Mit seinem Kumpel Jimmy Delbridge zusammen versuchte er es zunächst als Jimmy & Duane. Ihre Single I Want Some Lovin mit der B-Seite Soda Fountain GIrl blieb 1955 aber erfolglos. Duane Eddy erfand in den Jahren danach seinen eigenen Gitarrensound, der schnell Twang genannt wurde. Erstmals in die Charts schaffte er es 1958 nach diversen Absagen von Labels, die seiner Musik keine Chance auf Popularität einräumten. Er brachte die Single Moovin' n' Groovin' heraus, die es in den USA in die Charts schaffte. Kurz später folgte sein erster Hit mit Rebel Rouser, der in den USA auf Platz 6 stieg. Die folgenden Jahre wurden seine erfolgreichsten. Er wurde als Instrumentalmusiker ein Star in den USA und in UK, was nahezu einer Sensation glich. Ohne Gesang war es in der populären Musik kaum denkbar, großen Erfolg zu erzielen. Seine Musik wurde in Filmen eingesetzt und an den Autoscootern, ein wichtiger Treffpunkt für die Jugend zu der Zeit. Es folgten Hits wie Peter Gunn, Forty Miles Of Bad Road, Because They're Young oder Pepe. In UK hatte er sechs Stücke in der Top 10. (Dance With The) Guitar Man war 1962 sein letzter großer Hit. I heard of Duane Eddy’s Passing this week and wanted to express my heartfelt condolences to his family and fans of this revolutionary troubadour. His pioneer legacy in Rock’n Roll is exemplary. I have countless memories that come back to me, When I was growing up and still to this day, remembering the incredible unique sound that came out of his Gretsch Guitar! “Rebel Rouser” “Dance with the Guitar Man”, His unmistakable style is unmatched, has never been duplicated, nor will it ever be in this lifetime, he was a legendary figure in the industry and on a personal note, it was not only an honor and pleasure meeting him when I broke into the business, getting to know this iconic talent was inspirational, growing up listening to him and then having him talk to me, telling me it was good to see me, talking about music and styles was surreal and remarkable! About 14 years ago, when we first opened our doors to the public, we had the pleasure of meeting and befriending the legendary Duane Eddy, who at the time was looking to sell a beautiful 1957 Gibson F-5 Mandolin. Mr. Eddy purchased it brand new from the infamous Ziggie’s Music in Phoenix, Arizona, in 1958 (the same place he bought his first 1957 Chet Atkins Gretsch 6120), and kept it around his house for the countless impromptu jams that would inevitably happen when his musical friends would stop by. Even though Mr. Eddy wasn’t known for playing the mandolin, we still found a buyer for it in less than two weeks, and off it went to its new home somewhere in the Carolinas. We’ll never forget Mr. Eddy, and to this day are still honored to have had the pleasure of helping him sell his beloved mandolin. It was very sad to hear of his death this morning, and we offer our sincere condolences to his lovely wife, Deed, his four children, and all of his family and friends. Eddy was a pioneer, and his humble nature will be sorely missed. May he finally rest in peace, and enjoy his place among the many legends that went before him. He was an inspiration to many, including everyone here at BVG. So sad to see him go. A great gentleman, was always so nice to hang and play with. I first met @duaneeddyofficial when he came and played with us on Late Night with David Letterman in the mid 80’s and we remained friends ever since. His incredibly long career stretched back to the 1950s, boasting classic songs characterized by his distinctive “twang.” Perhaps his most famous work? “Peter Gunn” (1959), his take on the theme song from the TV show (1958-1961). I feel like the song is well-known (if not by name) to a huge number of people, while the series is quite obscure now.
