As the rain keeps coming... I am painting from indoors, looking out. This was painted at the ended on the day of experimenting with monoprints and thought I would have a little play. Watching Each year they choose this box and, on these very chilly days, it must be very challenging. Here the parents haven't quite synchronised their feeds and have to do a shimmy at the door! I have had to dip out of here for a few days as I have had a hugely frustrating flare up of arthritis again and this time it has really floored me. I am not the most patient person and I hate losing days like this, but yesterday I read the latest post by Josie George @porridgebrain and it made such a difference. She suffers debilitating bouts of chronic pain, and tells herself gently, it is "just passing through". Reading these words and recognising that it will pass has helped me through a very sticky few days. This path, lined with red woods and surrounded by birds song will soon be lined with foxglove, their velvety leaves starting to appear. Sunlight beams through the canopy to land like a spotlight on the woodland floor. Fern unfurling, almost ready to burst beside pine cones- perfect spiky domes that giants have thrown to the floor. Mossy trunks of trees stride through this path, their branches waving fresh new greenery to the sky. Bluebells and stitchwort sway as a robin, a wren and a blackbird trill. The first blossom Nestled again against the gorse, I caught a glimpse of the first blossom and couldn't resist drawing it. A crow caws loudly to announce the return of the chiffchaff as a woodpecker gently drums- a gentle melody that will become more insistent as spring settles. A changing palette I love the muted colours of winter, but spring is creeping in and gauzy fresh greens are flushing the bare branches. 3 little ones No drawing again today as there have been buckets of more bloomin' rain, but this was on Friday when at least the air was dry, even if the ground was not! The first of the trio is in Unison soft pastel, but I took out some Neocolor 2 to play with too, which is what I used in the second two. I think I prefer the pastel, as you can get a stronger contrast, but it is always worth experimenting. Energised and joyfully embracing whats around me in Welsh countryside, making nature connections on what felt like a spring day yesterday. Guided by the wild from within and in an exploratory fashion I headed for the hills, in the hope I would be reminded of what excitement stirs in nature. Seeking seasonal splendour I happened upon one of my favourites ‘larch roses’ the female reproductive part of a larch tree; these will go on to form pine cones in the autumn once pollinated by the wind. No matter the number of years I seek to spot these familiar sightings, I never tire of the excitement and opportunities that nature growth brings. This is a spot I frequent to explore often meaning I feel a greater connection to knowing this place. Secondly it fuels me with excitement that I spotted my first …. of the year! It is like a game that gives me immense satisfaction and I always leave with a greater sense of my wellbeing having been restored. I will never tire of seeking out seasonal moments like these after all they come and go so quickly. Be sure to notice what stirring in nature right now, if you allow for it I assure you it can really fuel your enthusiasm for all life! Day 2 of #the100dayproject Working beyond my sketchbook is always a challenge for me and I am fully aware how daft that may sound! But part of this challenge is to do just that, to stop fretting about potentially wasting paper and just get on with it. Here I took a drawing board and separated it into squares with low tack tape. I then took a big brush and swept it across with some acrylic ink, before I went out, so that I had something to work against. This little box of Unison pastels has been neglected for years and this was their moment. I took no more than ten minutes on each and loved not fussing and dwelling on what I was doing. Yesterday... Today has been another day of heavy rain, with more predicted tomorrow...I have just returned from a jolly trip to @thearttradco in Bungay and the fields all the way there are covered in water. It felt like a foreign land. Heaven knows what it is going to be like after another day's rain. I have decided to take part in the #100daysartproject ( hence my excuse for the trip...) and I decided that my theme is going to be "being brave"! I will be exploring new materials, subjects and working on paper ( not just sketchbooks!) each day to see where it takes me. Following @jo_blaker 's brilliant Scribbled Landscape evening I found it huge fun to let go and just explore. This was my first go with charcoal on a BIG piece of paper and as soon as the rain stops I will go to do more! In the meantime it will be studio bound play.
