#boyfromravoproject ✨ I have always enjoyed movies, and when writing #middlegradefiction my brain readily turns to favorite moments in films I watched as a kid (in addition to books of course). When I was creating the characters for this story, I was taking characters I’d originally written for an adult fantasy and making them children. It was a little difficult at first, my two MC’s were very much adults when they wandered into my mind. On one hand, I had a fairly good idea who they would be, but I wanted to round them out a little more and turned to characters I love that I felt would compliment the adult characters I’d already formed. These are a few examples of those inspirations. I must note — I do not love Belletrix Lestrange 😅 She’s cruel and horrifying and I turned to her for help on creating a villain. When I think of a character who I DESPERATELY wanted defeated…she’s top tier. Here are some of the cast members in my book: Bohdan = Wart meets Richard Tyler Silver = Mary Lennox meets Eilonwy Fedir = Atreyu meets Taran The Collector = Bellatrix Lestrange meets Captain Barbosa Abelard = Merlin meets Theoden Bastian = Huck Finn meets Brand Aunt Irenie = Great, great grandmother Irene meets Yoda I didn’t strictly base my characters off these but when I think of who my cast reminds me of, this is where my brain goes! Do you have rituals to inspire creativity? Many of you will not be surprised to hear story playlists, Pinterest boards, & time in nature are a big part of my creative process, but my rituals before sitting down also play a big role—especially in the morning. The first thing I do is let the pups out back while I fill up my water & make my coffee. Then I get situated on the couch—laptop next to me—& put on some YouTube nature sounds (I don’t actually listen to story playlists in the morning). I spend a little time meditating, which includes speaking affirmations & manifesting dreams (I don’t care what anyone says, that s*** works, y’all). & finally, I open my laptop & get to work. For those wondering how long my ritual takes, it depends on my mood & time constraints. Opening the cabin for the season isn’t as easy as flipping a switch, but it’s worth it when I can sit down to this view with my laptop and get back to writing stories. My trusty sidekick keeps me company and a favorite tree welcomes us. Once the leaves fill in, we won’t see as much of the lake. Ice storms damaged the tree over the winter, but she’s resilient. I had a fascinating chat with someone on Facebook today diving into leadership principles. They made an intriguing point that these principles remain fairly consistent across the board; it's the individual's training, knowledge, and experience that breathe life into them. I resonated with much of what they said, so I asked: "Do you think leadership principles can only be learned through formal education, exposure to great leaders, books, or other media?" They concurred but circled back to the idea that without real-world experience, these principles stay as mere theory. This sparked a deeper convo about applying these principles in everyday life, whether you're in a formal leadership role or not. So, to cut to the chase, I want to explore their point further by uncovering leadership and life lessons in remarkable stories beyond real-life scenarios, mostly from fictional narratives and the like. Years ago, when I was a writer in residence at Hedgebrook, a sanctuary for female writers nestled on Whidbey Island, I wrote my debut nonfiction book, ‘Note to Self: A Seven-Step Path to Gratitude and Growth.’ . . One day, I saw a figure in the distance. His silhouette, framed against the verdant backdrop, was marked by the steady rhythm of a wheelbarrow he pushed with purpose. The lines etched upon his face, and the subtle hitch in his step painted the portrait of a gardener—or perhaps, as my imagination would have it, a soldier who returned from the war in Afghanistan. . . This image, etched into my memory, would later inspire Sean “Mick” McPherson, the protagonist in my crime thriller series. Mick, too, has a limp, though the origins are different from the narrative I had initially thought. We’re talking about how we found our stories today! I’ve mentioned before that the idea originally came to me from yelling obscenities at the tv while playing the Borderlands games. Rain is extremely loosely based off of Lilith, played by Cate Blanchett in the upcoming movie. Damon is also very loosely based on the shirtless guy, played by Big McLargeHuge or something. 🌷 April Wrap-Up 🌷 Does anyone else feel like April got sucked into a black hole? Granted I was sick for about 2.5 weeks of the month, but it still feels like it passed by in the blink of an eye. Writing wise I finished another draft of Project Viking (yay!), & started plotting a new story while others are reading Viking. • Сегодня мне уже 21 • 💜 Я чувствую, как я взрослею Чувствую, как мои мысли меняются, а вместе с ними и я сама Как меняется мое окружение, взгляды и суждения на тот или иной счет Я чувствую слишком много того, что каждый день случается в моей жизни Всё ещё только начинается и сколько невероятных моментов и событий меня ждет на моем пути, которые сто тысяч раз повлияют на меня и на мою траекторию жизни. и это действительно так За свои 21 год, я узнала 💫: • Что, в незнакомце можно обрести друга на всю жизнь • Что рискнувший никогда не проигрывает и что тот, кто не рискует, проигрывает всегда • Что проиграть - это нормально, а страдать или нет - наш собственный выбор Но больше, я благодарна таким моментам, которые привели меня к следующим мыслям и убеждениям, с которыми я иду по жизни дальше 📌: Чувствовать всё, что чувствуется. Не отождествлять места с людьми. Оценивать весь мир, пока весь мир учит безоценочному. Продолжать быть влюбленной в себя абсурдно сильно, каким бы зазорным это не казалось тем, кто пока не может также. Выливать на себя тонны любимого парфюма, не закрывать лицо руками, заливаясь смехом, отвечать на сообщения вовремя, кусать ногти и губы, и если хочется напевать себе под нос в людных местах Жить на разрыв, замечать оттенки, ловить полутона, оставаться такой же расточительно щедрой, никогда не подстраиваться - только продолжать задавать планку, даже если кому-то сложно, не заставлять себя быть удобной и маленькой.
