A pair of turquoise-browed motmots, birds native to Central America's tropical regions. Known for their vivid turquoise eyebrows and long, racquet-tipped tail feathers, they are sometimes called "Clock birds" in other regions as well as "foolish birds" because they are not as skittish as most birds. They are monogamous and mate for life ❤️ Unlike other bird species where only the males have elegant colorful feathers, both males and females have this and they wag their tales to indicate to predators that they see them and that they will evade capture if they try. We were lucky to see this pair of beautiful motmots in the Muyil forest. Here's one more shot of a Turquoise-browed Motmot. This will also be my last photo from Mexico! Toward the end of my trip, I spotted this motmot perched in a cenote. (A cenote is a natural pit, or sinkhole, resulting when a collapse of limestone bedrock exposes groundwater.) Of course, it flew away when I first noticed it, but I waited to see if it would return to the perch. Luckily, it did! Lifer alert! Turquoise-browed Motmot. 🇨🇷 When I saw this bird, all I could say was BEAUTIFUL! 1st interaction with the bird, the photo wasn't great at all. I was actually making a youtube video, and it was the 1st bird we saw. Later, as we were finishing up, we saw it again. The composition still wasn't that great, but it was better than the 1st encounter. Then it flew to this perch, but the challenge was the sun! The sun would shine on the Motmot off and on, creating hot spots. As you can see, the sun was shining on the branch but at that moment it wasn't shining on the Motmot, which made me happy! All I kept thinking was, "Please don't do this to me, sun!" Let me get this composition without bright spots on the bird! Let me be great! Please! The turquoise-browed motmot is smaller and has more color variety in its plumage than the Lesson’s motmot. Daily visits from this Turquoise-browed Motmot at our accommodations in Costa Rica was a special treat and even though it is missing its trademark tail “rackets”, the colour palette still makes this bird a stunner.

Momoto Ceja Turquesa/Turquoise-browed Motmot (Eumomota superciliosa)! We spotted this absolutely stunning bird near some cenotes/xenotes meaning “sacred well” (water filled sink holes/limestone bedrock caves, sacred to Mayan Peoples) just south of Puerto Morelos, Mexico last week. This beauty has an incredibly unique tail and moves it like a swinging pendulum of a clock. We were so happy and fortunate to have gotten to see one! There are 14 extant species of Motmots. This one, Turquoise-Browed Motmot, is found from southern Mexico to northwestern Costa Rica. It is the national bird of both El Salvador and Nicaragua. Unfortunately, they don’t seem to have impressed Costa Ricans as much! There, it is sometimes called as Pájaro Bobo or Foolish Bird, owing to its tendency to allow humans to come very close without flying away.
