7 years ago today I walked out Gaston county jail. Today, I was in town speaking to the Senior class at a local high school. So many memories over the years I spent in this town. If you had told me I would ever be grateful for my short time away, I would have laughed. The truth is, jail was easy. It was the time with myself and my thoughts that was difficult. That time gave me the opportunity to get honest with God and myself, to prepare me for some much needed changes up ahead. I would run for a few more weeks trying to drown myself with the bottle, but I couldn’t outrun God’s grace, His will or His love. God’s provision is an incredible thing to experience. I’m grateful today for a life I never imagined. Don’t sale yourself short making plans. His are always better anyway. Trust Him. All the decisions I’ve made this far have lead me right here. Recollection is a gift. Learn from your past and build a strong foundation for the future. I’m still breathing. God’s not done. There is hope. I feel like I have to make an obligatory post celebrating an accomplishment. What’s the accomplishments you may ask. For 8 years I have been doing what I should have been doing my whole life. This year feels different, maybe I’m different. I’m usually proud and happy… I am tired of being the one in the group that struggles, I’m tired of feeling sad sometimes and I am tired of being just human. I’m not where I want to be, I’m not as healed as I had hoped, I make huge mistakes and horrible choices. I’m sitting in hard consequences right now and nothing feels comfortable. This post isn’t comfortable. But I can’t pretend recovery is all 💐 and ☀️. My life isn’t all horrible and I’ve trained myself to do what I did in the beginning when life gets hard. So cheers 🥂 to 8 years with no beers… or anything else. If I did anything right this year, it’s that I didn’t drink or get high. “I was not too well at the time, and was plagued by waves of self-pity and resentment. This sometimes nearly drove me back to drink, but I soon found that when all other measures failed, work with another alcoholic would save the day. Many times I have gone to my old hospital in despair. On talking to a man there, I would be amazingly lifted up and set on my feet. 17. This time last year I was seven weeks away from giving birth (I didn’t know it, he was early) & finally telling people I was pregnant. Some hadn’t noticed, my clothes are usually black and baggy. Some thought I was putting on a few pounds & didn’t want to say anything. But most were surprised. As was I. If you’re a friend, you know the story. I had my miracle beautiful child to join my miracle beautiful dog. I truly believe this wouldn’t have happened if I wasn’t “clean and serene”. It’s been 17 years now. I don’t know if it will be forever. It’s a challenge. I’d like to avoid my feelings hourly. And this single parenting, sleep deprivation &working thing is more challenging than I ever realised. The exhaustion & toll on my mental and physical health is insane. I had no idea. None. But. Because I have a community around me, many of whom have shown up for me by holding my child as I nap in the day, walking my dog while I hold my child, or walk my kid, or bring me food, or send me food gift cards, or watch my child so I can go out, do laundry, or go to the dentist, the doctor, or they came with me to doctor’s, or got me a massage, or got items on my shower list. It takes more than a village. It takes a community. Because I try hard to stay present, of service & focused, I’ve stayed clean & it hasn’t been easy. I’ve watched friends disappear, I’ve had my sanity tested by world events, I’ve had my heart broken by people who say words but have no concept of dialogue, who have opinions but no concept of context or who have said things to me that were thoughtless. I get to be a mother now. So challenging. So selfless and I’m so selfish. I didn’t know. But, again, I have my communities and even if I slip off the ol’ wagon, I know where to go for a seat and some love. That wasn’t (& isn’t) always the case. But I strive to show up for my special little family & all those around me who’ve trudged with me over the years & kept me going. Thank you. #odat #trudge

Oh manischewitz!!! It’s 5 degrees and the wind 💨 is crankin! Because she 🐶 motivates me and all feels better when I move (especially on crappy feeling days). We moved. We didn’t go far, and we moved! 💚 If you struggle on days that are difficult 😞 to move forward! 💚There is this incredible thing that happens when we move our bodies and I’ll tell you, when human obstacles appear it’s HARD! This helps me to remember to take that first step… 1️⃣Follow and hang with those that inspire and uplift you. They are the ones trudging through ALL things embracing an attitude of gratitude 🙏. 2️⃣Pray (ask for directions and where to be useful) & sit in meditation. That’s the ‘be still and listen. Again when the going gets tough DO IT Anyways! 3️⃣This is the hardest one for me. Practice grace for yourself (myself is often tough) and others. What helps you to keep going when it feels like a struggle?
