But first, take a journey with me. 👇🏼 😅When I was in labor with my first baby, I didn’t realize that I was actually in labor for HOURS. I had been cleaning and “nesting” ALL day, so when my back was constantly aching, I thought that I had just overdone it while mopping that day. ✨But actually, I was having “back labor”, a term that was completely foreign to me until my doula arrived. Essentially, my contractions were in my back instead of in the front, for about 16 hours, up until I was in active labor. 👏🏼So…. I decided that more mamas should be aware of consistent back pain being a probable sign of labor. Here are the 5 signs to watch for 👇🏼👇🏼 1.) Baby “dropping” 2.) Persistant lower back pain 3.) Diarrhea 4.) Loss of mucus plug 5.) Sudden burst of energy (nesting) & While you’re here… are you interested in a WATER BIRTH?? 👇🏼 ✅ DM ME “WATER” for my FREE guide on a healthy pregnancy journey & planning your water birth! 💙 … #waterbirth #water #waterbirthdelivery #homebirth #signs #signsoflabor #labor #laboranddelivery #healthcoach #childbirth #childbirtheducation #motherhood #mothers #pregnant #pregnanttiktok #fyp #fy #momlife #momsoftiktok #health #pregnancyjourney #naturalbirth

Regular Contractions: As the big moment approaches, you may start feeling contractions that, unlike Braxton Hicks contractions, become regular and more intense. They usually occur at regular intervals, starting every 5 to 20 minutes. Cervical Dilation and Effacement: During impending labor, the cervix begins to dilate (open) and thin out (efface). This is a clear sign that your body is getting ready for childbirth. Your doctor or midwife can check this during a vaginal examination. Loss of the Mucus Plug: You may notice the release of a mucus plug that covers the cervix. It can be clear or tinged with blood and is a sign that things are progressing. Rupture of the Amniotic Sac: In some cases, the amniotic sac ruptures, releasing amniotic fluid. This is often referred to as "water breaking." Pelvic Pressure Sensation: As the baby settles into the pelvis, you may feel a sensation of pressure in the lower abdomen. It's like the baby is getting ready for the big arrival. Lower Back Pain: As the baby moves downward, you may experience lower back pain due to the pressure exerted on the lower back. Diarrhea: Some women experience diarrhea before labor due to hormonal and muscular changes in the body. Remember, every woman is unique and may experience these signs in different ways. . . . #signsoflabor #labor

For first-time mothers, this may come as a surprise, as the early stages of labor can often involve manageable discomfort that allows for conversation and distraction. But as the hours pass and contractions intensify, communication becomes increasingly difficult until it's nearly impossible.⁣ #trythismom #labor #signsoflabor #contractions #firsttimemommy #firsttimemom #pregnancy

Use a stopwatch, smartphone app, or simply watch a clock to track the duration of each contraction and the time between them. Note the beginning and end of each contraction, as well as how long it lasts. This will help you determine if the contractions are becoming more regular and closer together, a sign of true labor.⁣ #trythismom #labor #contractions #signsoflabor #truelabor #laboranddelivery

The water breaking is often not the first sign of labor, but even if it is you don't have to rush to the hospital as soon as it breaks. Although the risk of infection increases over time once the water has broken, the best way to prevent this is by reducing the number of vaginal exams you have after it breaks. I remember being told while training as a doula, "your vagina is not a straw". It does not suck bacteria in, bacteria gets pushed in by things that are inserted into the vagina and then pushed past the cervix. You can labor at home just as you would if your water hadn't broken, until contractions are 4-5 minutes apart. If contractions don't begin with 24 hours then techniques can be used to make sure baby is in a good position or you can use other natural induction methods to encourage contractions to start.

You may have one, none, or all five of these signs of labour. They can indicate that your labour might be starting soon...but it might not! Any or all of these signs can occur, particularly in the later stages of pregnancy, that doesn't lead to labour starting soon after. If your labour does start, this is called the latent phase of labour, also known as "early labour". This stage could go on for hours, or even days. Try to get lots of rest, relax, hydrate, and build up your energy reserves- you are preparing for the labour marathon after all. References: The Royal Women's Hospital (2023) Stages of labour. terms i don't believe in ⤴ prodromal labor (aka false labor) is a contraction pattern that comes & goes over days or weeks. your contractions may intensify & become closer together just as "real" labor would, & then quickly diminish & fade away. this can be really defeating for mothers, especially when they arrive to the hospital thinking that it's go time, only to be sent back home shortly after. but i believe there is no such thing as false labor. no such things as fake contractions. all sensations are purposeful & a part of the birth process. your body knows exactly what it's supposed to do to prepare you & baby 🖤 #birth #labor #prodromallabor #falselabor #reallabor #signsoflabor #laborprep #birthprep #birthpreparation #yourbodyknowsbest #trustyourbody #trustyourbaby #birthdoula #birthworker #birthadvocate #birthsupport #birthteam #youaresupported

Nobody really talks about what happens when your waters break, we see all these dramatic gushes on TV and some of us are anxious of the possible embarrassment. Well…the fact is only 5% of women actually experience their waters breaking before any other signs of labour…and even then for most women , it’s more of a trickle than a gush. Imagine when you sneeze and you think “ did I just pee a bit” well it can feel a bit like that. If you suspect your waters have broken, just give the birthing centre a quick call. #watersbroke #watersbreaking #havingababy #signsoflabor #signsoflabour #labourinpregnancy #pregnancy #pregnancylife #barnsleybirthingcentre #babycomingsoon #40weekspregnant #havingababy #birthing #watersbroken

Transition is part of the active stage of labor when the woman’s cervix is dilated between 8cm and 10cm. Contractions are lasting for 90 seconds and are coming every 2 minutes. Contractions are at their strongest and will feel like they lead one into another or may even have double peaks, only leaving a gap long enough for the woman to catch her breath or take a sip of water. The mother may begin to feel the urge to push and have a bulging sensation in her bottom. Tune in tomorrow to learn about two distinct physiological changes that occur during transition! Recognizing the Early Signs of Labor: A Guide for Expectant Mothers Expectant mothers and their families often eagerly anticipate the arrival of their new baby. Understanding the early signs of labor and recognizing when labor is imminent can help prepare you for the journey ahead. This article aims to demystify the process of labor by outlining the key indicators that suggest labor is on the horizon. Early Signs of Labor Labor marks the body's natural process of preparing to give birth, and it can begin with subtle signs that may start days or even weeks before active labor kicks in. Recognizing these early signs is crucial for expecting mothers to prepare themselves mentally, physically, and emotionally for the birth experience. • Nesting Instinct: Many women experience a burst of energy and the urge to clean, organize, and get their home ready for the baby. This "nesting" instinct can be a psychological sign that your body is gearing up for labor. • Lightening: As the baby drops lower into the pelvis, a process known as lightening, you might notice it's easier to breathe since there's less pressure on your diaphragm. However, this can also increase pelvic discomfort and the frequency of urination due to the baby's position. • Cervical Changes: The cervix undergoes significant changes in preparation for birth, including softening, thinning (effacement), and dilating (opening). These changes can begin weeks before labor starts and are often monitored by your healthcare provider during prenatal visits. • Increased Back Pain and Cramps: Some women experience a noticeable increase in lower back pain and cramping as labor approaches. These sensations can resemble menstrual cramps and might become more pronounced as labor nears. • Loose Joints: The body produces the hormone relaxin, which loosens the ligaments in your pelvis to prepare for birth. This can lead to a feeling of your joints being looser than usual... What does the mucus plug/bloody show look like? It resembles the thick stretchy sticky parts of the egg whites. It can look just as pictured. You may see it slowly coming out for weeks or you may see a whole chuck come out all at once or you may not see it till well into active/transitional labor or birth even. You may see it bloody, white or brown. It also resembles your cervical mucus during ovulation. The bloody show will obviously be bloody like when your starting your period first pink in color and then later a darker red color and it can be tangled with little to lots of mucus. #bloodyshow #mucusplug #earlylabor #signsoflabor #doula #doulalatina #LatinaDoula #Atlanta Doula #doulasofatlanta #labor #amor

. ⚡️ TENS for pain relief in Labour ⚡️ • What is a TENS machine? • Transcutaneous electrical nerve stimulation (TENS) is a method of pain relief involving the use of a mild electrical current. A TENS machine is a small, battery-operated device that has leads connected to sticky pads called electrodes. • How does a TENS machine work? • You attach the pads directly to your skin. When the machine is switched on, small electrical impulses are delivered which you feel as a tingling sensation. The electrical impulses can reduce the pain signals going to the spinal cord and brain, which may help relieve pain and relax muscles. They may also stimulate the production of endorphins, which are the body’s natural painkillers. • Does a TENS machine work? • There’s not enough good-quality scientific evidence to say for sure whether TENS is a reliable method of pain relief. More research is needed and clinical trials are ongoing. TENS has not been shown to be effective during the active phase of labour, when contractions get longer, stronger and more frequent. It’s probably most effective during the early stages, when you may have lower back pain. TENS may also be useful while you’re at home in the early stages of labour or if you plan to give birth at home. If you’re interested in TENS, learn how to use it in the later months of your pregnancy. Ask your midwife/doula to show you how it works. • Are there any side effects? • There are no known side effects for either you or the baby. • Where can I get a TENS machine? • Some hospitals have TENS machines. If not, you can hire your own machine. In Lincolnshire birth pool hire comes with a TENS machine also for a small fee, speak to your midwife. Or you can buy them from many retailers online - a good tip, make sure you get it out the packaging and know how it works / put batteries in it prior to needing it in labour! • Did you use a TENS? Did it help? ⬇️ #tens #tensmachine #painmanagement #labourandbirth #earlylabour #birthpreferences #birthplan #painreliefoptions #birthsupport #birthpartner #birthing #givingbirth #inlabour #birthdoula #doula #birthfacts #informedbirth #thirdtrimester #signsoflabor #babyontheway

🌟🍂 Understanding the Mucous Plug: A Sign Labor is Near 🍂🌟 Hello, amazing soon-to-be moms! 🤰 Today, let's demystify something you might have heard about but may not fully understand: the mucous plug, or as it's often called, the mucous show. 🌿✨ So, what is the mucous plug? It's a clump of cervical mucus that has been sealing off your cervix during pregnancy to protect your baby from infections. As your body gets ready for labor, this plug loosens and passes out. It can be clear, pink, slightly bloody, or have streaks of blood. 🍁 Seeing the mucous show is an exciting sign! It means your body is prepping for the big day - labor might be just around the corner. 🚪👶 But remember, it doesn’t always mean labor will start immediately. It could be a few hours, days, or even a week before labor actually begins. ⏳ If you experience the mucous show, take it as a reminder that your body is doing exactly what it needs to get ready for labor. It's a good time to review your birth plan, ensure your hospital bag is packed, and maybe get some extra rest. 💼🛌 Remember, every pregnancy journey is unique. If you're unsure about anything or have any concerns, always reach out to your healthcare provider for advice. They're there to support you every step of the way! 🌟👩‍⚕️ Share this info with an expecting friend or leave a comment if you've experienced this and have tips or stories to share! Let's support each other in this beautiful and exciting journey to motherhood. 🤗💕 #MucousPlug #SignsOfLabor #PregnancyJourney #ExpectingMoms #LaborPreparation #MotherhoodUnplugged #PregnancyTips #MomLife #GettingReadyForBaby #PregnancySupport 🤰🍂✨

When the early signs of labor come, it's important to stay calm and prepared. Here are a few things you can do: 1️⃣ Rest and relax: Labor can be physically and emotionally demanding, so it's important to conserve your energy. Take this time to rest and find relaxation techniques that work for you. 2️⃣ Stay mobile: Moving around during labor can help with the progression of labor and provide relief from discomfort. Try walking, swaying, or using a birthing ball to stay active. 3️⃣ Reach out for support: Lean on your partner, family, or doula for emotional and physical support during this time. Having someone by your side can provide comfort and reassurance. 4️⃣ Trust your instincts: Remember that your body knows how to give birth. Trust in your instincts and listen to what feels right for you. Each labor experience is unique, and you have the strength within you to navigate it. The duration of early signs of labor can vary from woman to woman. It's common for these early signs, such as mild contractions or discomfort, to last for several hours or even a few days. However, it's important to note that every labor experience is different. If you have any concerns or if the signs persist or intensify, don't hesitate to contact your healthcare provider for guidance. They will be able to provide personalized advice based on your specific situation. Before labor starts, your body might give you signs that labor is approaching. You never know where you'll be when this happens, so it's important to know the signs of labor. These include: 💩 Loose bowels 🤧 Malaise, like the feeling of a cold coming on 😬 Irritability 💥 Increased Braxton Hicks contractions ⚡️ Backache 🩸 Bloody show ❌ Loss of mucus plug While these signs may happen right before labor starts, they’re actually not an indication of imminent labor. In other words, you may experience these signs days or weeks before you go into labor. Therefore, it’s not necessary to call your midwife about these events. 📸: @mintandcocoaphoto #midwiferycare #prenatalcare #miamibirthcenter #miamifamily #signsoflabor #miamikids

... Here are some signs to look out for: 👇👇 1.) Lightening: Your baby might drop lower in your pelvis as the due date approaches, making it easier to breathe but increasing pressure down below. 2.) Bloody Show: A pinkish or bloody discharge can be a sign that your cervix is preparing for labor. 3.) Contractions: Braxton Hicks contractions can become more frequent and intense as your body gears up for the big day. 4.) Nesting Instinct: That sudden urge to organize and clean? It might be your body's way of saying, "Get ready!" 5.) Water Breaking: If your amniotic sac ruptures, it's go time! Time to call your healthcare provider. 6.) Cervical Changes: Your healthcare provider can monitor changes in your cervix that indicate labor is on the horizon. Remember, these signs can vary, and every pregnancy is unique. If you're unsure or have questions, our expert team is here to guide you every step of the way. . . . . . . . . . . . #malaicake #SignsOfLabor #MaternalHealthcare #ReadyToMeetBaby #PregnancyJourney #YouveGotThis #malaica #lasttrimester #HealthyStart #pregnancy #MotherhoodSupport #pregnancylife #healthypregnancy #CallOnMalaica #pregnancywellness #BabyOnBoard

You may have some or all of these signs of labor starting. Some are signs that labor is imminent or that it could be days or weeks away! Sometimes I recommend clients keep a journal or write symptoms they have had in their phone to help them remember. “How can I tell if my body is getting ready for labour?!” - Probably one of the questions I get asked most! I wish I could give you a clear cut answer but… I can’t (sorry!) Those final weeks of waiting can feel so tough. I know first hand how hard it is to dig deep and trust my body and my baby. If this is you right now, hang in there 💫 you are the closest you have ever been. The truth is, there is no single reliable way of knowing when labour will begin. But, there are some common signs that your body just MIGHT be gearing up to birth your baby. That being said, the experience of labour is unique for everyone. So, even as I write this I want to urge you to avoid obsessing over “due” dates and every tiny twinge. Try to embrace this time of transition before you meet your baby and remember that these signs are merely a natural part of the process and NOT a countdown timer. A few things you may notice as the big day draws near: ✨ You feel pressure in your pelvis ✨ You have an increase in watery vaginal discharge ✨ You lose your mucous plug ✨ You feel a strong urge to nest ✨ You’re craving rest Tap through to learn more! I’d love to know: what was the first sign that made you think that labour could be near? I’ll go first: At 40 weeks, I felt like my pelvis could simply not feel ANY heavier and the night before I laboured I couldn’t stop crying 🤭 Meet me in the comments! 👇

A question commonly asked by pregnant moms is, "When will I know to go to the hospital to have my baby?" If you are having contractions that won't subside with position changes and get more intense, you may be in labor. If your water breaks, whether it's a gush or trickle, go into the hospital. Some women are unsure if their water broke or if they are peeing on themselves. If you keep changing a panty liner or have a trickle that won't stop, go into the hospital. If at any time you feel uneasy about your baby's movements, go somewhere quiet and do kick counts. If the movements are not adequate for your gestational age or you feel unsure, go into the hospital. If you ever feel unsure or uneasy in pregnancy, call your doctors office. No concern is too little to be addressed. 🤰🏽 Pregnant moms check in. Contractions are not felt through the abdomen as most women expect but instead wrap around the lower back. A nagging back pain could very much be a sign of early labor. So excited to be getting my calendar ready with new dates for 2023 and 2024. This will be announced later this week so stay tuned. Little bit about me : My name is Emmelena, owner of Racine Holistic. I am based in Sligo in the west of Ireland. I offer Birth doula support, GentleBirth workshops , Reiki healing sessions and Angel healing on Wednesday from @thenaturaltherapiescentre I am a GentleBirth mother myself, I trained to be an instructor in 2018 but I have been hypnobirthing since 2013. I absolutely adore all elements of the GentleBirth workshop, there is so much wisdom in the content and it's not just for first time parents. In fact often after having a first baby many parents realise they needed more. I was one of those parents too. I did not attend any class to prepare for my first birth and it was incredibly intense, at times overwhelming experience following an induction. I was lucky to have the option of an epidural and from that moment it was a game changer. It's important to note second labours can happen much faster so you may not have time for an epidural, better to have more tools in the toolkit to build resilience. GentleBirth is not fixated on one type of birth. Everything is on the table from all natural techniques to pain relief. This is preparation for a positive birth as defined by you. There is an extensive toolkit included for pregnancy, labour and the fourth trimester. The benefits of attending a workshop is that it is so immersive and is often just what the birth partner needs. Sometimes there is a lack of understanding of why a workshop is needed, but attending a hospital hypnobirthing class is NOT the same. In the GentleBirth workshop we show you how to navigate the hospital system, to advocate for your self with evidence based information and facts. This is not a luxury purchase it is necessary to educate ourselves and prepare for a life changing event. Find out more in a FREE discovery call with me. Reach out to me on my DMs and mention this post for a 20% discount on the workshop price DM @racineholistic_emmelenacullen Call 0892128829 Emmelena x

I recently talked to a family about the mucus plug, so here's another round up about it: The cervix is like the hallway out and into the uterus. It generally stays shut before and during most healthy pregnancies. We even form a mucus plug so our babies can stay safe. You might start to lose your mucus plug before you go into labor, BUT many folks don’t see their plug if at all until well into labor. It may come out in bits and pieces at different times or all at once, especially when you are well into labor. Head over to my blog to read my latest post about it: "What was THAT?! All About the Music Plug." ✨ Or DM for the link! . . . #mucusplug #signsoflabor #childbirtheducation #childbirthmentor #onlinebirthclasses #momtobe #empoweredbirth #positivebirth #pregnancy

mommas often look for ALL the signs that labor will start soon. it’s truly so precious, innocent & beautiful that we are so excited to meet another piece of our heart!! BUT here’s the deal, these signs/symptoms COULD be indicators that labor is right around the corner, BUT it could also mean labor is still days/weeks away. for example - i start nesting around 25 weeks 😂 i have lost my mucus plug anywhere from 2-10 days before labor begins. i have only had loose stools leading up to 3 out of 5 of my births. my waters ALWAYS release when my baby’s head is emerging. that being said, some women experience all these signs and go into labor within minutes/hours. so.. here’s the takeaway today - it’s fun to look for signs that our baby is almost here, but don’t get hung up on any of these things! let us continue to trust God’s plan, our body and our baby to come in perfect timing! with love always 🫶🏼 #freebirth #wildpregnancy #naturalbirth #homebirth #signsoflabor #laborsigns #waterbirth #undisturbedbirth #undisturbedpregnancy #pregnancy #newborn #labor #laboranddelivery #godsplan #pregnancysupport #birthkeeper #birth

✨40 weeks! You made it✨ At this check up, you’ll continue the routine checks performed at every appointment: •checking weight •measuring blood pressure •obtaining a urine sample (provider dependent) •listening to fetal heart tones •measuring fundal height ▫️signs and symptoms of labor: these include contractions, bloody show, your water breaking (or leaking), pain in your abdomen or back. ▫️depending on your provider and where you deliver, there are certain policies for setting up an induction. If you deliver in a hospital, they usually only let you get to 41 weeks or 42 weeks gestation before setting up a medical induction. ▫️a nonstress test and ultrasound may be order by your provider just to make sure baby, placenta and amniotic fluid levels all look okay. #40weeks #40weekspregnant #prenatalappointment #obgyn #pregnant #pregnancy #signsoflabor #symptomsoflabor #laborprep #induction #medicalinduction #nst #nonstresstest #ultrasound

At this check up, you’ll continue the routine checks performed at every appointment: •checking weight •measuring blood pressure •obtaining a urine sample (provider dependent) •listening to fetal heart tones •measuring fundal height 🔸Signs & symptoms of labor: there are many signs/ symptoms of labor. Some of the more common include: strong, regular contractions, pain in belly and lower back, water breaking, bloody show. ➡️more to come on signs & symptoms of labor. 🔸 Ideally, a baby is positioned so that the head is delivered first during a vaginal birth. Some babies present feet or butt down, also known as breech. If your baby presents in a breech position after 37 weeks of pregnancy, your birthing plan will likely change. This is because a breech baby usually does not turn on their own after this point. Your healthcare provider will discuss delivery options with you. ➡️more to come on breech presentation and delivery. #37weeks #37weekspregnant #3rdtrimester #prenatalappointment #firsttimemom #pregnant #pregnancy #breechbaby #breech #breechbirth #laborsymptoms #signsoflabor
