Gann’s bestseller, lived up to its title in CinemaScope and starring John Wayne. A star studded, airborne cast featuring Claire Trevor, Laraine Day, Robert Stack, Jan Sterling, Phil Harris, and Robert Newton, tells the various stories of its passengers, the pilots and crew as they face certain disaster between Honolulu and San Francisco with 17 passengers and a crew of 5. Coproduced by Wayne, he insisted on CinemaScope which veteran director William A. Wellman didn’t enjoy, but was perfect for this big story. My next John Wayne recommendation is a drama/adventure-thriller released in 1954. The High and the Mighty was directed by William A. Wellman (Wings) and adapted by Ernest K. Gann (Twilight for the Gods) from his novel of the same name. Featuring an ensemble cast of characters, Wayne is joined by a number of memorable leading roles that includes Robert Stack (Unsolved Mysteries), Doe Avedon (The Boss), Phil Harris (The Jungle Book), Jan Sterling (Ace in the Hole), and Paul Fix (Night of the Lepus). On a flight from Honolulu to San Francisco, 17 passengers and a crew of five are unexpectedly thrust into danger when one of their engines is damaged. As they continue on, unsure if they'll reach their destination, they begin to reassess their lives as nerves fail and secrets are revealed. The High and the Mighty is a good example of how someone can be the star of a film, without having the most screentime. I'd have to time each scene to be sure, but I'm pretty certain Wayne isn't seen significantly more than any other role. Yet he is the film's hero, mainly due to two particular scenes, and having his character arc emphasized throughout the story. The film is heavily reliant upon its cast telling a great story. And this they do very well. Every actor featured delivers and at no time are you left feeling the movie is dragging. Their personal dramas are all engaging and their reactions to one another authentic. 3/5

John Qualen was a character actor who worked on Broadway, gaining his big break in the production of Street Scene. In 1931, Qualen reprised his role in Street Scene on the big screen. He worked closely with director John Ford for 35 years. His first film with Ford was in Arrowsmith (1931). Qualen also appeared in The Searchers, Two Rode Together, The Man Who Shot Liberty Valance, and Cheyenne Autumn. One of his best known roles was easily in John Ford’s 1940 classic, The Grapes of Wrath. John Qualen’s performance as a farmer named Muley, who recounts the destruction of his farm, reportedly brought Ford to tears. A few of his other memorable roles were in films like His Girl Friday, Casablanca, and The High and the Mighty. Another interesting thing about Qualen was that he was a trained flautist.
