#mangetout Things are starting to sprout and grow everywhere. We are officially starting to sell some produce next month….we’ll be starting slow and small but everything is coming along beautifully. The mange-tout are so sweet and juicy….i’m not sure we will be harvesting many as I may be picking them to eat every time I walk by! Getting this far has been a labour of love (maybe a little more like blood, sweat and tears) and we are not “there” yet - so much more to do….but each tiny incremental step has led to here….and I’m ok with that. Am I allowed to say that I’ve never tasted food as good as ours….? Salmon Benedict was so delicious. The best part was a new version I so enjoyed. I have been thinking about it ever since. The flavors were so good together. I presented the pouched egg white on the side with roasted tomatoes.Then Salmon was cooked in a parchment pouch with herbs and lemon oil. It’s Mother’s Day weekend at the @gilbertmarket, and the market is packed with all sorts of goodness. Here’s what I picked up: Hot salsa from @los_amayas_salsa, a vendor new to the market this weekend. This salsa is made with chiletepin peppers, which are very tasty if you haven’t had them before. I tried the salsa on its own and on a chip, and it has great flavor and a nice kick. Give it a try! Heads up: The vendor also sells chips. Chicken eggs, kale and zucchini from @rogue_rhino. It’s been awhile since I’ve had farm-fresh eggs, and I’ve missed them so much. Add in the nutrient-dense produce, and I’m very happy with my purchases. I love supporting our local farmers and highly recommend Rogue Rhino for your produce needs. Zaatar from @babasblends. I bought some of this seasoning blend a few weeks back and have been going through it so fast because it’s so good. You can use it in many ways, but one of my favorites is to get high-quality pita bread, brush it with olive oil and cover it in zaatar, then heat it in an oven. Amazing. Mexican cornbread sopes from @bennyblancotortillas. Have you had Christopher’s sopes? If not, I weep for you. These sopes feature sharp cheddar and Hatch green chiles. Slather them with butter, heat them in a hot skillet and eat plain or top with your favorite things. You won’t be disappointed. Shrimp Veracruz tamales from @thetamalestore. I’m a huge fan of The Tamale Store’s generously sized, delicious tamales, which come in all sorts of flavors, but I’ve never had any with shrimp. I’m beyond excited to try these. I may even share them with the other shrimp fan at the house. Maybe.

Our food is the same way. It isn't meant to travel thousands of miles just to reach our tables! When you support local farmers, your food has (generally) been picked the day of or the day prior. It is MUCH fresher & has a higher nutritional value! When crops travel long distances, they go through different processes to prevent spoiling, slow down ripening, or speed it up. These different processes affect the flavor and texture of the produce, which makes it lack flavor. More nutrients = more flavor. 𝐒𝐮𝐩𝐩𝐨𝐫𝐭𝐬 𝐋𝐨𝐜𝐚𝐥 𝐄𝐜𝐨𝐧𝐨𝐦𝐲: Just like supporting other local businesses, local farms give more back to the local economy. When you purchase food from local farms, the money stays in your community and creates more jobs for local people. This also helps you to know your farmers! Additionally, when you buy produce that's grown locally and in season, you're helping to reduce the carbon footprint of your food.
