In honor of Pernell Roberts’ upcoming birthday, I chose an episode to feature where his character, Adam, is the central focus. These pics are from the episode “The Ride,” directed by Don McDougall. I noticed this episode includes numerous close-up shots of Pernell, various shots from different angles, and quite a few scenes featuring all four Cartwrights. Trivia - Bob Harris briefly appears in this episode as the falsely accused Sammy Yates. Bob was one of the drivers for the ‘Campbell Corvette Special’ race car, owned by Bill Campbell, and this was one of the initial car sponsorships Dan was involved with. According to conceptcarz.com, in 1962, the car was sponsored by Dan and Pernell. Dan, who had worked in the pits, was the car’s official entrant at the Riverside race on June 24th, 1962. Barbara Hershey photographed by iconic Laurel Canyon photographer Henry Diltz for a profile of the actress in TV Guide magazine in May 1967. At the time Hershey was starring in her first breakout role on TV western “The Monroes” and Diltz was just transitioning from a musician in the band The Modern Folk Quartet to full-time photographer. In the book “Canyon of Dreams” by Harvey Kubernik, Diltz recalls this photo session coming about after magazine writer Jean Pagliuso moved into the house across the street from him in Laurel Canyon that had recently been vacated by folk singer Barry McGuire. “Jean worked at a fashion magazine that had just run a profile on Barbara Hershey. I told Jean I wanted to take Barbara’s photos and she set up a session. The picture was used in TV Guide, which helped both of our careers.” Just a few years later, Hershey would be a huge star and also living in Laurel Canyon, with her then boyfriend actor David Carradine and their baby son Free. These pics are captured from the episode “A Good Night’s Rest.” Ben is utterly exhausted and simply longs for a peaceful night’s sleep, yet he faces various hindrances that disrupt his rest. I found Lorne’s comedic execution in this episode commendable, although my only gripe lies with the supporting characters, who tended to grate on my nerves. And for some reason, I believe Mike enjoyed chasing the other actress with the frog.😅 Trivia - In this episode, a magical coat seems to vanish and reappear! In the beginning, Ben removes his coat while greeting Adam. He then grabs it to take upstairs, only not to have it when he walks past Adam in the next scene. These pics are from an episode I particularly adore, called ‘Bank Run.’ All the Cartwrights display an array of charming expressions throughout. I find it quite amusing when Ben expresses his frustration by slamming his fist down on the Sheriff’s desk upon learning that Hoss and Joe have robbed the bank, which causes him to constantly rub his hand throughout the episode when he tries to use it. Adam, with his impeccable expressions in the background, adds an extra layer of amusement to the scene. In a couple of scenes, Adam can be seen smirking in the background as Ben rubs his hand in pain. As I’ve mentioned in previous posts, I admire Adam’s composed demeanor and casual leaning posture in the background, exuding an air of coolness. He maintains this relaxed stance even while atop his horse as Joe attempts to explain the circumstances leading to the bank robbery to Ben. Trivia, Ian Wolfe, who plays John J Harrison, during World War I, served in the United States Army as a volunteer medical specialist, rising to the rank of sergeant. Fun Fact: TV Western “Bonanza” ran for 14 seasons from 1959 to 1973, making it the second longest-running Western show of all time (just behind “Gunsmoke” which ran for 20 seasons). The show took place on the fictional “Ponderosa Ranch” in the 1860s and starred Dan Blocker as Hoss, Lorne Greene as Ben and Michael Landon as Little Joe. Bonus Fun Fact: The word “Bonanza” was Mexican slang for “prosperity”, but more specifically used by old-timey miners to indicate a rich area of silver ore.

Remembering more of the evening with @louisstlewis & friends: "Rawhides and Rodeo Queens: The Art of the Wild West " @gallerycfineart . I channelled my best memory of Miss Kitty ( Gunsmoke) for this fête! I loved watching Westerns with my dad as a child, even though for a number of years the shows were dubbed in Japanese, Korean, or Cantonese (all with English subtitles, often twisted up into rollicking good dialogues of insanity!), depending upon where we were in Asia. The shows Rawhide, Gunsmoke, The Lone Ranger, Laredo, Wagon Train, and Bonanza ( hilarious in Japanese) were hugely popular and ever present, even in Thailand & Malaysia. I missed all the N. A. Television watching in the fifties, sixties, on in through the seventies that many of my contemporaries enjoyed ( read - lousy at this aspect of trivia), but I sure know my Westerns! It's a personal favorite because it depicts the Cartwrights placing their belief and trust in someone who ends up betraying them. Despite the pain, it doesn't discourage them from continuing to trust and help others in the future. It serves as a poignant reminder not to give up on caring about people, even in the face of betrayal. In this particular episode, there are notable instances of horses displaying skittish behavior, one in particular. During a groundwork session, the palomino horse that Ben is working with rears up, and I'm impressed that Lorne (who we also see subtle giving treats to the horse) maintains character without breaking despite this. In a subsequent scene, the same palomino horse gets startled as Hoss and Joe ride around the barn. Later in the episode, Harry, Charles' character, gets pushed by the same horse in pursuit of a carrot tucked into Harry's back pocket. Additionally, on the streets of Virginia City, another horse (a different horse this time) is spooked, moving sideways and nearly colliding with the two horses pulling the wagon Hoss is on. Michael's mischievous smile is evident as this rider passes by the wagon near him. Trivia - In 1945, Bronson was designated to the 61st Bombardment Squadron, 39th Bombardment Group, stationed in Guam. Serving as a gunner on a B-29 "Superfortress" bomber, he completed 25 missions in the Pacific Theater, participating in sorties over Japan.
