Wire Pass to Buckskin Gulch 📎 SAVE for future reference 📍Paria Canyon- Vermillion Cliffs Wilderness area 🥾 3.4 miles easy- moderate 💲Fee is $6 per person. Pay online before you get there because cell service isn't reliable 🚗 To get to the trailhead, you drive 8 miles on a dirt road. Generally, it's doable with a sedan if it hasnt stormed, but I would recommend a 4x4 high clearance vehicle. ⚠️ The trail starts at the same place as the famous Wave hike. You must have a separate permit for the Wave. Do not even attempt to go on the trail for the Wave. They do monitor it and will fine you. ⭐️ Here are the trail details ⬇️ 1️⃣ The first 1.2 miles is flat but has full sun exposure almost the entire way in a sandy wash (see photo 2) 2️⃣ Then you reach the slot canyon and fairly quickly reach a ladder that you need to climb down (see photo 3) 3️⃣ After about .75 miles into the slot (see photo 4), it opens up (see photo 5) to a giant archway alcove ➡️ Tip: There are petroglyphs to the right, near the giant archway alcove thing 4️⃣ This is where the Wire Pass trail connects with Buckskin Gulch. Buckskin Gulch is the longest slot canyon in the world! You must have a permit if you stay in Buckskin overnight. We suggest you just go down one way or the other and come back when you're ready to be done. (See photos 6-9) ❗️Always remember to check the weather forecast. Too much beauty and awesomeness to put into words. After a long 4 months wait, we finally did our North Coyote Buttes (the Wave) hike. Clocked in 11 hours under the full Pink Moon. Very grateful to have got both North and the South Coyote Buttes permits for our minimoon, a rare thing we are told. "A Colorful Escape". To celebrate Earth Day, a little color and a quiet solitary hike through Buckskin Gulch slot canyon was what is needed to regenerate life's batteries. I love how the seeping water along the canyon wall reflected the colors from the sky and the sunlight bouncing off the canyon walls. Slot canyons can get very narrow and scrambling over rock debris can be a challenge. We had several great meals around Kanab — and one bad one. 😳 But the best was dinner at Cordwood, inside @zionmountainranch resort! This farm-to-table spot was pretty magical. We watched the crew run to the greenhouse during dinner service to pick fresh carrots! The interior is rustic and cozy. The food was excellent. (That mushroom soup!) And you get to enjoy views of the ranch, plus cuddles with farm animals on the way in and out! 📍 Kanab Sand Caves (Moqui Caverns) These unusual man-made caves on the cliff sit just off HWY 89 north of Kanab. And yes, you can see the cars passing when the cave, it’s that close 😀 It’s an easy hike, less than a mile round trip, but you have to climb up the cliff face so proper shoes only! There is no marked path, the best approach is from the left hand side along the cliff. According to Rec.gov, this past Tuesday (Jan 30th) was National Plan for a Vacation Day. Who knew? 😆 I’m deep into travel planning for 2024, and for the first time in years- I’m not making plans with “what if I get a permit to The Wave?” in mind. It’s absolutely bananas not to be planning for the possibility of The Wave anymore. Lottery applications for The Wave have a 3-5% chance of being awarded a permit. For over five years, I entered the 4-month Advanced Lottery every month. On my regular trips to Kanab, I would also enter the Daily Lottery whenever I was in the lottery’s geoperimeter. (I can tell you the exact point on Hwy 89 outside of Glendale when you enter the geofence. To enter by the daily 5:59pm deadline, you need to leave SLC for your Kanab trip by 1:40pm at the latest assuming there’s no accidents or traffic congestion.) It was a lot. AND, every one of these entries came with a non-refundable fee. I think I’ve put some NPS staff member’s kid through college at this point. On Christmas Eve 2023, I put in for the Daily Lottery permit (for hiking on 12/26). Instead of the standard rejection email that I could recite by heart, this email’s subject line said “Lottery Results Announcement (Action Required).” WHAT. I think I was in shock when I got it? So… I finally got to hike The Wave 🏜️ And, I can FINALLY plan a year of travels without the constant caveat that, “I might have to cancel this other trip if I find out that I got a permit for The Wave” 🤍 Good luck with your own permits, and Happy National Plan for a Vacation Day! 📸 December 26, 2023 #thewave #thewavearizona #visitkanab #arizonaadventures
