In case you’re new here, we wanted to share a little bit about Tenango Rum. 🧡 Tenango celebrates the legacy of founder Sofia Deleon’s great-grandmother who was a distiller in Guatemala in the 1920s. It is 100% single source additive free rum made from Grade A molasses. Tenango is distilled in the traditional Spanish style method on a column still, resulting in rich notes of cocoa, banana, coffee, almond, and tropical fruits, plus butterscotch and caramel from by the second use barrel which makes it the perfect rum for whisey drinkers. Singe source means that all ingredients originate in the same environment. The quality-controlled fermentation, bottling, and aging all take place in Guatemala, meaning that when you drink Tenango, you’re not only enjoying a delicious rum but also one with intentionally chosen, high-quality ingredients without any mystery additives or colorings. When Sofia Deleon was launching Tenango Rum last year, she worked with the local indigenous Kik’che’ community in Guatemalan to form a co-op to weave the vibrant covers that adorn each bottle via foot loom. Her mission was to provide jobs to the local community as well as keep an ancient art alive. Hampden has come a long way in fully realising its place as one of the great rums of the world, considering that it wasn't just slighty over 5 years ago in 2018 that the first distillery-aged Hampden rums had made their world premiere. Since then, the distillery itself has also seen much evolution in terms of the rums its put out - more single mark expressions, more vintages, full Sherry cask ageing, more limited editions. So much has happened, and we're certain there's much more to come. One more big thing that's happened at the iconic Jamaican distillery - the wedding of the Harris family's own Christelle, who's also been a part of the distillery for some time as its marketing director. The Harris family had come to acquire Hampden in 2009, when the distillery was put for sale by the Jamaican government. With already existing businesses in Jamaica for generations, the Harris family had thus decided to expand its footprint into rum-making as well. On June 03, 2023, the wedding of Christelle Harris and Matthew Hann took place, and as part of their wedding celebrations, decided to have a special bottle of Hampden rum made, calling it "New Beginnings". With the help of Ian Burrell, a notable rum ambassador, the couple proceeded to pick out their own one of a kind expression. The expression is a blend of 70% Hampden OWH mark 2014 vintage and 30% Hampden <> H mark 2017 vintage. The OWH mark represents a lighter ester mark (Outram Warmold Hussey, 40-80 gr/HLPA ester count), whilst the <> H mark represents a medium ester mark (Hampden, 900-1000gr/HLPA ester count). - Hampden New Beginnings, 57% ABV Thoughts: This feels incredibly nostalgic - it takes me back a couple of years when Hampden was just taking off and finding its nascent popularity.This takes me back to when I first began to become a Hampden fan - it’s got that signature Jamaican funkiness but rather than being the main card, I find much more balance here where it feels more like the topping on the cake. Cold butter, raisins, soft caramels and some light vanilla ice cream Mouth: Vanilla ice cream with some caramel poured on top and some light bitter oak. Light oily mouthfeel with a short finish Overall: Doesn't make much of a sipper but it's definitely a step above the Standard Eclipse. Would work well in some cocktails with the higher proof. The flavour profile is just too basic, with a fairly short finish. The Distillery that this is from is undisclosed, so the goal of the night was to see if we could figure out where this came from Colour: Gold Age: 13 Years Distillery: Undisclosed Marque: N/A ABV: 46% Distillate Base: Molasses Still: Undisclosed. Most likely Pot & Column Cask Type: Undiscovered Additives: None Nose: Cold butter, raisins, vanilla icing, Cinnamon, nutmeg and some light dried coconut flakes Mouth: Salted caramel, cold butter, vanilla ice cream, and some light baking spices. Medium silky mouthfeel with a medium-long finish Overall: Oh man, what a beautiful rum. Definitely on the basic side but the finish and the mouthfeel really make it. Just a super silky mouthfeel that works really well the flavour profile. Would love to have a full bottle of this. The consensus of the night was that this was sourced from Mount Gay.
