. It’s been a rough couple of weeks with delays in my treatment and the dawning that access to this treatment may not be all that reliable in an ongoing capacity 🥲 This disorder has been heartbreaking for me. The loss still takes me my surprise and I’ve had to turn down some amazing opportunities. HOWEVER, here I am poised for a week of two weddings and two funerals and still being invited by people to share their stories and speak in public. And it just goes to show that we are all so much more than our weaknesses and our perceived limitations. We are the sum of all of our complexities and our parts. And when something is broken it doesn’t mean we are. Margaret has suffered daily from muscle tension dysphonia for five years, but she remains an essential part of the Cardiology Catheter Lab team as its coordinator at Blackpool Teaching Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust in the UK, This role is fast-paced and requires lots of planning ... and talking. She says, “I spend a lot of time speaking to Wards on the phone and they often ask me to repeat what I've just said because they haven't understood or heard what I said. My voice for the most part sounds rough, hoarse, gravelly or raspy and by the end of the day, especially a working day, it is extremely sore and very often I have nothing left at all. Luckily my managers and colleagues support me 100% - they are amazing." While it affects an estimated 10% of the UK population, Margaret's experience is that there is little known about dysphonia in the UK and she is currently receiving treatment in Wythenshawe, having seen speech and language (SLT) specialists closer to home but without finding significant improvement. Reflecting on her journey with dysphonia she says: “I am desperately trying to raise awareness of these problems. It has taken me five years to get this far and to be honest I am not very much further on. It appears that not enough people in this country know enough about this debilitating condition and the other voice conditions. "During my research I discovered Dysphonia International and they have been very supportive and helpful. I join in with the monthly Zoom meetings of the North Carolina group and I've now become a leader for my area in the UK. I would like to start doing podcasts to encourage people to seek help as soon as they have problems or have a support network to contact when they need it." Scott Flanagan debuted four new quilting patterns last year on World Voice Day. This year, he surprised his doctor, Christopher Bingcang, with a quilt using one of these patterns, “Please Repeat.” Scott shared, "This triptych-inspired quilt has a dual meaning. First of all the bargello effect is broken into three parts because SD causes our voices to be choppy and nothing comes out as one word it comes out in pieces and parts. Secondly, because of this choppiness we are constantly asked to repeat what we have said, over, and over, and over. Through it all, Dr. B has walked this journey with me, encouraged me to keep trying, seen me cry out of pure frustration and fear, and listened to my crazy ideas of what I wanted to try.
