We bought our spring flowers a few weeks ago and these are on the front porch. None of the flowers had bloomed yet but we could see a hint of color at the edge of the buds. I thought the white was plain white, so imagine my delight when it bloomed with a touch of purpley-pink! (Now watch as I tie this to writing!) Sometimes we’re faced with a decision when we don’t have all the information. Your gut might push you in one direction, but you really have no way of knowing how it will turn out. Will the tangent your characters taking you on be a dud, or will it be the turning point your story needs? We can’t know—we just have to trust our instincts. Worse case, you end up with a yellow flower. I fortunately grew up with a feminist Mama who wasn't religious and didn't impose any ideologies upon her children. She led by example and insisted we determine our own belief system. One day, I asked her, "What do you believe in?" Because at the time, I was still under the Bible-belt, Midwestern cultural and societal impression that we had to BELIEVE in something rather than WONDER; That we had to label ourselves and others to properly fit in (or not). My Mama replied, "Be good. And do good." We went on to have a handful of conversations over the years about Heaven, Hell, and everything in between. The most important and transformative takeaway for me, though, was that being a good person and doing good things was a way of life, a sort of North Star that ultimately shapes our beliefs and wonders. For me, that has evolved over the years, but its fundamental message remains: It doesn't matter what you believe in or wonder as long as you're a good person and you go out in the world and act accordingly. Here's a fun throwback photo from this date in 2016, circa when I'd often host panels/mini-seminars based on information and advice from my book WRITE OR WRONG: A WRITER'S GUIDE TO CREATING COMICS. Back when I attended conventions as a fan/aspiring creator I would always take the time to attend these types of panels to glean and learn any information I could about "breaking in," and when I started creating comics I appreciated and valued the opportunity to "pay it forward" in this same fashion. With the new WRITE OR WRONG: A WRITER'S GUIDE TO CREATING COMICS [2nd Edition] now available via Amazon, Barnes and Noble, and anywhere else else books are sold from publisher @sourcepointpress, reminders like this prompt me to consider doing more such panels again in the future. Despite usually having pretty strong attendance at them (as seen here), I phased myself out of doing them largely because I felt I had saturated the scene pretty thouroughly with these types of panels over the period of a few years. It remains important (to me, at least) to pay it forward, though... so we'll see. Either way, it's humbling to be reminded that when I was doing events like this how I would pack a room to the point where it was almost standing room only... and I still tear-up a bit every time a creator brings me a comic they've created based on attending one of my panels or after reading WRITE OR WRONG. Many students that haven’t built automaticity in letter writing struggle with the writing process.✏️ Once students know how to print letters with automaticity, this frees up cognitive space 🧠 for idea generation, spelling and more. Do you do handwriting (printing) practice ✍️in your early primary classroom?
When asked several years ago by 1st grade teachers, “How much do you expect students coming up to 2nd grade to write?” My answer was always: ONE well-crafted sentence. ✏️ When I present writing workshops I still say the same thing. Many teachers are surprised because they know the importance I put on writing. Only one sentence? Some teachers are just plain relieved. 😅 Good writing ✍️ in primary is not about quantity. It’s about quality. We need to set the foundation for future writing development. For years we promoted “Just get your ideas down. We’ll fix the spelling later.” I know I did that for years. One reason for this was we were trying to help students express themselves before they forgot what they were going to write. Another reason was to help students who struggled coming up with ideas. We know better now and it starts with being able to write a proper sentence. 📝
Does this count as writing? I sometimes feel like I’ve already said things in every way imaginable so I’m always looking for new descriptions. WRITING EXPECTATIONS: We follow The Write Stuff for writing, and yesterday, we started our new narrative unit using the @disney short ‘Paperman’. Flick through to see a range of writing from working towards writers, to expected writing and a greater depth writer! We were looking at using a range of time adverbials, adjectives and complex sentences. • Each lesson comprises of 3 ‘chunks’. It's funny how the best ideas come to me when I'm not at my computer. It's usually when I'm in the middle of a set at the gym or grocery shopping. The following is a visual representation of the voice in my head reciting lines of dialogue for a particular scene I'm currently writing. That Knock! Knock! Knock! of words and imagery entering my consciousnesses or, at the very least, trying to as I conduct other 'business.' REMINDER: If there is anyone in your life who says "Don't write" or "give it up" or "you can't do it" .... KICK THEM TO THE CURB. Writing is a hard gig. We put it all on the line. Time and time again. Writers deserve support from everyone around them - friends, family, neighbours, the whole nine yards. Not all people understand what writers go through, and you certainly can't expect them to. BUT ... how hard is it to provide words of encouragement? ANSWER: IT ISN'T HARD AT ALL. If the people around you can't care enough about you to provide kind words and encouragement about your writing, think twice about having them in your life at all. Y You deserve all the support and encouragement in the world. Surround yourself with people who give you that unconditionally. This stuff is non-negotiable. Now... go and create beautiful things!
