The words we say matter. In our family, we try to keep it simple. Is it TRUE, HELPFUL and KIND? Then maybe it’s worth saying. If not, it’s not. And if we wouldn’t be unkind to others, why do we find it so easy to be unkind to ourselves? From my experience, we tend to think being harsh with ourselves will motivate us to change, but the opposite is actually true. When we find more compassion for ourselves, we ALWAYS have better, longer-lasting results. So what words or phrases are you telling yourself lately? "It it what it is." Do you ever get tired of hearing people gloss over what shouldn't be with this careless saying? I admit that I do, even though I've been guilty of saying it myself upon occasion. It's used sometimes to gloss over things that could have been different if everyone had done their part or tried harder or actually participated at all. It's used to excuse things that could be changed, but the person isn't interested in doing what it takes to make the change. It's used to gloss over things that we actually can't change, and to minimize them, as if somehow the things that should not be are endurable, or even ok, just because they happened. Because we supposedly can't change it, therefore we're meant to believe that it doesn't matter and the situation must just be accepted. In some situations, what is could even be changed, if someone cared enough to try, but this fatalist thinking just lets it be because it is. Empty words. They're easy to rattle off, but in truth, they don't change what should not be, and they offer little to no comfort to those who are suffering or struggling because of it. Being an adoptee is complicated. Yup, I said it! I was so excited to watch season 2 of Sweet Magnolias on @netflix and then I forgot there was an adoptee storyline on season 1 🤦🏻♀️ So many things resonated however tonight hit home, mostly because I never really sat there and really thought about my own intentions of my adoption journey. Isaac was asked, Why do you want to know? And this was his response(skipped a little, but go watch it): “I had a great childhood… i am who i am not because of dna but because of their values. because of their love. … i dont need to know why i just want to know who whose eyes are staring back at me every single time i look in the mirror.” Sometimes its hard to explain our whys and our journeys but tonight it was like he took the words out of me and spoke them.

What if we REALLY paid attention to what we told our kids? What if we thought more about how our words impact them? Talon handed me a ‘cup of coffee’ and instead of the usual, “oh thanks buddy!” I decided to say, “Oh wow, thank you so much for being such an amazing friend and serving me this amazing cup of coffee.” Before I had kids, I would have thought that was dumb, but seeing how they soak up every single word you say, I now see how impactful I can truly be with my words. Praying through so much right now, but I am excited for how the Lord is opening up my vocabulary to be obedient to Him and serve my son to the best of my ability. Biggest takeaway from this week thus far: The things we say about ourselves matter the most. I caught myself today saying once again, “I’m unemployed.” Hmmmm..... I guess technically I am as far as traditional work goes. I am very much looking for a job, a new career path, and all of that jazz. But..... I am coaching 6+ classes a week, personal training via zoom, and running a virtual group fitness accountability group. I am full on studying for a new nutrition certification and I am an active Les Mills Tap team member. So today I was stopped in my tracks and realized that constantly saying I’m unemployed is a scarcity mindset in full swing. Flipping the switch and saying “I am juggling a bunch of cool side gigs while masterminding my new career path” is a whole lot more abundant and positive. Imagine if we did this with our fitness and wellness? Rather than constantly uttering those nasty words like “I need to lose weight...burn fat” or “I’m so out of shape.” What if we flipped the dialogue on its head and said “I am taking massive action daily towards the fitness and shape I desire.” Hmmmm...... Just like the old saying goes “We are what we eat.” I believe we are what we say about ourselves! I was listening to a podcast the other day about positivity and the words we say to ourselves… thanks Levi Lusco. If we breath doubt and fear and regret to ourselves, then those feelings will be the overflow of our hearts. We can’t help but shower negativity on the people around us when it’s happening inside. It got me thinking how critical I can be internally, and that the criticism is bound to spill over on the people I love most. Especially my teenagers. Because you know… There’s a lot to correct and point out and guide them in right now. It’s hard to bite my tongue. Hard not to get angry over their stuff all over the house. And why is it so difficult to turn off the bathroom light? The one thing they need to hear is “I am loved, I am accepted, no matter what I might do.” Funny… That’s what I need to hear too. So I’m finding small ways to build up instead of set straight. To put courage into them, not strip it away. To focus more on who they are, not what they do. Now don’t get me wrong… There’s rules and consequences in our house... there has to be. This is my dad. He's kind of a hero to me right now. He has vascular dementia that is advancing quite rapidly. It makes him sad sometimes and he gets frustrated and upset, but he still reminds me regularly that he's had a good life. Recently he temporarily lost his ability to communicate. The words I spoke didn't make sense to him, and he couldn't get the right words to come out of his own mouth. It was a profound reminder to me to do my best to ensure that the words I say are coated with kindness and filled with love. DONT LAUGH!!!! 🙈🙈🙈 ⠀⠀ So a lot of people don’t know that my mom took me to a modeling and grooming school. Over the years she noticed that I was changing my posture n she would constantly tell me to walk n sit upright 🤣🤣 ⠀⠀ ☀️ It was actually because I was being bullied in school. I was always the tallest in my class for a long time, taller than some boys even. So they started calling me names and it really affected my self esteem and I started slouching a lot. I couldn’t really stand up for myself at the time I just left them to laugh at me n even draw pictures of me on the board! ⠀⠀ ☀️ At modeling school I had girls my age who looked like me and that was a boost of confidence because I didn’t have to feel awkward all the time. ⠀⠀ ☀️ In that photo I was receiving my certificate. I had finished the course and afterwards I would have moved on to the postgrad class which would see me competing in some of the biggest modeling contests like Face of Africa and even get booked professionally as a model. I chose not to do that because I didn’t think it really was for me. I saw how intense the modeling industry was and at the time felt I wasn’t ready for all that. ⠀⠀ ☀️ So there you have it! As I walked out of their bedroom last night, I said "Goodnight girls". It was intentional; I wanted to push back, I wanted to test the waters, I wanted to harken back to a time when I had two daughters. I knew I shouldn't have as soon as I shut the door. I thought about it all night; did that make her sad? Does she think I don't know her? In the morning, I pulled her aside and asked her how she felt when I said "Goodnight girls". She said happy.
