Tokyo International Bar Show 2024 🍸 It was both a great challenge and privilege to have led the project for Rémy Cointreau Japan this year. With almost 15,000 guests over two days, Tokyo International Bar Show is Japan’s largest spirits and cocktail event, and I was determined to make sure we stood out this year with a visually stunning space and the drinks to match. In collaboration with our good friends at @eggworm_japan we created a booth that could embody the core values of Remy Cointreau while simultaneously showing each brand’s unique excellence. Terroir: Creating a booth with the environment and sustainability in mind, our booth drew heavy inspiration from renowned Japanese architect Shigeru Ban, using the same innovative recycled cardboard tubes to build something simple, beautiful and with a clear message of environmental conciousness ♻️ 🌏 People: Using 2 giant LED screens we took the thousands of guests on a visual journey to each brand’s unique terrior and introduced them to the incredible people that make our great spirits, as well as the local bartending heroes that support us so well in Japan. Beyond the virtual we of course had great real-life support from our excellent team of Japanese bartenders as well as special visits from our friends Agung & Laura from @penicillin_bar and Mark from @hiboru.taipei 🙏🏻🥃 Time: In homage to the 300 year anniversary of Rémy Martin, a special mural was slowly and carefully painted by @ohyasayaka_art over the 2 days to celebrate this amazing milestone. The final piece will stay with the RCJ team and be featured at the upcoming 300 year festivities too 🥳🎁 It was also the perfect opportunity to launch the new @thebotanistgin cask rested & aged gins in Japan, with a main stage masterclass and even some cocktails shaken by yours truly 🍸 Lastly, a big thank you to the RCJ team, Eggworm and everyone else involved in making this the success it was! Cold butter, raisins, soft caramels and some light vanilla ice cream Mouth: Vanilla ice cream with some caramel poured on top and some light bitter oak. Light oily mouthfeel with a short finish Overall: Doesn't make much of a sipper but it's definitely a step above the Standard Eclipse. Would work well in some cocktails with the higher proof. The flavour profile is just too basic, with a fairly short finish. 2010 era Mount Gay Extra Old Found this at an independent liquor store about a mile from my house. I’m not sure why I never stopped in but this beauty from 2010-2015 was there for just $41. The character of this Extra Old blend leans a little heavier and has more traditional oak barrel flavores than the current XO expression that leans a bit fruitier. Chocolate notes are stronger in the older blend, too. Then as now, this is issued at 43% ABV. I was lucky to find a 2000s era Extra Old in another local store a few years back, so I now have four generations of XO expressions, though my 2015-2019 era bottle is almost gone. These are all very flavorful Barbadian rums that for me a pretty easy to sip at this ABV level and they’re missing the “over oaked” taste you sometimes get with aged rums. These are great on those nights when I want to taste the rum but don’t want to deal with cask strength ABV. The latest XO expression is commonly seen over $60 which factors as a premium for the well-known Mount Gay brand but which also means that savvy shoppers can find better values by looking at brands such as Doorly’s, Old Brigand, and Real McCoy (all produced by Foursquare on Barbados). Whilst in Barbados, it was worth jumping off the beach for couple of hours to visit @mountgayrum the oldest rum distillery in the world. 🇧🇧🥃 Founded in 1703, it produces white and dark Rum made with no flavouring or artificials but with just 3 ingredients: water, yeast and local molasses. 🍯🍹 Rum matures in casks previously used to age Sherry, Cognac or Madeira ⏳ The aging practice started as a coincidence when those brining barrels back to Europe on their vessels noticed that the liquid improved its flavour and taste after being agitated by the ocean on its way back from the island 🌊⛵️ Really thankful to @marc_jdo for arranging this insightful and extraordinary visit 🙏🏻 #barbados #rum #mountgay #cocktail #drinks #foodandbeverage #distillery
