I’ve had a canny day today. As I’ve been ill I’ve reduced my training a little bit this week. So today, after a steady parkrun I took myself to the @cullercoatscollective makers market. Got myself some @witchywomanwax wax melts (thanks em!) then had a lovely walk for some food at @rplace and now I’m on the ferry back to the south side of the river. A Shields Ferry skipper who has delighted customers with his uncanny resemblance to Sting for more than three decades is set to retire. Chris McGuinness is renowned for being the spitting double of the Wallsend born singer. The 63-year-old got to meet the musician when he turned up at the Shields Ferry during a visit in 2010. Chris, from South Shields, has worked on the on the cross-Tyne ferry service since 1991. He will bid farewell to his beloved job on June 1, after 33 years. Easter Sunday equalled a good old-fashioned day trip - and it included a ferry journey so that made it even better. We bought a day saver travel ticket that allows travel on buses, metro and ferry so we hopped on the @shieldsferry which is always a treat. Took the metro to Tynemouth before walking, via Cullercoats, to Whitley Bay. Used our pass on the metro back to Newcastle and headed across the river to catch the exhibitions @balticgateshead before catching the bus back to Heworth. Shields Ferry @shieldsferry Today we finally crossed the River Tyne on the Shields Ferry with the wildlings. We both have fond memories of taking this trip as children and couldn’t wait to make the voyage with the boys. 🌊 The Shields Ferry takes you from North Shields to South Shields (and/or visa versa). We started at the North Shields Ferry Terminal. Here, the Ferry arrives every half an hour at 00 and 30 past the hour. It starts and ends at different times depending on the day but they have a regularly updated timetable on the nexus website. We parked just outside the terminal in a car park. It was 60p an hour to park here but cash only. ⛴️ It’s £3.70 for an adult ferry day ticket. Children under 11 are free (3 children free for every adult purchasing a ticket). Today there were people on the ferry giving out sunglasses, children’s activity sheets and badges but were not sure how regularly this happens. We sat at the top and the boys loved spotting other boats and watching the terminal gradually get further and further away. ⚓️ We disembarked at the South Shields landing and made the very short walk up to @theword_uk to check out their latest exhibition which incidentally is all about water and the coast. We then grabbed a quick lunch and headed back for our return trip (The Ferry on the south side comes at 15 and 45 minutes past every hour) 🐟 We then spent the rest of our day playing on the beach at the fish quay and exploring the fish markets. There is also a new ice cream kiosk just by the beach called Di Mascios much to the boys delight! A super fun and very budget friendly day out. AD Looking for a fun family day out in Tyneside? Well what about a day out with @shieldsferry we had the best day out with them this week! We live in North Tyneside so boarded at North Shields for a fun-filled day out in South Shields. An adult return cost £3.70 and children aged 11 and under travel for free with a fare paying adult. The ferry crossing was a highlight of the day out for the children. We travelled aboard Pride of the Tyne which is celebrating its 30th birthday. The kids love sitting on the top deck and watching the views while we cross the Tyne. Journeys only take 7 minutes and the service runs every half an hour. Once in South Shields we headed down to the seafront and visited Marine park. The children played in the park and we rode the little train (£1.50pp) before heading to @oceanbeachpleasurepark where the children enjoyed going on the rides. We finished the day with an ice cream before getting the ferry back to North Shields.
