This superstar @michelenevgend finished her first ultra triathlon this past weekend at the Sun City Ultra. Results: 6th women, 3rd age category, time 05:36. We have been on a coaching process since January, and these results highlight two important factors to success in triathlon: 1. Structure, planning, and processes are necessary. We built a training plan specifically for Michelene’s needs, particularly her recovery from a nagging knee injury. 2. Commitment, consistency, and self-motivation. Without these, no program any coach gives you will be successful. Michelene has been iconic in all these attributes. We are proud of you. Sun City Sprint Ultra 2023 🌞 I went into it without being able to train 2 weeks prior to the competition as I was sick. The night before I still had some phlegm on the chest, questioning whether I should participate or not. Well... How can you rock up at an event like ultra and not compete. Not at all what I had expected… the best feeling to swim alongside my hubby all the way and come into T1 together, a hard bike with a puncture 70km in was a bitter pill to swallow. Thank you to @matthew.j.brittain.50 for helping me get back on the road! #medalmonday What I learned from my first longish triathlon. 1. If you are motivated by people cheering you on, having people to chat to around you, then triathlon is not for you. In the water you hardly hear anything and definitely no chit chatting, on the bike drafting is illegal, maybe on the run you may find yourself running alongside someone. 2. Mental strength is gold the pain comes at all angels. Time on the saddle is key. 3. At any one point in time you have a different goal in mind. Get out the water, cycle and hope to get no puncture or mechanical problems, run your two to three laps. 4. Unless you are a pro It’s your own race against the course. People get out the water first and finish the race after you for various reasons so a slow swim is not the end of your race. 5. Previous running experience is definitely a good thing, that shuffle we do on hills, the 300/400m sprints, they train your legs to keep going. That mantra at comrades “keep moving”, yeah it will come in handy 🤞🏾. Side note, the preacher on Sabbath morning reminded us this very thing, “keep moving”, an ultra marathoner himself, so fitting for me. 6. There’s nothing compared to that red carpet and hearing the guy call your name from 100 meters away. I wonder how he sees that far 🤔. Anywho, you cross the finish line alone, like a pro! Priceless 👌🏾 7.
