@rhum_a1710 is a newer distillery in Martinique and one that has decided to go in a different direction - while they're making fresh cane juice rums, they're using Armagnac-style pot stills instead of using a column still as required by AOC regulations so their rums fall outside the Martinique AOC. They're also experimenting with maturation as well. St. Mary’s Row 1973 A Taste of Legacy It gives me great pleasure to welcome this very rare Foursquare rum in my collection. It was released to celebrate the 50th Anniversary of Barbados local newspaper St. Mary Row. ( November 2023 ) this rum was matured for 12 years in ex-bourbon & ex-cherry casks. Only 750 bottles were made at 46% AVB. There are rumours that the National newspaper created a time capsule and hid 2 of these bottles for next generation. The fifth release in the Don Q Double Cask Finish series is the Port Cask Finish. It was released about 1 year ago, at the same time as the fourth release (Zinfandel finish), which we have previously reviewed. The Port Cask version was bottled at 40%, and follows the same aging formula as the previous bottles. That is 5 to 8 years in ex-bourbon, followed by 3 years in ex-port casks. In the glass, it's deep brownish red The nose is mild with hints of caramel, honey and cherry cola. The palate is soft, fruit forward and semi-dry with cherry, sweet apples and mild oak. The finish is short to medium with mild oak, grapes and finally the Port wine flavors make a quick appearance. While not our favorite from this series, this rum is easy drinking, with no burn and not overly dry. It makes a really nice entry point for someone wanting to try a finished rum. @braudquennesson grows their own sugarcane but doesn't yet distill. They use Distillerie du Simon for now, but have plans to build their own distillery in the next few years. They're a new brand and aren't yet imported to the US. They offered several different white rums to taste. Aside from one made from the first harvest of a young single cane variety, their other three white rums were all made from the same base spirit, but proofed down to different strengths. Our host said they also used different methods to proof each one down which results in three different rums. They also had two aged rums from new oak casks for us to try. Today I've got the 2nd selection from the 2023 La Route des Rhums calendar, an unaged rum from Martinique's La Favorite distillery celebrating the 180th anniversary of the distillery in 2022. La Favorite released four different bottles, one from each of that year's harvest months. This month was harvested in June and bottled at 56%. La Favorite is a family owned distillery not far from Fort de France. It might be the last distillery left in that area. Touring the distillery is a real experience, with old equipment that would probably be retired in another distillery still running (including a 1906 steam engine running their cane mill). Many steam pipes have sprung leaks, adding to the atmosphere (literally, it's super hot and humid). The fresh cane aroma and palate really come out here. I had the opportunity to get a La Route des Rhums rhum agricole advent calendar while I was in Martinique, and I'm going to start going through it today! This is a 10+1 YO single cask rum from Guadeloupe's @rhum_montebello , produced during the 2012 harvest, aged for 10 years in ex-bourbon, and then finished for one year in an ex-Puligny-Montrachet wine cask from Francois Carillon and bottled at 45.1%. When I first saw MSB2M I thought of some 1980s games console and not an actual rum. I’m still unable to break the code as such but I’m sure a rum fiend will do so. I’d expect it’s some type of reference to a still, given some rum distilleries have a multitude of various types on site. Say, Diamond distillery, who have collated and saved as many rum stills in the country as possible. These include a Enmore wooden Coffey still and a 18th-century Port Mourant double wooden pot still. Imagine being able to try these old styles, still going strong. Meanwhile, there’s a rum to be explored and I’m hoping for a little bit of dunder funk combined with balance and enjoyment. Bottle info Guyana rum (MDB2M) 12 years old 5 years Tropical and 7 years Continental 57.1% 264 bottles Scotch whisky barrel Expect to pay £93 On the nose: light brown sugar, melon, grapefruit and frequently perfume-like in parts. Orange peel, yellow raisins, praline and honey. The top of a pineapple I suppose i.e. the crown. That tropical greenness and yet still a touch of herbs and foliage. In the mouth: very easy drinking with a nice level of sugar and grapefruit. Plenty of citrus with wet wood, smoked almonds and a biscuit-like in parts. More green pineapple and a buttery caramel. My thoughts This rum possesses a captivating and effortlessly enjoyable drinkable nature. It strikes the good balance with its subtle hint of fermented fruit without becoming overwhelming. A rum that will win over the palates of numerous whisky enthusiasts. Score: 7/10
A Martinique tradition: decollage (or, in Creole, dekolaj). It's the name for the first drink (usually a ti punch) of the day. Our hotel laid out fixings for ti punch every morning as part of the breakfast buffet (no such luck for lunch or dinner, you have to go to the bar).
